Inquiry into OTJ Set Numbers

New 21 Apr 2024 Asked by biquenappeur 40 Comments

Hi Mark, unsure if this has been asked

The Set Numbers in OTJ really have me in a tizzy near the end there.
Usually I would expect WUBRG + alphabetical, but in OTJ this pattern is broken with Bucolic Ranch - Spirebluff Canal, and of course Jace Reawakened clocking in between the non basic and basic lands at 0271.
Was there a particular thought/reason there?

Absorbing the Aftermath set into the main set is the cause of most of the weird collector numbering.

Jace Reawakened's Placement

New 01 Apr 2024 Asked by tybonel13 42 Comments

Why was Jace Reawakened moved to the main set and not The Big Score once the epilogue set was getting reworked?

All decisions about what went into the main set and what was put into the Big Score was left up to the Dartboard of Destiny.

Collector Number Anomaly

New 30 Mar 2024 Asked by unastrenoir 47 Comments

Why is Jace Reawakened collector number 271 ??? He isn't part of the U cards?

Jace Reawakened was originally part of the Outlaws of Thunder Junction Aftermath set. That product was killed pretty late, so much so, that we couldn’t change the collector numbers when we moved Jace into the main set. I think the rest of the cards from Aftermath (at least the ones we kept) are part of the Big Score.

Blood Avatar Tokens

New 13 Mar 2024 Asked by eiddenarhrcoc 24 Comments

Hi Mark! Given its importance in the Strixhaven storyline, why isn't the token created by Awaken the Blood Avatar legendary?

I assume it’s possible for multiple people to do it? I’m not sure.

Land Tokens Mention

To the person asking about land tokens: Awaken the Woods and Staff of Titania both create tokens with the type "Land".

Token Naming Criteria

New 10 Nov 2022 Asked by dolbyzalo 35 Comments

In the past you’ve created cards that make tokens with the same name as actual cards (i.e. Llanowar Elves from Llanowar Mentor). Why do Awaken the Woods and Staff of Titania not make Dryad Arbors?

We tend to do that when we’re purposefully playing flavorfully into the nostalgia of the older card.

Awaken the Woods Correction

New 04 Nov 2022 Asked by blaze-1013 55 Comments

I do think it is important note that Awaken the Woods doesn't make land tokens, it makes creature land tokens. Out side of enabling land synergy they aren't that different from just making a Llanowar Elf token, which is already something you've done.

Fair point.

White's Access to Haste

New 02 Jun 2022 Asked by krinstranger 30 Comments

You said that White doesn't get Haste except with Akroma. But Magic players love technicalities, so I'll point out that the Awaken mechanic granted it in order to get around issues with which lands would have summoning sickness.

Suspend also granted haste. Individual mechanics have some latitude not available to single cards.

Trivia Request for Oros the Avenger

New 26 Jan 2022 Asked by dragonkillrr 36 Comments

Hi Mark can I invoke the Birthday Clause and get some trivia about my favourite dragon, Oros the Avenger? Failing that I’d take some Aesi trivia instead, plane name maybe?

In Invasion, we made a cycle of shard/arc dragons (Rith, the Awakener being the most famous). We had wanted to make the wedge versions, but finding the right set to do so was tricky. When Planar Chaos came around, we decided the what if nature of the set was a perfect opportunity. They were designed a 3MNO 6/6 flying dragons with a 2M trigger when they dealt combat damage. We couldn’t find five new “pick a color” effects we liked, so we just tied the effects to color without making the player choose.Happy Birthday!

Potential Kicker Evergreen

New 04 Nov 2021 Asked by jimharbor 30 Comments

Have you ever thought of making kicker or something similar evergreen as a way to fold all the various kicker set mechanics together? So for example, Dash, Awaken, Surge, Unleash etc would all use this keyword in specific ways instead of being their own keywords.

That would just make sets feel more similar.

Art Form of Tiny Stories

New 05 Oct 2021 Asked by bakabakadesign 63 Comments

No question, just a huge compliment to how y'all have turned the telling of tiny stories to an art form. Mourning Patrol // Morning Apparition, Eccentric Farmer, Ecstatic Awakener // Awoken Demon and Jerren // Ormendahl are my favourites from just this last set.

