Exile Mechanic Future

New 31 Dec 2023 Asked by greatdinn 24 Comments

The talk about ingest, and the release of LCI made me curious: what are the odds we see a set that cares about the amount of cards or type of cards in Exile? At least, in a similar way to graveyard focused sets.

Low. Our goal is to not make exile a second graveyard.

Mechanic Revival Possibilities

New 30 Dec 2023 Asked by donalton 40 Comments

Hey Mark, I was wondering something about lesser loved mechanics. One of my favorite mechanics of all time is Ingest - a nd while I doubt it'll happen, I loved to see it (or a fixed/powered up version) make a return. Does the team ever try and look back at these mechanics and try and make better or "fixed" versions? If so, how often? And can I get a maybe on Ingest eventually get a redo (maybe exiling cards equal to damage dealt)?

We do occasionally redo mechanics. Discover in The Lost Caverns of Ixalan is a recent example. What do I think ingest’s chances are? Honestly, not high, but it’s possible.

Toxic Keyword Justification

New 18 Jan 2023 Asked by myheartgoesoontz 63 Comments

For anyone complaining about Poisonous being dropped for Toxic: Poisonous means specifically chemically harmful to swallow, breathe, absorb or otherwise ingest, while Venomous refers to animals that have a chemically harmful bite, barb, or sting. Toxic is a broader word that covers both kinds of harmful chemical delivery. As most Phyrexians are more venomous than poisonous, the broader term seems more appropriate.

Mechanics of Kozilek's Brood

New 24 Jul 2021 Asked by spyrohawk 32 Comments

I am reading Ethan Fleischer's "A First Time for Everything" article and he mentions that, while trying to make a mechanic for Kozilek's brood that was distinct from Ulamog's ingest+process mechanic, they tried a lot of different mechanics to capture Kozilek's physics-warping nature. They were interesting, but none were deep enough, so they became abilities and the main mechanic became using {C}. Do you know what any of those mechanics were? Would you describe some of them?

I was on the design team, but that is a long time ago with a lot of designs since. I don’t remember.

Megamorph Criticism

New 12 May 2020 Asked by itsmearia 25 Comments

Regarding Megamorph, I disliked it because it felt so flat. Here's a brand new mechanic to play in the neat morph/manifest format and it turns out it's just morph + a +1 +1 counter. It felt uninspired. At least with other mechanics that ended up poor (Sweep, Ingest) you could tell a lot of thought and effort went into making them and they just didn't work out. Megamorph just felt like R&D forgot to do their homework and scraped something together right before class to get parti credit.

Block planning had a variant that didn’t work out. Smorph got shot down because it didn’t play well with normal morph. We didn’t find a great answer, but not because we didn’t look.

Blue's Creature Removal

New 09 Feb 2019 Asked by le-flesh 58 Comments

“Blue can’t remove creatures unless it then replaces them with another creature”. Firstly, I wholehearedly disagree and think you're playing "Excuses for me and not for Thee". Secondly, explain Phyrexian Ingester.

I respect that you disagree with how we’ve chosen to position blue’s portion of the color pie, but it is how we’ve chosen to do it. And it’s been this way for almost the entirety of the game. No argument with my in this blog is going to change that, but I do enjoy your passion. As for Phyrexian Infester. It’s a break. Blue shouldn’t remove an opponent’s creature to make itself bigger. If the card requires you to exile your own creature, it would be okay in blue.

Mechanic Reception

I thought the processing/ingest mechanic was flavorful and fun. Is that an uncommon opinion?

They were not particularly well liked.

Combining Zendikar Keywords

New 04 Jul 2018 Asked by btwofftopic 35 Comments

About Battle for Zendikar block... You couldn't even remember Ingest as part of the Processors theme (not complaining, just to show how little resonant it was). Devoid has gotten a negative feedback because it doesn't do anything by itself. WHAT IF they had been the same keyword? (kiiiiind of like the process of how Infect came to be, fusing Wither with Poison.) I understand it would've been an entirely different concept for the block, but still.

I have no idea how to combine those two elements into a cohesive singular thing. Also, you would be taking a major simple theme and making it significantly more complicated. The actual solution to devoid was writing it out and not keywording it because it was the expectations of a keyword that caused the problem. Players reported that they liked how it played.

A/B Mechanic Balance

New 12 Apr 2017 Asked by comelyman13 32 Comments

Recently you've spoken about A/B mechanics as problematic, such as Madness and Ingest/Process. Do you have any advice for avoiding pitfalls when making A/B mechanics or are they just usually better to avoid all together? Thanks!

