Conflict between Philosophers and Advisors

New 19 Jun 2024 Asked by blorpityblorpboop 5 Comments

Will philosophers ever be a creature type or will they continue to be advisors?

We’ve had the opportunity to do it and haven’t, so I’ll call it unlikely.

Changing Terminology

New 18 May 2024 Asked by dungeonmasterryan 133 Comments

"We have cultural advisors who give us advice about word usage. Tribal was one of the words that was tagged as having sensitivity issues, so we chose to change it" Corporate paid for consultants and they had to ruin something, understood

Magic has changed terminology many times in its lifetime. Players take a short period to adapt and then the language becomes natural. It’s a small price to pay to allow members of the community to feel more accepted.

Terminology Sensitivity

New 18 May 2024 Asked by dungeonmasterryan 64 Comments

Mark what was wrong with the tribal type? Why change it to a confusing new word? (Confusing in the sense no card printed says kindred)

We have cultural advisors who give us advice about word usage. Tribal was one of the words that was tagged as having sensitivity issues, so we chose to change it. I understand that whenever we talk about sensitivity issues around words, there are a wide range of opinions, even people from some of the affected groups who like the word, but part of trying to be respectful of a diverse audience is being aware of the impact that words can have.

Clown Advisor Possibility

Could we ever see a clown advisor creature type line

Potentially.

Detective Subtypes Future

New 12 Oct 2023 Asked by sjk9000 44 Comments

Previously, sleuths, investigators, and other detective-esque creatures were given creature types like Scout, Advisor, Rogue, or Soldier. Now that UB has given us Detective and Inquisitor, can we expect to see those subtypes in non-UB products?

Maybe. : )

You may. : )

Creature Type Silliness

What's the least silliest creature type?

It probably varies person to person. I find Brushwaggs pretty funny. EDIT: Oops, read that wrong. Least funny? Advisor. : )

Appreciation and Birthday Trivia

New 12 Dec 2022 Asked by greatknightgaramond 33 Comments

Hey Mark, A few months ago, I posted a question about life changes and taking big leaps, and I wanted to voice my appreciation for your advice. I was in the process of quitting my corporate job and going back to teaching college, and it’s been the best decision I’ve ever made. Just last week, I signed on to be the faculty advisor for a group of students who wanted to make an MtG club on campus. So thanks for Making Magic, in all the ways you do it.For the Sacred Rite of Birthday Trivia, any fun facts about one of the teachers in Magic lore? Do you have an all-time favorite teacher/mentor figure in the story?

I’ve always had a soft spot for Barrin. That’s why Michael and I chose him to be Hanna’s father. Happy Birthday! And thanks for the update. Glad things are going so well.

Batching Class Types as Humanoid

New 06 Jul 2022 Asked by obazervazi 23 Comments

What if you batched class types as "humanoid"? I can't think of many soldiers, clerics, or advisors that are in no way humanoid, and there aren't too many Humans or Elves and such with no class type, either.

The problem is that numerous creature types don’t neatly break not the category. I think the system could allow a little wiggle, but I worry in this case it’s too much.

Alexander Clamilton Praise

New 29 Jan 2020 Asked by itscrispycoffeecollector 57 Comments

Sung to the opening number of Hamilton[How does a bivalve, oyster, pun on a war/ Vet and Shellfish, shown in the middle of a clam-mander duel/ In possession of an aqueous armament standing,/ In a hard shell, show up to be an advisor and a rebel?] Alexander Clamilton is a shell-smashing success of a design! Please distribute high fives all around! I absolutely love the duel mechanic and it feels like it could absolutely be black border with only a couple of minor tweaks.

High fives to be delivered. Lines of rules text is a silver border only thing as reprints don’t always have the same number of lines of rules text.

Flavor Judge Background

New 29 Jan 2020 Asked by nouser1000-blog 44 Comments

Mark! I really love white cards and advisors, so I'm very happy with Flavor Judge! Where are advisors on the Beeble Scale? And what's the flavor of Flavor Judge?

I think we’ll see other Advisors. Flavor Judge is just a chicken that really enjoys both the structure and creative of the game.

Requests For Strange Tribals

New 23 Aug 2019 Asked by persistentpeanut 29 Comments

Can I request more strange tribals cards, such as cards that care about Trilobites, Advisors, Gargoyles, and/or Turtles in upcoming sets?

Tribal cards work best when there’s enough of a base of that creature type. We’re much more likely to fill in gaps for creature types that show up in 100+ cards than 5.

Advisor Role

New 14 Jun 2019 Asked by just-an-average-kiwi 30 Comments

Isn't Advisor a decent stand in for lord or leader? It seems every character that ISN'T a warrior or wizard or something awesome is an advisor to show they're good with people and politics. I.e Teysa

I wouldn’t call a king or Queen an advisor.

Magic Club Appreciation

New 27 Aug 2018 Asked by aguilamagica 36 Comments

Mark! I'm an MtG club advisor for the kids at my school. I've already had new students come in this year having heard about the game and wanting to learn; my homemade intro decks are ready! Thank you, your team, and everyone else (looking at you, art people!) for such an awesome game that brings fun, camaraderie, and welcome break to these students in the oft-stressful environment of school.

Thank you for reaching out and helping kids.

Zodiac Dragon Errata

New 21 Jul 2018 Asked by djscrub 21 Comments

Why is the functional errata on Zodiac Dragon, who worked with P3K cards like Control of the Court and Cunning Advisor when printed but does not now, an exception to the rule?

That change to Zodiac Dragon is just updating it to modern templating. It’s important that cards that work similarly have the same template and we use “when” now for it not “if”.

Ninjas and Rat Request

May I request four Turtles with the Ninja class as well as a legendary Rat Advisor with the appropriate color identity to be played in the same commander deck please?

What, no female human?

Translation Gender Issues

New 26 Mar 2018 Asked by beautifulboodle 77 Comments

Hey, can you tell us more about why foreign translations lock down genders to cards?

Let’s say we make an advisor. In some languages, the word for female advisor is different than the word for male advisor, so the translator asks whether the advisor is male or female (or both or neither). The name for the card and/or the text might be influenced by this, so if we make a reprint it’s new art, we want to match the gender so the words stay the same. (Note: I made up an example. This example may it may not actually be true.)

Type Line Space Limit

New 23 Feb 2018 Asked by dvoraen 26 Comments

"Just curious, do you think 'Legendary Artifact Creature - Cyborg' would fit on the type line?" "I do not." Sen Triplets was Legendary Artifact Creature - Human Advisor, but I've wondered if that is the absolute limit for typeline characters due to the shrink in size.

Maybe it would fit,

Kaladesh Flavor Critique

New 18 Feb 2017 Asked by hawk7915 54 Comments

"Yet none of the sets you named had a mechanical integration. What did you want Kaladesh to have that it didn’t?" I think it's less about mechanical integration and more about flavor integration. Kaladesh clearly has people that look Indian, which is great, but the architecture style doesn't scream "India" and there are no, say, Rakshashaor Loxodons. Faith is a key part of Indian mythology, yet Kaladesh is described as being agnostic in Planeshift: Kaladesh. No Rusalka or Puca like other sets.

The problem is we were interacting with a living religion and so we had to step lightly. One of our advisors, for example, told us to avoid loxodon as it would be offensive to some.
