Sieges

Product Forcing Pattern Break

New 21 Jun 2024 Asked by aalgot 4 Comments

I believe including both in the same product would have been a mistakeWell then you should have started with non siege battles and then made sieges later.Because the first version of a thing gets considered the default (which it really shouldn’t be in this case science it’s explicitly labeled as not being that by having a sub type but people love to not care about that for some reason)

They’re a default until they’re not. There are many things in Magic history that started one way and then evolved,March of the Machine needed Sieges, so we made Sieges. I get that we more often start with the simpler versions of things, but sometimes product needs force us to break patterns.

Including Non Siege Battles

New 21 Jun 2024 Asked by aalgot 8 Comments

In ONE you should realy have included at least one non siege battle to make the fact that only sieges are defended by opponents and have two sides clear, several people including the YouTuber nikachu (who you shouldn’t check out because he does custom card reviews but is a good example of this) just don’t get it (as proven in any custom card reviews stream where he reviews any of the several non siege battles of different types made by the community)

Normally, we we introduce a new thing we limit how it gets used. For instance, we thought up MDFCs when we first put made TDFCs, but took our time putting it into a product. I believe including both in the same product would have been a mistake.

Duel Scenario Subtype

New 18 May 2024 Asked by crimsonandrose-blog 35 Comments

Is it possible to have battles that notate a specific player? Like a duel scenario? My thoughts were like two cowboys at high noon or samurai paired up.

That isn’t how Sieges work, but a new subtype could work differently.

Decoding Battles and Sieges

New 25 Apr 2024 Asked by charlotte-queen-of-gnomes 24 Comments

Are you able to share what design aspects of the Battles that we’ve seen are intrinsic to Battles and what aspects are intrinsic to Sieges? What does it mean for a card to be a Battle?

It has a defense that can be attacked, and it has abilities.

Introduction of Battle Cards

New 25 Apr 2024 Asked by paladinofthelosthour 37 Comments

Have you designed any battle cards that aren’t sieges?

I have. I’ve been on multiple vision design teams that played around with with them.

Potential of Battle Cards

New 25 Apr 2024 Asked by unknown-destination 32 Comments

What potential design space do future Battles hold? Is there plans to make them something like Sagas in terms of versatility?

Sieges are just one way to do Battles. There are many other ways to use them.

Planeswalkers Design Potential

New 01 Mar 2024 Asked by tel-stories-blog 28 Comments

Are we going to see planeswalkers that only tick down like those from war of the Spark again?

If we do another set with a large number of planeswalkers. Also, Battles (not Sieges) can work similarly to that.

Future Battles Speculation

New 05 Feb 2024 Asked by gix-enjoyer 17 Comments

Hey Mark!
Next time we see battles, would you expect Sieges to make an appearance, or solely an entirely new subtype?

We’ll have to wait and see. : )

Sieges Mechanic

New 03 Feb 2024 Asked by arcanistlupus 29 Comments

310.11b Sieges have the intrinsic ability “When the last defense counter is removed from this permanent, exile it, then you may cast it transformed without paying its mana cost.”

I guess the backside reward is built into Sieges.

Sieges Defined

New 03 Feb 2024 Asked by trifas 34 Comments

And with Battle defined, what makes a particular Battle a Siege?

It goes to your opponent’s side and you attack it. All existing Sieges also transform into something when you deal enough damage to it, but I’m not sure if that is inherently built into Sieges.

Design Space Comparison

New 02 Feb 2024 Asked by cle-guy 38 Comments

Do Battles have the least amount of design space of the card types?

No, that would probably be planeswalkers, followed by land (at least with the restrictions we put on them). Note Sieges are just one way to make Battles.

Mechanic Flavor Requirements

New 27 Dec 2023 Asked by j-waffles 41 Comments

I don’t understand why some mechanics get the “has to connect to the flavor of the card” and others don’t. Sagas all have to represent some kind of story, but cards that scry don’t all have to flavorfully represent something that divines the future. The word “siege” might be the name of that particular battle subtype, but they don’t actually represent a “siege” based on what the word means. A “siege” is literally the absence of combat, it’s preventing a target from getting necessary resources in order to compel a surrender. It seems like you are drastically limiting your own design space by mandating that all cards with the subtype saga flavorfully represent a story, as opposed to just utilizing the mechanics of the card type.

Subtypes have a stronger creative restriction. Equipment and Vehicles, for example, also have a tighter creative rein. As for siege, you’re using the first definition. Sieges can also be applied to other types of conflicts, usually where one side has a more defensive position. Your opponent has the battle and you have to fight through their resources to get to it.

Future Sieges Possibility

New 16 Nov 2023 Asked by sinkingtime 35 Comments

Could we in theory get more Sieges set during the New Phyrexia invasion, on the grounds that maybe we didn't see all of them back in the day?

That’s not off limits to the right set.

Battles versus Sieges

New 04 Oct 2023 Asked by marcantoniosavelli 30 Comments

Do battles need to be double faced cards?

No, but Sieges do, I believe.

Design Evolution Reflection

New 29 Sep 2023 Asked by assemblyofretards 36 Comments

in the past we had "aura weapons", vehicles that weren't vehicles, and sieges that were not battles (Tarkir). is there ever a concern with R&D that innovation will cancel out earlier designs?

With the pool of existing cards (over 25,000), that’s just going to happen to some degree. I like to think of it as stepping stones to get to where we are now.

Battle Mechanic Clarification

New 11 Sep 2023 Asked by niuttuc 52 Comments

You've mentioned twice now that Battles can be removed by the damage colors like planeswalkers or are the most likely candidates. However, damage doesn't get rid of current battles (Sieges), it gives their controller more value by allowing them to cast the other side. This might not hold for future executions of the mechanic, but for now red being able to remove opposing battles isn't really true.

I said there are natural components in the game that can be used to deal with them. With Sieges, creatures (mostly) have to deal combat damage to them. The game has numerous answers to that threat.

Definition of Typal

New 21 Jul 2023 Asked by thunderweb 30 Comments

When something cares about noncreature subtypes like Forests, Vehicles, Sagas, or Sieges, does it still count as "typal"?

That isn’t how we tend to use the term internally.

Battles Subtype Mechanics

New 19 Jul 2023 Asked by applesaucegirlboss 27 Comments

Right now the rules for battles say that with no subtypes, a battle is protected by its controller. If WotC wanted to do a set where battles are defended by opponents similar to Sieges, but AREN'T transforming, would the rules for battles be changed to be closer to Sieges or would a new subtype be created?

We would most likely make a different battle subtype.

Siege Card Mechanics

New 08 Jun 2023 Asked by an-jell0 32 Comments

Are sieges where the battle side gives the caster a downside but the flipped side has an extra strong effect if you can cast it as a payoff something that could be explored in the future? Or are you preferring to keep them pure upside in their current design space?

Downsides aren’t off limits.

Siege Card Names

New 08 Jun 2023 Asked by forestd3w 33 Comments

The only thing I'm disappointed with Sieges is that we got a cycle of cards called siege in Fate Reforged, but they aren't battles and even less sieges. Those names would have been perfect for the battles!

It’s hard to predict the game’s future.
