Rules Vs. Card Ideas

New 12 Mar 2024 Asked by krarkrosewater 49 Comments

Hi mark thanks so much for your blog.It must happen sometimes you work on a mechanic or card that everyone understands how its supposed to work and its clear what that card wants to do but the rules of the game cant technically allow for it to work. Can you share an example of something that seems simple but has never been done because of a rules issue?

The best example would be to look at the acorn cards of Unfinity. While a few we’re kept acorn for Legacy concerns, the vast majority of acorn cards simple don’t work in the rules. Bloomburrow Color Focus

New 09 Mar 2024 Asked by curiooftheheart 50 Comments

Mark I fully expect this to be too far out but it's not like it hurts to ask. Can you comment on if all of Mabel's party members are a species that's going to be one of the color pair focuses in Bloomburrow? Even if you can't like comment on or confirm who is what color.

Being a party member of Mabel’s does not guarantee your creature type is one of the ten two-color archetypes.

Eternal Game Mechanics

Is Far Out (or a more tame version of it) possible in eternal?

It has a real problem with exclusive choices (you pick something, but only one can exist).

Bloomburrow Trivia

New 10 Feb 2024 Asked by elderaktis 44 Comments

The moon is high, the altar is lit, and I invoke the ancient and unholy rite of birthday trivia.I'd like to know some trivia (no matter how small or vague) that we don't already know about Bloomburrow. If that's too far out, then please do Outlaws of Thunder Junction instead.

The lead vision designer for Bloomburrow is Doug Beyer (from the creative team). The lead set design is Ian Duke. I really think everyone hit it out of the ballpark. It’s my personal favorite set of the year. Happy Birthday!

Modern Horizons Design Timing

New 05 Dec 2023 Asked by noahmatthews1399 27 Comments

When a modern horizons set is being designed, how far out from release can the last card be added, say in order to help course correct how the format is being played?

Sets usually are finalized six to nine months before release. We also are very careful about adding tournament-relevant cards too late in the process as we don’t want to undo all our testing.

Sixth Color in Magic

New 16 Nov 2023 Asked by groselhaviking 31 Comments

Hi, Mark! How are holding up?RE: Sixth colour in universe vs universe beyond. Is it because the fun about universe beyond is doing those IPs in a magic way and go so far out of what magic normally does gets in the way of that?

A sixth color, if we did it (and I’m not sure we ever will), would be a major focus. Universes Beyond sets don’t need another major focus. The property *is* the focus.

Magic Con Locations

New 25 Sep 2023 Asked by doctortnt20xx 34 Comments

Hey Mark, if I can ask will there be magic con's in locations like Chicago? Would love to attend one but a lot of the magic cons are too far out for me to travel to.

Magic Con is coming to Chicago in February of 2024.

Feedback on Teases

New 06 Aug 2023 Asked by zanmor 61 Comments

Just wanted to offer a bit of feedback that I enjoy the long term teases. Having an idea of this stuff so far out is exciting, but also lets me better anticipate which sets I'll want to spend on. I also enjoy knowing to expect a story finale type set with ziplining. It really helps set expectations and give a better sense of what is coming in story in broad terms. I hope this sort of thing continues.

How do others feel?

Excitement for Announcements

New 06 Aug 2023 Asked by countertargetspell 19 Comments

Blown away by the announcements today, including everything from the Arena team. LOVED getting to see this much this far out, even knowing it’s nebulous and still shifting the further out it goes. Makes me feel very confident about the future of Magic!! Please pass along my high fives!!

Will do!

Duskmourn Similarity

New 05 Aug 2023 Asked by blaze-1013 34 Comments

I know it's super far out, but just to set expectations, Duskmourn is playing in the space that Betrayal at House on the Hill plays in right?

There’s lots of overlap, yes.

Expectations for Ixalan

New 18 Apr 2023 Asked by righteousforest 49 Comments

I know it's waaaay too far out for any specifics about Lost Caverns of Ixalan, but as a huge Ixalan fan I want to be able to set my expectations appropriately: You've mentioned a couple times now that it wasn't originally envisioned as an Ixalan set, but will it still have a decent amount of stuff that will feel familiar to our first visit to Ixalan? Or should we be expecting a pretty significant departure?

We’re going to see a different aspect of Ixalan, so it’s less like a return, but it is Ixalan, so there should be some recognizable aspects. We can talk more as we get closer to it.

Modal Spells Support

New 13 Apr 2023 Asked by honor-basquiat 55 Comments

I understand that Far Out (from Unfinity) has to be an Acorn but may I request a non-Acorn card (preferably a legendary creature) that supports modal spells and abilities in some other way? Something like "Whenever you choose one or more modes, [insert bonus effect here]."

