Regrets Over Mechanic Keywords

New 02 May 2024 Asked by butttaco7 39 Comments

Are there any keywords or mechanic names that you retroactively wished you'd saved for later? For example, Transmute could have been used for tons of things.

There are plenty of bad mechanics with good names. Obviously, with 20/20 hindsight, we wouldn’t have given them as good a name. So, yes, there are many.

Green Transmute Possibility

If or When: green cards with Transmute in a future set.

If. We don’t like the repetition of tutoring mechanisms.

Modern Horizons is the most likely place for this to appear. Why specifically seven?

Neurok Transmuter and No Types

New 29 Jan 2022 Asked by mrpopogod 38 Comments

As an FYI for your readers concerned about a creature not having a type, the rules don't even require a permanent to have ANY types. They should check out the rulings on Neurok Transmuter to see how you can have a permanent on the battlefield with no types.

Opinion on Non-Typed Permanents

New 27 Nov 2021 Asked by hitek1208 35 Comments

What's your thoughts on permanents without a type?Currently it can be done with a non creature artifact, March of the machines and neurok transmuter to turn an artifact into a non typed blue permanant

Just because you can force it to happen doesn’t mean it’s a good thing to do.

Transmute or Splice Return

New 19 Aug 2021 Asked by jml1218 28 Comments

Hello Mark, when or if is more likely to return to a set; Transmute or Splice onto Instant or Sorcery?

Splice. We’ve really stopped doing tutoring mechanics. It just rested too much repetition of play.

Legendary Creature for Library Interaction

New 02 May 2021 Asked by thejingleking 23 Comments

With regards to a legendary creature to support transfigure and transmute, could we get a legendary creature with a trigger for library searching? (Maybe with a unique Johnny effect so as not to just make tutors more powerful)

Something synergistic with library interaction is the way to go.

Legendary Creature with Specific Supports

Mark, can I ask for a legendary creature with support to transfigure and transmute?

I’m not sure we’re doing a lot more with those mechanics.

Comment on Mutating a God

New 14 Apr 2020 Asked by meradric 45 Comments

For reference for those who are finding the "Mutating a God leaving you with a permanent with no card types" this has been doable since 2004 with Neurok Transmuter and March of the Machines.

Thoughts on Transmute

What are your thoughts on transmute, was it ahead of its time or just too powerful mechanic? Go Dimir! ;)

It led to repetitive gameplay.

Ravnica Mechanics Approach

New 21 Dec 2018 Asked by jhoald 48 Comments

We've now seen all 5 mechanics and none of them are entirely new. A Bloodthirst, Monstrous, and Unleash variant. Keywording the text on cards like doomed traveller and careful consideration (and many other cards for each of them). Ravnica had always been the plane where crazy mechanics were tried out: Cipher, Extort, Detain, Haunt, and Transmute just to name a few. What caused such a safe and familiar approach this time? It makes the set feel more like a core set than a new and exciting one.

Ravnica is more about the innovations of the guilds than of the guild mechanics. A set with five mechanics forces us to keep the mechanics simple.

Transmute Mechanic Return

New 08 Sep 2018 Asked by jakobirobi9-blog 43 Comments

Could Transmute make a comeback in one of the upcoming Ravnica sets?

R&D have soured on Tutoring mechanics as they make games play out too similarly. Individual tutors are fine, but we don’t currently plan to do whole mechanics.

Card Type Anomaly

New 23 Jun 2018 Asked by parkerlewis31884 38 Comments

"The rules have to know how a card works and a card without a card type would have unknowns." FYI, if you have March of Machines and Neurok Transmuter into play, and activate NT's second ability on a third card that is "normally" a non-creature artifact, layers will make you end up with a blue card with no card type :)

Transmute Mechanic Idea

Could we see something like Transmute, but with looking at the top X cards of your library instead of a search?

Possibly.

Transmute Mechanic Explanation

New 22 Feb 2018 Asked by calamitouscube 27 Comments

Q #37 explicitly asks what would help you Draw specific cards. Of all the options included, Transmute is the only one that does not and more importantly, cannot, ever execute the action of Drawing. Cycling and Investigate both Draw, and Scry helps you Draw. Out of the remaining two, only Kicker technically has the ability to Draw cards (as we've seen on many cards before) whereas Transmute never can. Why was it worded "Draw specific cards" when apparently you meant "have specific cards"?

The question was saying if you’re hoping to draw a specific card, which mechanics help you have a better chance to draw it. Transmute is a Tutoring mechanic. It is very good at drawing you the specific card you need.

Tutoring Mechanics Stance

New 09 Oct 2017 Asked by phyrexiathings 38 Comments

Why has wizards straight up said "tutoring mechanics are a no go". Transmute and transfigure are very fun and skill intensive, while also allowing players to have "toolboxes" in their deck. I also doubt it's a balance issue because they only get 1 cmc worth of things.

Tutoring lessens variance and leads to repetition of gameplay. The occasional card is okay, but a tutoring mechanic is too much.

Typeless Permanents Issue

New 14 Apr 2017 Asked by iamregisteredon 33 Comments

the gods not being creatures isn't as big a problem as you might think, the rules have had to support permanents with no types since March of the Machines + Neurok Transmuter interactions.

The rules handling it and the players handling it are not the same thing. We don’t want permanents in play without a card type.

Fixing Until Broken

Tinker (from Urza’s Legacy) was a “fixed” Transmute Artifact (from Antiquities).

Blue Permanents Interaction

New 17 Dec 2016 Asked by tsuyoshikentsu 47 Comments

"Blue doesn’t destroy permanents in the sense that it makes them permanently go away. It can used the word 'destroy' as a mechanical means to aid in transformation." So Blue could Ghost Quarter lands? It could get Gild, but for artifacts? A Blue Chaos Warp would be a bend, not a break? Blue's mechanical weakness is that it's supposed to be reactive--that it has trouble permanently dealing with things in play. How far are you going to stretch the "transmute" excuse to let it do whatever it wants?

Blue can steal permanents.Blue can tap and lock down permanents.Blue can bounce permanents.Blue can and has since the beginning of the game been able to interact with permanents. What it can’t do is destroy them (once again making them permanently go away).I’m not changing anything. I’m explaining how we’ve done Blue for the last 23 years.
