Inquisitor

Positive UB Feedback

New 29 Feb 2024 Asked by nephilv 25 Comments

Inspired by all the Detective cards, I recently opened my Esper-colored Warhammer Commander precon, Inquisitor Greyfax, and starting putting together an Investigate Commander deck. I ended up with "draws matter" and "artifacts matter" themes to go with the Clues and lined up numerous Doctor Who UB characters (mostly companions) and one or two from the Stranger Things Secret Lair drop. Lastly, I found Starscream from Transformer in my Brother's War stuff and he went along nicely with drawing matters. While this is certainly a strange combination of properties, building the deck was fun and I've been embracing UB as part of the process.

The Fallout set looks amazing and I've always been a fan of the series. I'm pretty neutral on Assassin's Creed and even Marvel, but good card designs get me excited no matter who the characters are, so I'll be picking some up surely. So there's some positive feedback for UB. To make this an ask, is there a place we can suggest possible properties to seek out for future UBs? I have a wish list.

Tell me and I can pass them along.

Detective Subtypes Future

New 12 Oct 2023 Asked by sjk9000 44 Comments

Previously, sleuths, investigators, and other detective-esque creatures were given creature types like Scout, Advisor, Rogue, or Soldier. Now that UB has given us Detective and Inquisitor, can we expect to see those subtypes in non-UB products?

Maybe. : )

Universes Beyond & Creature Types

New 21 Jul 2023 Asked by maw-of-the-obzedat 30 Comments

Is there any chance of using creature types introduced in Universes Beyond products in normal Magic sets? I can think of plenty of cards that could use Inquisitor from the 40K decks or Doctor from the Doctor Who decks.

As long as the creature type isn’t a brand specific term, sure.

Creature Type Updates

New 01 Mar 2023 Asked by captainjackharness 36 Comments

Any thoughts on giving creatures with types in their name the actual creature type? Such as Shadowmoor's Demigod of Revenge getting Demigod, in addition to its Spirit Avatar types it already has? Or Elite Inquisitor getting Inquisitor? Or the Aether Revolt Rebels getting that?

When we errata creature types, we often do that, but not always. The word being in the name doesn’t always line up. A Giant Spider is not a Giant as an example.

Character Card Possibilities

Hello Mark!I am Vorthos player and a big fan of lore. Do you think the following characters could receive a card one day? - Kakkazan and their 3 fellow Kami - The “arabian” wizard depicted in “cryptic command” by Jason Rainville - The Unluckiest planeswalker - Azor (planeswalker) - Leonos II (azorius arbiter) - the Prahv (land) - Ludmilla from the “Sisters of stone death” - Archangel Maladola and the other members of the Orzhov triumvirate - a new version of Tsabo Tavoc (before or after being phyrexianised) - alternate reality characters like Orim, Samite InquisitorCan I have a maybe? :)

Maybe. : )

Generic Types Usage

New 15 Sep 2022 Asked by tmbocheeko 21 Comments

Hey Mark, the 40K decks add both generic types (like Inquisitor and arguably Primarch) and 40K specific types (like Tyranid and Astartes.) You already mentioned we might see different types for the specific types in the Universes Within versions, but are the generic types on the table for other products?

It matters case by case, but potentially.

Inquisitor Captain and White Pie

Mark, does Inquisitor Captain imply that White can get Collected Company-like effects in-pie nowadays?

It’s something white can do, yes.

Possibility of White Life Loss

New 20 Jul 2021 Asked by quantext 42 Comments

Could white get life loss again? There were some white cards in New Phyrexia that got it like Inquisitor Exarch and Suture Priest.

It’s a bend we did specifically for New Phyrexia, and is something we could consider in the right set. It’s not a normal part of white though.

Bend or Break?

Is Inquisitor Exarch a bend or a break?

It’s a bend.

Kaladesh Goblin Existence

New 21 Apr 2016 Asked by pbtenchi-blog 13 Comments

destined-inquisitor asked: Does Kaladesh have goblins? That’s more of a Doug question. I don’t remember seeing any in Magic Origins. Bogart brute?

I was talking about the cards set on Kaladesh.

MonoWhite Behavior

New 16 May 2015 Asked by kevinmayfield 13 Comments

"Once again, a monoWhite character does not torture people." Aren't there exceptions to this, in the instance tha thte torturer believe the troture is to the benefit of the torturee, i.e., an inquisitor who will "destroy the body to save the soul"?

There are circumstances one could come up with. The key is that a monoWhite character has a strong moral code that they function by.

FTV Doubling Suggestions

New 16 Dec 2013 Asked by umbralunanox 51 Comments

What cards would be in FTV: Doubling? Off the top of my head all I can think of is Doubling Season and Parallel Lives, and those two are almost the same card.

A few off the top of my head: • Furnace of Rath • Chameleon Colossus • Doubling Cube  • Goblin Charbelcher • Kalonian Hydra • Solarian • Beacon of Immortality • Evolution Vat • Game of Chaos • Gratuitous Violence • Inquisitor’s Flail

Color Mindsets

New 02 Nov 2013 Asked by anaivecynic 9 Comments

Blue is the most open-minded color. Least open-minded is...? (I'm assuming white, just because of those inquisitors.)

I guess white as it assumes it already knows all the answers.

Trepanation Blade Explanation

New 18 May 2012 Asked by silent7seven 1 Comments

During Innistrad spoiler season, I knew to look out for a Chainsaw design, so when I saw it spoiled, I immediately recognized it. Except that I later found out that it was Trepanation Blade, not the one I'd thought: Inquisitor's Flail. The Flail still seems more like a Chainsaw to me; the wielder deals a ton more damage by letting down his defense. How does a Chainsaw mill? If you're carving into someone's head, he's just dead.

The milling was just a means to determine a random amount of damage which has the potential to get very high.

Flavor Text Feedback

New 30 Apr 2012 Asked by rzage 9 Comments

Who do I email/twitter/facebook to (eloquently) voice my dislike about the tons of 'jokey' flavor texts we've been getting? They are all so bad, and really take me out of any flavor. For example today's Card of the Day, Moorland Inquisitor: "Inquisitors are taught scripture, philosophy, and the fine art of sharpening an axe." I mean come on.

We do market research on our flavor text. If you see it continuing or going up in volume, that means there is a substantial part of our audience that enjoys that kind of flavor text.

Protections Phrasing

New 19 Sep 2011 Asked by fangfabio 0 Comments

Why Elite Inquisitor doesn't say "Protection from non-Human creatures"? Too good?

The phrase is very hard to parse. Are instants non-Human creatures?