Happy to hear you’re enjoying our two-part stories. : )

Blue Attacking Creature with Haste

New 15 Jun 2021 Asked by jjustin1379 29 Comments

Do you think blue will ever get an attacking creature with haste? It has gotten suspend awaken and unearth on mono blue cards which grant haste.

We already have haste primary or secondary in three colors, so I’m skeptical.

Kicker Versus Other Abilities

New 15 Mar 2021 Asked by tbjanowski 75 Comments

Buyback, Replicate, Entwine, Fuse, Exploit, Awaken and Escalate are all really just versions of Kicker. Why not just use Kicker so that these abilities could be backward and forward compatable?

1) We value flavor and excitement of individual sets over keyword continuity. There isn’t that many cards, for example, that care about kicker. As I’ve said many times, one of the big drawbacks of kicker is it’s too broad a mechanic. 2) Not having to keyword it as kicker gives us more flexibility on how individual mechanics work. Not every mechanic you named, for instance, is exactly kicker.

Defining Design Terms

New 16 May 2020 Asked by sgt-cookie-2 28 Comments

Do you have an internal design terminology for things that are "technically" colour pie breaks, but only because they're needed for a larger ability to function? For example the White Suspend/Awaken cards that all give haste, which is not something White is technically supposed to do.

We call those bends.

Noyan Dar Colors

New 09 Aug 2019 Asked by kelebriel 38 Comments

A friend and I were wondering: Why is Noyan Dar (from Battle for Zendikar) in WU? Lands are pretty green.

Green is normally the color that focuses the most on lands, but Battle for Zendikar is on Zendikar which has a major focus on lands, so we have to spread the land mechanics across all five colors. Although it’s not referenced by name, Noyan Dar is basically adding Awaken 3 to instants and sorceries and the Awaken mechanic was primarily focused in white and blue. Green, in contrast, was focused on Landfall.

Planeswalker Population

New 19 Mar 2019 Asked by cursedereaper 37 Comments

Hi Mark. You said we shouldn't confuse the focus on Planeswalkers with there being many Planeswalkers. So what would be the numbers of Planeswalkers per plane. Ravnica seam to have three in their millions of people, Kaladesh has 3 so far and Dominaria had about a dozen. If you compare our population (about 7.7 million) how many people would be planeswalkers? 5? 10? 20? Or even just 3? My guess would be about 5 of wich some haven't awaken their spark.

Very few people have a spark (a handful on an entire plane) and not all of them realize it.

Corpse Counter Role

New 15 Aug 2018 Asked by flusterfluff 40 Comments

Does the Corpse Counter from Isareth the Awakener actually do anything?

It’s a visual reminder that when the creature dies it doesn’t go to the graveyard.

Kicker Mechanic Discussion

New 18 Jun 2018 Asked by suigenyukiouji 29 Comments

I'd argue that any card that has an optional additional cost you can choose to pay that then modifies or adds to the functionality of the card is essentially kicker. To me, mechanics like Entwine, Bestow (even though Bestow is an alternate cost instead of an additional), Awaken, Escalate, Strive are all kicker variants. (May I also request the next time we see (Multi)Kicker we get a permanent with an activated ability to "Kick target spell." ?)

My job is to more finely chop up design space to create flavorful new mechanics, not broaden things so everything feels like a rehash.

Phyrexians and Sparks

New 22 Mar 2018 Asked by shadowstar91 120 Comments

"Phyrexians can’t hold a spark I believe." Actually it is just because no Phyrexian has ever held one. They are the blending of metal and flesh in a way that usually involves rotting flesh and undeath but theoretically if a planeswalker were to become corrupted they wouldn't lose their spark. No Phyrexian could ever awaken one though, so they have to turn an existing walker for it to happen. Thankfully they have what's left of the Mirran people to try with. :)

Simplifying Awaken

New 25 Jun 2017 Asked by theothin 29 Comments

Do you think it would have been an improvement to simplify Awaken to always putting three +1/+1 counters on the land rather than a variable number?

In design, the number was locked - first at 2 and then at 3. Development changed it to a number to add an extra knob to balance them.
