Vehicle vs Reconfigure

New 16 Apr 2024 Asked by clomethegnome 35 Comments

Hey Mark! I'm curious why Set Design went for the vehicle variation for mount rather than the reconfigure variant suggested by vision design, to me the latter seems to capture the 'creature that combines with a rider' idea really well. Although maybe this goes back to the unicycle equipment/vehicle debate

It was significantly less complex/wordy and more intuitive.

Unicycle Rules Query

New 13 Jun 2023 Asked by squirreling-dervish 29 Comments

Are there any rules issues with Unicycle? It seems pretty simple to me. Could we see equipment/vehicles in a premier set?

I’m not sure what rules complication comes from being both Equipment and a Vehicle.

Unicycle Design Challenges

Was there ever a unicycle in the Unfinity file? I really expected one!

We talked about it, but never found a design we liked. There is a playtest Unicycle in the Mystery Booster.

Unicycle Equipment Vs. Vehicle

New 14 Jul 2022 Asked by hyrosen-blog 32 Comments

Will Unfinity settle the unicycle equipment vs. vehicle debate?

I think the playtest cards settled that debate. : )There is a creature on a unicycle in Unfinity, but it doesn’t exist as a card by itself.

Universe of Plow Vehicles

There is no universe where a plow is a vehicle, not even the unicycle universe.

How about a snow plow? : )

Equipment versus Smaller Personal Vehicles

New 06 Sep 2020 Asked by ancientmalachite-blog 44 Comments

Hola Mark. I'm in the unicycle better fits an equipment camp, and I'd like to share my thoughts. Equipment is items needed/used for a particular task, and vehicles are equipment (dump trucks, bicycles, and tractors are heavy, sports, and farm equipment). Vehicles in Magic replace the user(s)'s stats and damage/effects suffered by the vehicle does not affect the user(s). Given that, smaller personal vehicles mechanically make more sense to me as equipment.

I do understand the other side’s position. And there are members of R&D who agree with you. I just lean towards the more intuitive answer which I find tends to follow word usage. That said, it’s clearly a grey area.

Unicycle as Equipment?

New 06 Sep 2020 Asked by getoutofthistownpod 23 Comments

Can you explain the argument behind a unicycle possibly being an equipment? It seems like a vehicle to me. It's a thing you ride that makes transport easier?

Some people draw the line as to what’s powering the object. If the person is powering the object, they view it as an equipment.

Unicycle Debate Continuation

New 06 Sep 2020 Asked by dalenthas 23 Comments

On the topic of the Great Unicycle Debate, where would you place rollerblades? Seems like they're pretty obviously equipment to me, but then again, I thought the same thing about unicycles...

Rollerblades aren’t a vehicle, so I’d say they’re equipment.

Talking through Unicycle Equipment

New 06 Sep 2020 Asked by mrpopogod 31 Comments

Did you ever resolve whether a unicycle is equipment or a vehicle? And if so could we someday see a cycle of cycles (bi, uni, and other)?

There’s a mystery booster playtest card where it’s both.

Unicycle Equipment Versus Vehicle

New 29 Aug 2020 Asked by inertcore 42 Comments

I read this like a year ago but it still bothers me. It was a designer search and they were designing a unicycle card, and someone made it an equipment. One of the judges was like "why make it an equipment when vehicles exist," and I'm concerned. The difference between a vehicle and a mobility-enhancing equipment, in my opinion, is if holding a sword will change your power level. If you're holding a sword in a car, it doesn't really do much, but if you hold a sword on a unicycle, you're deadlier

“One of the judges” was me. Here’s my criteria: if it’s a piece of equipment, it’s an Equipment. If it’s a vehicle, it’s a Vehicle. : )

Magic Carpet Quandary

New 06 Nov 2019 Asked by simicmimic 59 Comments

I hate to reopen the Great Unicycle Debate, but what would the power and toughness of a “crewed” magic carpet be? Wouldn’t it make more sense as equipment that granted flying?

My personal line for Vehicles: Do you ride it? If you wear or wield it, it’s an Equipment. If you ride it, it’s a Vehicle. As I learned during the great Unicycle Debate, others set the line differently.

Flying Carpet Classification

New 06 Aug 2019 Asked by zombie-illithid 143 Comments

If R&D designed a new flying carpet card, would it be a vehicle or an equipment?

Ah, the Unicycle debate. Let’s ask all of you, is a flying carpet a vehicle or an equipment? (I’m not taking about the card Flying Carpet as that is neither.)

Unicycle Equipment Request

New 11 Jun 2019 Asked by blazeunicycle 38 Comments

If the next unset has a Unicycle equipment vehicle, may I request that it is on fire?

The Unicycle is referencing Great Designer Search 3 where we had them design circus tropes and there was a big argument about whether a unicycle was a Vehicle or an Equipmemt.

Equipment Vehicle Feasibility

New 30 Jun 2018 Asked by phyrexianoracle 34 Comments

Per the unicycle debate. Would it be possible in black border to have an artifact that is both Equipment and Vehicle? Or is that combination of card types limited to silver border for now?

I’m skeptical we’d do that in black border.

Definition of Vehicle

New 07 Jun 2018 Asked by fightklubblog-waffles-blog-blog 36 Comments

A device like a unicycle or skateboard gives your own efforts mechanical advantage. A device like an automobile doesn't need your effort, it does work on its own. In my mind if it does it's own work and only needs your guidance as a driver it's a vehicle. If it's simply giving your efforts mechanical advantage you've got an equipment.

According to the dictionary, a Vehicle is “a conveyance moving on wheels, runners, tracks, or the like, as a cart, sled, automobile, or tractor”.

Vehicles vs Equipment

New 06 Jun 2018 Asked by papillon94 87 Comments

I feel like, in my mind at least, the core difference between Vehicles and Equipment is in whether it's an accessory or the focus. Though it fits the dictionary definition of a Vehicle, a Unicycle is defined much more by who's riding it than, say, a Car is by who's driving it.

You just said “whose riding it”. That’s one of my dividing lines. Do you “ride” it or “wield” it? If you ride it, it’s a Vehicle. If you wield it, it’s an Equipment.
