Designs in War of Spark

New 23 May 2019 Asked by wilsonosgoodmcman 38 Comments

Did any Modern Horizons designs get absorbed by War of the Spark? Makeshift Battalion, Tenth District Legionnaire, and Devouring Hellion seem like they were very obviously designed to have Battalion, Heroic, and Devour, respectively.

They were, but that was all the doing of the War of the Spark’s set design team.

Hellion Consolidation

New 05 Apr 2018 Asked by flavoracle 42 Comments

Regarding the "Hellion Consolidation Debate" you mentioned earlier, what creature type were you considering consolidating it into? Was it Wurms?

That was the argument. We couldn’t agree on which creature type to combine it with.

Birthday Trivia

New 05 Apr 2018 Asked by celestialtyrant 46 Comments

Ok, its finally April 5 and I can request birthday trivia! Is there anything in the Birthday Trivia Bag about either my favorite god, Karametra, or my favorite creature type, Hellion? Thank you!

During the Grand Creature Update, we talked about consolidating Hellion into another creature type, but after many days arguing about how to consolidate it, we left it alone. Happy Birthday!

Young Fan's Favorite Card

I would just like you to know that my 8 year old brother has replaced Cinder Hellion with Burning Sun's Avatar as his favorite card. Thanks for everything you do!

You’re welcome. Glad your brother likes it.

Green Creature Lords Interest

New 01 Apr 2014 Asked by mindymasks 16 Comments

Do you notice that people seem to ask for green creature lords more then other colors? I've seen asks for bear lords, ooze lords, and spider lords; but no one asking for vedelkan lords or hellion lords. Why do you think that is?

Green has a larger percentage of creature historically than every color but white and white’s creatures overall use less creature types than green.

Future of Hellions

Storm scale on more of the best Magic creature type: Hellions? Specifically, more rare Hellions like Blitz Hellion or Crater Hellion.

I doubt we’ve seen the last of hellions.

Haste Rules on Tokens

New 15 Jan 2013 Asked by chewylsb 10 Comments

It kind of bothers me that you keep printing tokens without the Haste rules text (Hellion Crucible, Thatcher Revolt, and now the two cards that make W/R Tokens in Gatecrash). It especially bothers me because there can actually be rules implications that can be derived from the tokens having haste, like mind control effects which players may miss because the tokens don't have the Haste line on them.

Adding haste requires an entirely different frame and thus a different art ratio. It can matter but it matters so infrequently, the decision was not to write haste on them. This allows development to add or delete haste after art has been commisioned.

Favored Original Races

New 03 Dec 2012 Asked by eldritchguy 10 Comments

What is the MTG original race more loved from the players? My vote goes to slivers, but eldrazi and hellions are cool too.

The most beloved original creature type? Slivers is a good guess. Atogs and Lhurgoyfs have some love. I’m not sure if you count the Phyrexians and Eldrazi as they aren’t creature types. The battle angel with Magic has a lot of influence on is very popular as is the goblin as comic relief type that Magic has pushed. Hellions, by the way, are not Magic specific. EDIT: Okay, Eldrazzi *are* a creature type.

Common Red Power Levels

New 27 Feb 2012 Asked by pseudolias 0 Comments

I read your newest article recently, & in it you said that there are few commons with more than 3; Blue gets 1 & green 1 or 2, if I recall. But I can can think of plenty of red commons with 4 or more power from recent sets. Perhaps you don't recognize the names (Since IIRC, you know most cards by their playtest names.) but Wall of Torches, Arc Runner, Flameborn Hellion, Bonebreaker Giant, Flameborn Viron, Nearhearth Stalker & many others come to mind. Why the omission, Maro?

Red can get one but doesn’t always.
