Old Layout Nostalgia

New 04 Jan 2020 Asked by magicpackcrack-blog 29 Comments

Mark, I've been playing and collecting since I was 9 with Antiquities. I was wondering if there will ever be a throwback set or even a new set with the original layout and borders? I miss brown artifacts like you wouldn't believe lol.

There’s a reason we moved away from the old frames. I’m not saying we’ll never do them in some smaller context, but it’s not something we want to be doing in a large volume.

Retroactive Legendary Status

New 20 Nov 2019 Asked by slayer35000 23 Comments

Hi Mark, there's lots of cards from the ABU/Arabian Nights and Antiquities sets that lore-wise should be legendary by today's standards. Though I know the reason is that the Legendary mechanic was introduced in Legends, so after those sets were released, was there any intention of retroactively making erratas on cards that would have been Legendary if released in a post-Legends set?

No.

Yawgmoth Spelling History

New 11 Oct 2019 Asked by stud-yawgmoth 30 Comments

Was "Yawgmoth" was originally spelled differently and changed to be phonetic?

Not that I know of. Yawgmoth was first mentioned in Antiquities which was really Magic’s first time telling a story in cards.

Enchantment-Themed Block

New 10 Aug 2019 Asked by sylvhem 26 Comments

As an enchantment lover, I would love to see an enchantment-themed block in the future. We had multiple artifact-themed sets with Antiquities, the Mirrodin block and the Scars of Mirrodin block, but no enchantment-themed ones. Do you think it could happen?

Both Urza’s Saga and Theros blocks had an enchantment theme.

Phyrexians Origins

New 10 Aug 2019 Asked by whitewolf550 39 Comments

Hey was my birthday a couple days ago, was wondering if you could Tell my anything about my favourite race in mtg, the Phyrexians?

The Phyrexians first showed up in Antiquities. Because every nonkand card in the set was an artifact or referenced artifacts, all the Phyrexian cards (which were all black) connected mechanically to artifacts and set up the artifact connection the Phyrexians have, flavorfully mixing flesh with metal.Happy Birthday! And thanks for playing for 24 years.

Blogatog Name Origin

New 21 Jul 2019 Asked by felix-mortem 42 Comments

(This may have been already asked) Is Blogatog a reference to Atog from Alpha?

It is a reference to the Atog creature type. The original Atog first appeared in Antiquities, by the way.

I’m not sure what you think that entails.

Artifacts Not To Blame

New 30 Jun 2019 Asked by gophilipbowles 62 Comments

I still find the artifact = problem correlation weak, at least as it relates to their colourlessness. Aetherworks Marvel used a mechanic that tied it to a colour combination; it would still have been problematic if it were a UG coloured artifact, and it became a problem with the printing of Rogue Refiner, a nonartifact. Smuggler's Copter was such an obvious error every commentator it raised it as a concern on sight. Artifacts are a scapegoat for Kaladesh's flawed design, not the cause.

Artifacts aren’t to blame for Kaladesh. Or Scars of Mirrodin. Or Mirrodin. Or Antiquities. It’s the individual design of each of those sets and not the mechanical connection that binds them all together. And it’s a complete coincidence that the one set with an artifact theme that was woven into colors (Shards of Alara) is the only one not to break. : )

Favorite Non-Designed Set

I’ve had a hand in almost every set since I got here. My favorite Magic set before joining Wizards was Antiquities.

Artifacts Matter Sets

Sets with an artifact matter theme of any size: (off the top of my head)- Antiquities- Mirrodin block- Shards of Alara block- Scars of Mirrodin block- Magic Origins- Kaladesh block

Legacy Legal Cards

New 16 Feb 2019 Asked by tbjanowski 39 Comments

City in a bottle, golgothian sylix and Apocalypse Chime are still legal in legacy and vintage, so cards can care about what expansion they are from are just not silver boarder?

The way the cards work in Oracle is they list every single card it affects. It doesn’t look at the expansion symbol. For example, if you have Triskelion from a core set without an Antiquities expansion symbol, it will still die to the Sylix.

What exactly does that mean?

Favorite Expansion

New 17 May 2018 Asked by project-two-five-zero-one 36 Comments

What do you think is the best-designed expansion you didn’t work on? (Excluding Alpha, Beta, etc.)

Antiquities. Remember, I’ve worked on most Magic sets since 1995.

Card Ordering

New 25 Apr 2018 Asked by moonleafgeekreviews 17 Comments

Quote about putting cards on bottom: "It isn’t a change. It has to do with how many cards you’re putting on the bottom of your library." Thank you for your answer. To be clear, in Dominaria, effects that look at 5 cards (Board the Weatherlight, Weatherlight, Memorial to Unity, Antiquities War) put cards in random order, for the effect that puts 3 (Adventurous Impulse) player chooses the order. So 5 are considered a lot of cards and put in a random order, while 3 aren't?

I believe the line is between 3 and 4.

Urza Lands Trivia

New 14 Apr 2018 Asked by ezxdz 58 Comments

Mark it's my 26th birthday! May I get some trivia on the Urza lands original designs?

Urza Lands predate me. The one trivia is that every card in Antiquities either is an artifact or mentions artifacts in their rules text… except the lands which produce colorless mana and imply use to cast artifacts. Happy Birthday!

Antiquities Story Development

New 11 Apr 2018 Asked by thejoycannon 44 Comments

I started reading The Brother's War on ebook recently and I am loving it. However, in picking up the book I realized that it was published in 1998, even though the Antiquities set came out four years ago. This got me wondering how the story developed over time, what concrete story elements existed when the set was created, and how much was added by Jeff Grubb in his novelization. Was the story of Antiquities told in places other than the cards, like magazines or booklets now lost to time?

Antiquities mostly hinted at the. Brother’s War rather than told the whole story. Pieces were told in various places, but Jeff Grubb’s novel is the first complete telling.

Romance in Magic Lore

Not only is it my birthday, but also: this past week, I just got into a new relationship! Can I get any trivia on romantic love in Magic the Gathering?

The first romantic relationship in a Magic story, I believe, was Ashnod and Tawnos in the Brother’s War (Antiquities). Happy Birthday and Happy New Relationship!

Artifact Blast Repeat?

I know it's a pretty old card (Antiquities), but could red still do something like Artifact Blast, i.e. countering an artifact spell?

No.

Phyrexians Story Info

New 25 Dec 2017 Asked by svstrauser 30 Comments

Dear Mark, it's that awesome time of the year, and by that I obviously mean my Birthday (why? Is there something else happening around this time of the year?)! So, I believe it's time for my question! Can I have some more info on my favorite faction, about which I ask every year: The Phyrexians? Oh, and happy holydays (and thanks for answering to so many of my complaints!)! =D

The Phyrexians were part of the very first story to appear on cards (aka The Borhers War - told in pieces of Antiquities flavor text). Richard wrote a tiny story about two mages dueling but that was in the Alpha rulebook and not on the cards. Happy Birthday!

Fallen Empires Context

New 19 Dec 2017 Asked by jasonvorthos-blog 12 Comments

In the beginning, a lot of set were designed by playtesting team. East Coast playtester; Antiquities + Ice Age Bridge Club; Mirage + Visions Peter Adkison rpg friends; Legends + Homeland What's the context behind Fallen Empire? Was it rushed like Arabian Night? It feel so weird and different than the other sets of its time. It is also very cohesive in flavor.

Fallen Empires was designed by the East Coast Playtesters (Skaff Elias, Jim Lin, Dave Petty & Chris Page), the same design team that did Antiquities, Ice Age & Alliances.