The trick is getting the right balance. They’re too fun to just ignore.

Gitrog Gatewatch Fantasy

New 24 Jun 2016 Asked by glasstiki-blog1 168 Comments

Can I get a maybe that the Gitrog Monster eats Gideon and takes his place on the Gatewatch? This would get rid of the least interesting man in the multiverse, create that nonhumanoid planeswalker people are asking for, and add black mana to the team. Plus I'm sure there are all sorts of probably plane threatening things for the Gitrog to control and ingest on other worlds.

A bold suggestion.

Complexity Measurement

New 16 Apr 2016 Asked by royinversezx 23 Comments

"Double the keyword mechanics for starters." I think that doesnt count since you have mechanics from other sets not named(morbid and landfall), transform isnt named, but it doesnt count as 1 either because theres a lot of ways to transform, also you say complexity is how hard it is to track something, and delirum while beign only one mechanic i think it adds the complexity of 2 or 3 "normal" mechanics. I think you should make a point system, not just count the number of mechanics to get the Clvl

A couple points: 1) Individual card mechanics don’t count because every set does that.
2) Transform is in fact named. It’s called “transform”. : )
3) Yes, Delirium is more complex than the average mechanic but so too was Processors and Ingest.
4) Battle for Zendikar had a *lot* going on and pushed in numerous new and foreign design spaces making it harder to grok than the average set.
5) I’m not saying Shadows over Innistrad isn’t complex. I’m saying it’s less complex than Battle for Zendikar.

Green's Power BFZ

New 10 Apr 2016 Asked by tewhit 18 Comments

About green in BFZ... I have to respectfully disagree its low power was all a development problem. In a synergy-heavy format, it lacked the same Ally support as R/W/B or the Ingest/Process synergy of U/B/R. Isn't that more of a design issue?

No, it is not. Balance of volume is also development’s domain.

Future of Ingest Mechanic

If survey finds ingest to be popular, could it become a black blue ability for the future?

Highly unlikely. Not an evergreen mechanic.

Ingest Mechanic Humor

New 18 Jan 2016 Asked by mrpopogod 140 Comments

How come we can't eat the delicious cards, but Ingest, a mechanic all about eating the delicious cards, is ok?

When the Eldrazi eat them in the story, they’re not cards. Also, Eldrazi tend to ignore lawyers. Actually, the Eldrazi probably eat lawyers.

Terminology Use

New 10 Jan 2016 Asked by gutterstorm 21 Comments

Does it bother you at all that people misuse your terminology. Personally it drives me batty when people use parasitic on things like ingest or processors that literally interact with things that have been around since Alpha.

I’m used to it. I try to use mistakes as an opportunity to educate.

Kozilek Brood Mechanics

New 09 Jan 2016 Asked by iamnotyourfatherluke-blog 54 Comments

Ulamog's brood had Ingest-was an actual mechanic ever considered for Kozilek's brood, or did you think it'd be easier/more flavourful/less boring to give Kozilek's brood all these weird, unique abilities?

Kozilek’s peeps use colorless mana as a cost.

Mechanics Waiting Game

Ulamog's Function

New 20 Dec 2015 Asked by goldgaridelve 52 Comments

"The way it was explained to me was Kozilek warps physics and Emrakul warps biology." What does Ulamog do? Just consume/ingest/exile/process?

Ulamog eats things.

Ingest vs Colorless Cost

New 15 Dec 2015 Asked by false---prophet 57 Comments

What makes you put ingest in the first set but not colorless cost?

The first was an Ulamog thing and the second a Kozilek thing. Ingest was for the insatiable titan and colorless mana matters was for the physics warping one.

Kozilek's specific use

New 11 Dec 2015 Asked by nayr1230-deactivated20180614 58 Comments

I have a question about the Oath of the Gatewatch spoilers. Wastes are a new type of basic land that produce colorless mana, and Kozilek and I assume other Eldrazi brood in OOG must be cast utilizing mana produced from Wastes or other colorless sources (if they have the Waste-looking mana symbol in their costs). Why was this only applied to Kozilek and I assume other Eldrazi brood in OOG, and not to Ulamog? It seems weird to only apply it to one half of the set.

It’s a Kozilek thing. Ingest and Processors were an Ulsmog thing. Different Eldrazi work a bit differently.
