Token Creature Type Changes

New 24 Sep 2019 Asked by doortonothingness 33 Comments

Does creature type updating only apply to creature cards? Could Thatcher Revolt, say, get errata'd to produce Human Peasant tokens?

I don’t know if we’ve ever errataed token creature types. Anyone aware of an example?

Thatcher Revolt Details

Hey Maro, can you please tell me about Thatcher Revolt?

It was my favorite card I designed in Avacyn Restored. It connected a whole bunch of different limited strategies.

Tribal Card Type Development

New 22 Nov 2013 Asked by jackson-bailey 6 Comments

Beating a dead Horse here, but instead of making the card type Tribal, was it considered to just have all the creature types become subtypes that could be used on any card? That way you could still get flavor for things like Thatcher Revolt being a Human spell and the mechanics of things like Modern Masters' Rebels being able to fetch that Pacifism-like card that cost 2W that was a Rebel enchantment.

Tribal exists as a card type because the rules don’t allow different card types to have the same sub-types.

Haste Rules on Tokens

New 15 Jan 2013 Asked by chewylsb 10 Comments

It kind of bothers me that you keep printing tokens without the Haste rules text (Hellion Crucible, Thatcher Revolt, and now the two cards that make W/R Tokens in Gatecrash). It especially bothers me because there can actually be rules implications that can be derived from the tokens having haste, like mind control effects which players may miss because the tokens don't have the Haste line on them.

Adding haste requires an entirely different frame and thus a different art ratio. It can matter but it matters so infrequently, the decision was not to write haste on them. This allows development to add or delete haste after art has been commisioned.

Token Design Choices

New 14 Oct 2012 Asked by toshiro09-blog 3 Comments

Is there a reason Red Human tokens made by Thatcher Revolt do not have Haste printed on the card? It bothers me as there isn't another situation they are made without it.

A decision has been made not to put haste on tokens with haste as it only matters (for the vast, vast majority of cases) the turn it comes into play. Tokens with text require a different art ratio and it becomes complicated to write haste (it keeps the developers from changing the card later), so the editors have decided not to.

Preview Card Selection

New 10 Sep 2012 Asked by lagerbottoms 3 Comments

is your social media card again something like thatcher revolt, meaning one of your favorite cards of the set?

I don’t think I picked my preview this time. They knew I’m a huge Izzet fan so they gave me a cool Izzet card. Check back on Wednesday to see what it is.

FNM Deck Approval

New 24 Jun 2012 Asked by aurawarrior 6 Comments

I thought you'd like this. My FNM this week was Block Constructed, a format I have never played. So I decided to go with a deck I thought I would enjoy: a Thatcher Revolt/Goldnight Commander combo with added Snapcaster Mage goodness to flashback Thatcher Revolt. I threw in some burn spells, some more humans (Champion of the Parish is go!), and called it a deck. It was really fun to play, and I did pretty well. Thatcher Revolt; not just a limited card!

Your deck has the official “Maro thumbs up” stamp.

Doubling to Tripling Love

New 09 Jun 2012 Asked by lotier 10 Comments

So since Thatcher Revolt gives you 3 humans and Burn at the Stake deals three times the number of tapped creatures is your love for doubling becoming a love for tripling now? (How's that for cards you like?)

You’ve caught on. : )

Favorite Innistrad Card

New 09 Jun 2012 Asked by godavarism 0 Comments

When you did your Topical Blend column over stage magic and the best-designed modern Magic cards, Avacyn Restored wasn't out. Now that it is, would you change your answer for Innistrad block? Maybe to Thatcher Revolt?

No. Endless Ranks of the Dead beats out Thatcher Revolt for my favorite card in the block.

Exalted vs. Thatcher Revolt

New 25 May 2012 Asked by baomon 4 Comments

Are you sad that M13's Exalted mechanic will discourage people to play with Thatcher Revolt? :P

I never had any illusion that Thatcher Revolt was going to see much play in Standard.

