Absence of 5-Color Mechanics

New 29 May 2024 Asked by trifas 28 Comments

Domain, Sunburst and Converge were all absent in MH3. Is it because the colorless theme of the set made difficult to make 5-color mechanics work well?

I assume that was a big part of it.

Design Template Views

New 11 Jul 2023 Asked by nightfiremelody 29 Comments

What is your opinion on the design template of cards costing a certain color to cast, but only having a meaningful impact if other colors are spent as part of their cost? For example, in original Ravnica, when a card would say, "if [color] was spent to cast ~, [do this]." Or, in a similar vein, Converge in BFZ.

It’s useful in certain types of design.

Game-Winning Cards

New 26 May 2023 Asked by blazinjsin 32 Comments

Are we likely to get more cards like Celestial Convergence that can potentially make any player win the game?

Possibly. The trick is you build your deck to do what your deck does. It’s hard to win in a way you didn’t plan for.

Sci-Fi Set Possibilities

New 22 Feb 2022 Asked by irrepressiblenaiad 95 Comments

With magic dipping its toes into sci-fi with neon dynasty and unfinity... what are the chances of getting a Space: the Converge set printed? I've wanted it since I read that article, back when it was released!

Which would people prefer: Space: the Convergence (Magic done as if it was about science fiction changing all the terminology)A science fiction set with science fiction flavor but using all the same terminology?

Designer’s Role in Game Enjoyment

New 28 Feb 2021 Asked by dialekktik-blog 147 Comments

"There are two paths - you can play what’s fun or you can play what’s going to win." In your GDC talk you said that it's the designers job to make sure these paths are the same.

We have much more control the smaller the environment. For example, we have significant control over how a limited environment plays out. There we can make the fun path converge with the competitive path. There are many fun aspects in having an environment with 20,000+ cards to choose from, but it’s near impossible for us game designers to have much control of it.

Balancing Fun and Winning

New 28 Feb 2021 Asked by cairnwanderer 85 Comments

"If it lets them embrace Magic in a way that allows them to bond with it, isn’t that a net positive experience?" Only if it doesn't ruin that bond for anyone else. In competitive formats the risk of being forced to play with the cards or be punished does exactly that.

There are two paths - you can play what’s fun or you can play what’s going to win. While those two paths will sometimes converge, they often will go in different directions.

Converge Dependency Regrets?

New 09 Oct 2020 Asked by lellauren 33 Comments

Hey Mark! For Converge (more colors more power) do you have any regrets making it dependent on color rather than type, as it now excludes colorless mana?

I do not.

Mechanic Card Quantity

New 16 Sep 2019 Asked by silas-mn 34 Comments

I recently noticed that often a mechanic will get a very small amount of cards in a set (Soulbond with ~20 in INN and Converge with 12 in BFZ, being the ones I was looking at). Why do so many mechanics get such a limited amount of space in a set?

Either that’s all the space the set has for them or all the space the mechanic does.

Domain vs Converge

New 12 May 2019 Asked by trifas 28 Comments

What's more likely? Domain and Converge on the same set, to reinforce a theme; or in different sets, as they play in similar space?

They fight for the same effects (there’s only so many scalable things to do), that they’d have a hard time co-existing in the same set.

Reprinting With New Names

New 20 Oct 2018 Asked by ryuaqua92 27 Comments

Is it possible that a preexisting old card could be reprinted with a new name for the same mechanic? (e.g. reprinting Engineered Explosives with Converge instead of Sunburst, or reprinting Primalcrux saying "devotion to green" instead of Chroma)

If we revamped the mechanic as a larger thing like devotion and chroma.

Confirmed Guild Mechanics

Have Converge, Mentor, Surveil, Jump and Undergrowth been confirmed as guild mechanics?

Yes, on the Magic stream.

Converge Mechanic Origin

New 07 Mar 2017 Asked by mrcobweb 53 Comments

I ask this question out of pure design interest, please read it with no intention of criticism or negativity. How does a mechanic like converge get selected for a block like return to zendikar? On one end is the new function of the block-care about finding and using colorless mana- and on the other end doing a 180 and asking players to do the opposite-care about all the main colors?

The mechanic wasn’t made in design so I gave to guess at the intentions. I believe it stemmed from trying to give more identity to the Allies and it was contrasting the Eldrazi which were focused on colorlessness. At the time, Oath of the Gatewatch did not yet have its colorless mana theme. That said, yes, in retrospect, it was a mistake.

Crystalline Crawler Mechanics

New 12 Nov 2016 Asked by planeswalker-umbral 36 Comments

Why was Crystalline Crawler given Converge over Sunburst?

It was set on Zendikar.

Converge Vs. Sunburst

New 30 Oct 2016 Asked by berzerkdragon 37 Comments

Why does Crystalline Crawler have Converge instead of Sunburst? Is Converge considered a "fixed" Sunburst or something?

The card is flavored as being from Zendikar. Sunburst was original Mirrodin.

Revisiting Past Keywords

New 26 Oct 2016 Asked by codenamejd 67 Comments

Proliferate, Domain, Converge - I'm a big fan of keywords and ability words from the past getting individual uses in Commander sets when appropriate - especially when used in such incredible ways as these! Thanks :)

I had nothing to do with this particular set, but I’ll pass along the kind words to the design and development teams.

Rhyming Mechanics Merge

New 16 Jul 2016 Asked by tnessfftto 65 Comments

"Surge" and "Emerge," rhyming cost-reduction mechanics only 2 sets apart--any chance these two will meld (or, one might even say, merge) into a third mechanic in Aether Revolt? ;-)

Maybe every other set will have a rhyming mechanic: dirge, urge, scourge, diverge, submerge, a reprint of converge. : )

Mechanics Waiting Game

Converge Mechanic Confusion

New 14 Dec 2015 Asked by ultimatetoppa 26 Comments

Somehow i automatically assumed that the new colorless symbol would work with converge and i find it really confusing that it doesnt. I get it, it makes sense, but I really think it's a missed opportunity and it would greatly benefit the format.

Colorless is in some ways like a sixth color, but it is *not* a sixth color.

BFZ Limited Feedback

New 06 Dec 2015 Asked by mort459 50 Comments

So I actually really like BFZ limited, but I feel its fair for you to get some focused constructive criticism: my opinion is that green isn't UNIVERSALLY underpowered. The issue is that it's top-3 commons lag well behind the other 4 colors. Also, it's synergy gimmick, Converge, isn't nearly as good as awaken/devoid/allies. This means that it is very playable in sealed, but not consistent enough in draft. I'm curious if other Question Marks and/or Development agrees with this.

Very concisely put. Thank you.