I’ll see what I can do.

Card Interaction Clarification

New 20 Dec 2022 Asked by heavenlyevan 19 Comments

How does Phone A Friend work with Far Out? Does the person you call have to be the one controlling Far Out?

If you control Far Out and Phone a Friend, you can pick how many modes the phone friend chooses.

Un Rules Interaction

New 12 Dec 2022 Asked by seththemusical 29 Comments

What happens in un rules with Outlaws Merriment and Far Out?

You combine all the effects. For example, for Outlaw’s Merriment, you get a creature token that has the combined power, combined toughness, and all abilities of all three options (if you choose all three).

Acorn Stamp in Unfinity

New 12 Dec 2022 Asked by greatstarlightninja 31 Comments

Hi, i was really sad that far out got an acorn stamp in Unfinity because it cannot work with cards like Outlaws Merriment. Could we get a card that only works for instants and sorceries, i.e the Commands and Charms? After looking at most of them i could not find one that would be problematic with this. Hope it happens one day :)

The issue is we occasional make effects where all the options can’t coexist. It’s not limited to permanents, even if we haven’t made one yet (not that I definitely know we haven’t). The rules want to be forward looking at to not cut out future design space unnecessarily. It’s why acorn exists. There are cool effects that players would enjoy that can’t be made in normal sets for larger issues, even though they’re totally understandable and fun.

Cards vs Rules Evolution

New 05 Nov 2022 Asked by derelictdimir 39 Comments

So, this is a somewhat out-there question, but Magic has “the rules”. Cards must follow and be templated within “the rules”, and you’ve mentioned that some of your pet card designs (ex. Far Out) don’t work because they’re not supported within “the rules”. But as far as I know, it hasn’t always been this way. What prompted the shift from “the cards explain the rules” to “the rules support the cards”? To your knowledge, is this a trait common to most card games (creating an overlying rule structure), or something unique to the complexity of Magic? Does it ever feel like it hinders creativity, or do the benefits far outweigh the costs?(P.S., loving the preview for Brother’s War)

Sanctioned organized play happen.

Potential for Black-Border Clowns

New 14 Oct 2022 Asked by silpheed-tandy 45 Comments

is it possible to get more Clowns in black-border? or is this so far out of the tone of non-Acorn sets that it's highly, highly unlikely?

Un-sets have introduced things that later made it into normal Magic, so who knows?

Far Out Mechanic

New 11 Oct 2022 Asked by spaismanspif 22 Comments

This bullet point under Far Out in the Unfinity release notes article implies you can choose not to apply Far Out when casting confluence-type spells, and therefore choose the same mode more than once:

Some spells have text that allows you to choose the same mode more than once. If you cast such a spell and choose to apply Far Out's effect to it, you won't be able to choose any single mode more than once.

Correct.

Acorn Cards Explanation

New 26 Sep 2022 Asked by j-waffles 35 Comments

Will there be an article or something put out explaining why certain cards are acorn that initially seem like they could be eternal? Far out has already been explained, but there are some others that I’m puzzled by

I’m planning to do a podcast with Jess Dunks talking through the cards that are less clear why they’re acorn.

Acorn Card Criteria

New 22 Sep 2022 Asked by kreetn 78 Comments

What makes Far Out an acorn card and Clandestine Chameleon not?
I’ll just come right out and say it: I’m peeved that Far Out, a card whose design I LOVE isn’t implicitly black bordered and that I’m going to need special permission from my playgroup to use it. I’m a Melvin, and not being able to use it everywhere really rustles my Jimmies.

The normal rules can’t handle what’s known as mutually exclusive modes. It’s when a card has multiple modes, but the outcome are different choices of the state of one item. I’ll use the card Outlaw’s Merriment from Throne of Eldraine as my example:Outlaw’s Merriment\1RWWEnchantmentAt the beginning of your upkeep, choose one at random. Create a red and white creature token with those characteristics.• 3/1 Human Warrior with trample and haste.• 2/1 Human Cleric with lifelink and haste.• ½ Human Rogue with haste and “When this creature enters the battlefield, it deals 1 damage to any target.”There are three modes, but you only get one creature. This forces us to answer the question of what do you do if something is more than one state at once. For example, what happens if you cast Outlaw’s Merriment and chose all three modes? The normal rules can’t handle this. The acorn answer is you combine all the information as best you can. In the case of Outlaw’s Merriment, you would get a 6/4 Human Warrior Cleric Rogue with haste, lifelink, trample, and “When this creature enters the battlefield, it deals 1 damage to any target.”
