Annihilator

Future of Annihilator in Sets

New 01 Jun 2024 Asked by jimmycomments 0 Comments

Hi Mark - at some point, I assume we will see the Eldrazi in a non-supplemental set again. I would like to ask very nicely that when it happens, it isn't alongside annihilator, please. I thinks the Eldrazi are visually really cool and I like the inscrutable cosmic horror side of them but annihilator is probably the mechanic I like least in all of mtg's history. I hate playing against it and I feel guilty if I play with it myself.

I do not expect us to bring annihilator back to premier sets.

Views on Annihilator Condition

New 29 Apr 2024 Asked by khaoskrtr 29 Comments

How do you feel about "[condition] Annihilator?" Like, "Artifact Annihilator," "1/1 creature Annihilator," or "Token Annihilator?"

Not great. If it matters, it plays like normal Annihilator (aka unfun), and if it doesn’t, it’s just wordy text with minimal game play impact.

Return of Annihilator Mechanic?

New 29 Apr 2024 Asked by rovel7 40 Comments

Hi Mark!, you have stated that annihilator its no a very good mechanic, (and i agree, i dont like it forces land sacrifice if you have nothing else), why birng it back? Feels like eldrazi really dont have other meaningful mechanic by comparison

Other than the occasional one-of in something nostalgic, I don’t see annihilator returning as a whole mechanic anytime soon.

Segovian Eldrazi Feedback

New 01 Apr 2023 Asked by crinfarr 59 Comments

I love the design of the new Segovian eldrazi, but don't you think 2/2 is a little too large? Even without Annihilator ⅓ it seems like it would break lots of formats...

Play design says it’s okay. Although, I am dubious about making players rip cards in half. I guess time will tell.

Hypothetical Annihilator Colors

New 17 Feb 2023 Asked by nothingbutland-blog 41 Comments

If Annihilator was made deciduous; what color(s) would you put it in? I think either Red and/or Black or White and/or Black. But several in my playgroup think White & Red or Green & Red.

We wouldn’t, but given the hypothetical, black and red are most likely.

Annihilator Design Lessons

"Annihilator 5 is a very unfun ability for the opponent."Well, yes, but Emrakul already has Annihilator 6. The request was for a card that fills in the gap at 5.

Annihilator 6 taught us not to make Annihilator 5.

Annihilator Ability Feedback

I know this is hard to do but can we get a card with Annihilator 5? We have at least 1 card with with numbers of 1-6 without the a 5.

Annihilator 5 is a very unfun ability for the opponent.

Phyrexian Eldrazi Sliver Dragon Wizard

New 01 Apr 2020 Asked by myfavoriteflavorisblue 43 Comments

Maro! I heard there's a Phyrexian Eldrazi Sliver Dragon Wizard Planeswalker Nicol Bolas with Infectious Library Annihilator 1 in Ikoria! How could you?!

I said it was monster world.

Real Card Potential

New 08 Nov 2019 Asked by nijuugo-san 83 Comments

What are the chances of some of these test cards getting tweaked and actually becoming cards? As someone who loves slivers to death, and even coincidentally created a custom sliver-eldrazi card 7 years ago that gave annihilator to slivers (because I just really wanted that to be a thing), seeing Slivdrazi Monstrosity almost gave me a heart attack. I want it to be real with every single fiber of my being!

Part of doing the playtest cards was to elicit reactions from the players. What playtest cards do you all most want to one day become a real Magic card?

Future of Annihilator Mechanic

New 16 Jul 2019 Asked by reliable-gossip 39 Comments

Hey MaRo, what is your opinion about Annihilator? Should it remain exclusive to old Eldrazi, or can it ever find life in the future with other big creatures?

R&D is very down on Annihilator, so I’m not sure you’ll see it on a new design.

Balancing Annihilator

New 01 Jun 2019 Asked by tbjanowski 53 Comments

Is Annihilator was symmetrical and both playera had to sack permanents, would it be more balenced? Since this would help prevent the full snowball effect that it currently does, while making it both powerful and still flavorful or not something considered?

Continually losing permanents is not the recipe for fun.

Annihilator Mechanic Thoughts

New 01 Jun 2019 Asked by oatmealftw-blog 76 Comments

With many powerful/weird/high storm-scale mechanics in Modern Horizons, was there any thought/talk about Annihilator?

No, we don’t consider it a fun mechanic. The first person to attack with a creature with Annihilator wins ten turns later.

Annihilator Reprint Odds

New 21 Feb 2019 Asked by anythingelsemxyzptlk 47 Comments

Hi I was looking at the storm scale and saw that annihilator was said to be at a 9. What specifically made annihilator unlikely to be reprinted?

It is unfun and unpopular. (Those two things are related.)

Unique Colorless Effects

New 25 Feb 2018 Asked by v3rb4tim 51 Comments

"Are there any effects only colorless can do?" Not sure if you'd count it as an effect exactly, but Annihilator only shows up on colorless cards.

Fair point.

Keywords Rules Clarification

New 04 Dec 2017 Asked by maygekyatt 53 Comments

You've said that Annihilator 1 and Annihilator 6 both count as an instance of the same keyword for Modular Monstrosity, but what about Forestwalk and Islandwalk? Do they count as separate keywords, or are they both instances of Landwalk? For that matter, what about Denimwalk? Is it also a form of Landwalk?

Here’s how it works. If the keyword name stays the same but just the number changes (Annihilator, Rampage, etc.), you can only name it once a day. If the name of the ability switches words (landwalk, protection, etc.) you can name each version once per day. In other words, if you say Annihilator 4, you can’t then name Annihilator 2 on the same day, but if you name islandwalk, you can later name mountainwalk on the same day.

Modular Monstrosity Rules

New 02 Dec 2017 Asked by tungsten-pyre-blog 22 Comments

Modular monstrosity: 1st game; "Annihilator 2" 2nd game; "Annihilator 4"? Or only one version of a keyword per day regardless of number difference? Thanks for answering.

Only one version of Annihilator (or any mechanic) per day.

Modular Monstrosity Rules

New 30 Nov 2017 Asked by slimefoot-the-goaway 26 Comments

Apologies if you've already answered this, but can you give numerical keywords to modular monstrosity? (Mainly asking for giving annihilator X)

Not only can you, you must and it must have been something printed on a card.

Annihilator Keyword Limit

New 18 Nov 2017 Asked by somejname 15 Comments

For modular monstrosity, can you add a keyword with a different number, but the same name? or does that count as the same keyword.

If the mechanic has a number, you must specify and that version has to have been printed on a creature card. Which Annihilator do you mean? Once you’ve said Annihilator regardless of the number, it’s been said.

Monstrosity Keyword Range

New 18 Nov 2017 Asked by mistershinyobject 17 Comments

Can modular monstrocity only name one-word keywords (lifelink, prowess, undying), or also ones with modifiers, like annihilator 6, swampwalk, protection from everything, cumulative upkeep - add R, outlast W, etc.?

No, it can name any keyword regardless of word length. It just has to have been printed in a creature card.