Token Haste Explanation

New 21 May 2012 Asked by prot3ch 7 Comments

Why does red Human tokens doesn't have haste written on them? There is only one card (Thatcher Revolt) making red human tokens, and it says "1/1 red Human creature tokens with haste". All the other keyword mechanics like Flying, Deathtouch, Lifelink, Infect that I can think of in recent years was written in the token.

I asked and here’s the answer. Whether or not the card is vanilla (no text) or French Vanilla (just creature keywords) affects the ratio of the art, basically the card gets more art if there’s no text box. Editing decided that since haste disappears as relevant 99.9% after the first turn (what we in design refer to as a Virtual Vanilla - see all the lingo you get in this answer) it would just treat it as a vanilla card to avoid the problem of the art having to change if development shifted the card by adding or dropping haste.

Effective Card Presentation

If I play Thatcher Revolt while Emcee is in play, can I say "Presenting, three Humans!" or do I have to say "Presenting, Human!" three times?

Either is acceptable.

Have I really not talked publicly enough about Thatcher Revolt?

Thatcher Revolt Praise

New 01 May 2012 Asked by shadowclaimer 5 Comments

Thatcher Revolt is absolutely amazing, yesterday I played a test deck with WR Humans, had a Champion of the Parish out, Goldnight Commander, and Thraben Doomsayer (in Fateful Hour), I played Thatcher (+3/+3 to everything, +3/+3 counters to Champion), then tapped Doomsayer, Cloudshifted him, then tapped Doomsayer again, +5/+5 to everything (Goldnight), +2/+2 (Doomsayer), and a ramped up Champ. I won in a single turn sitting at 1 health. Thank you so much! I love this card!

Me too.

Thatcher Revolt Humor

Is it bad I like Thatcher Revolt is because I can make jokes about Margaret Thatcher and the miner's strike?

I’ll never advocate not making jokes.

Thatcher Revolt Design

New 30 Apr 2012 Asked by askblizzardbreeze-deactivated20 4 Comments

Havengul Vampire would like to say a big thank you for having the Thatcher Revolt tokens be sacrificed instead of exiled. Are they sacrificed because it's a red effect, or was the card actually designed to work with cards that care about creature death like the Vampire?

Thatcher Revolt was created to help everyone. That’s why it’s my favorite card. It just connects all over the place.

Thatcher Revolt Love

Not a question, but I just want you to know since Tumblr won't let me give you links in questions: I started a thread on reddit called "Reasons Why I Love Thatcher Revolt." Just wanted to let you know that I love this card.

As I’ve made clear it’s my favorite card in Avacyn Restored.

UR Humans Deck Praise

New 29 Apr 2012 Asked by ferrous-simian-blog 0 Comments

I just played a blue/red humans deck at the pre-release. It abused Nephalian Rogue, a card that seems innocuous until you realize that it interacts with all your creatures, and protects them at the same time! Thanks to your design team for an excellent design.

One of the things I love about Avacyn Restored’s design is all the synergies that aren’t readily apparent at first glance. Everyone seemed so dubious when I said I loved Thatcher Revolt. Now that people have played with the set, they’re going “Oh, now I see.”

Thatcher Revolt Inquiry

New 29 Apr 2012 Asked by cautrell 1 Comments

I pulled two Thatcher Revolts for my RGW deck at our local prerelease. On two or three occasions, it was critical to establishing early control of the board. Like other cards of its kind (Even the Odds, Join the Ranks, Raise the Alarm, etc.), it also promises to be great fun in Casual Constructed. Is there a Color Pie reason for White and Green to get the vast majority of such cards, and either way, are we likely to see more in Red, even if they have certain drawbacks compared with W & G?

The key for this being red is the temporary nature (along with haste) of the token creatures. As I love Thatcher Revolt, I’m lookking for places to use this again.

Red Human Token Query

New 28 Apr 2012 Asked by thesundry 5 Comments

Why do the red Human tokens in Avacyn Restored not have "Haste" printed on them?

I don’t know. The only red token maker Thatcher Revolt makes 1/1 red Humans with haste. I’ll have to ask on Monday.
