Legacy Trivia Gift

New 07 Oct 2023 Asked by astralwizard85 34 Comments

MaRo- it's my birthday and I hope to invoke the sacred rite of trivia. I'm the guy that begged and begged until we got Gerrard's Hourglass Pendant on a card, completing the Legacy in game. For my birthday, would you share something new to the community about the Legacy or one of its component pieces?

Gerard and the Weatherlight crew are delayed at the Stronghold. They get the signal from Ertai that the portal is about to close, so they use an item from the Legacy, the Windshaper to speed them through the portal. In the original version of the story, this causes them to crash in Mercadia which leads to the story there. Happy Birthday!

Gerrard Capashen Trivia

New 21 May 2023 Asked by redgryphon 37 Comments

Hi Mark, today is my birthday! Can I request trivia about Gerrard Capashen? He was my favorite character when I played in my high school's Magic club. Thanks!

The original inspiration for Gerrard was Han Solo. Michael Ryan, the co-creator of The Weatherlight Saga, is a huge Harrison Ford fan.Happy Birthday!

Weatherlight Crew

New 15 Aug 2022 Asked by derplingvonderp 31 Comments

"Original weatherlight crew" is that gerrard's crew that went to rath and mercadia, or is it the previous crew led by sisay?

That’s Gerrard’s crew.

Unrevealed Weatherlight Saga Trivia

New 06 Jul 2021 Asked by thejingleking 46 Comments

My birthday was the other day, and as I ask every year, could I get some previously unrevealed trivia about the original Weatherlight saga? (maybe something about Mercadia?)

In our version of the story, the Weatherlight crashes in Mercadia after shooting through the portal with the Windshaper. The leader of Mercadia (a character that didn’t happen in the printed version) becomes enamored with the ship, which he helps repair. He gets Gerrard and company to give up the ship by depriving medical care to Mirri, who is critically injured, unless they make the desk. The crew ends up invoking an ancient rite of competition to win it back. Happy Birthday!

Origin of Capashen Name

New 04 Feb 2021 Asked by dmmyccnt-blog-blog 88 Comments

Could you give us any trivia on the origin of the Capashen name?

I went and asked the source, the man who named Gerrard, my co-creator of The Weatherlight Saga - Michael Ryan. He said it was a riff on Capulet, Juliet’s family name in “Romeo & Juliet”.

Gerrard's Hourglass Pendant Inquiry

New 05 Jan 2021 Asked by astralwizard85 78 Comments

Mark - Gerrard's Hourglass Pendant is the last known piece of the Legacy to not receive a physical card printing. Will you champion this cause, so that we may finally assemble the Legacy Weapon and bring about the end of Yawgmoth's terror?

I’ll see what I can do.

Rofellos Queries and Birthday Wishes

New 31 Oct 2020 Asked by pierremtg 42 Comments

Hi Mark. Today is my fortieth birthday. Any chance we get to see Rofellos again? Or anything you can share about this marvellous elf?

When Michael and I created the Weatherlight Saga cast, we had a list of creature types we wanted to use. Elf was on the list, but we ended up going with a cat warrior for our green crew member. Later we realized, we needed a reason for why Gerrard left the ship and realized that it needed to be the death of someone close to him. That character, we said, could be the elf. And why not make him from Llanowar? Happy Birthday!

Hourglass Pendant of Gerrard Capashen

New 19 Sep 2020 Asked by astralwizard85 40 Comments

I would like to the rite of Birthday Trivia. You've spoken subtly about the Hourglass Pendant of Gerrard Capashen from time to time. Could you tell me what power this mystical artifact would have embodied?

In the original version of the Weatherlight Saga (aka as Michael and I envisioned it - not necessarily what’s true now) It let you eradicate one event from the past to change the world as though it never happened. Gerard knew it was destined to be important, but didn’t know what it actually did. Happy Birthday!

Trivia About Weatherlight Saga

New 04 Jul 2020 Asked by thejingleking 32 Comments

It's my birthday the other day, but I think my question got lost in the shuffle. As usual, could I get some previously unshared trivia about the original weatherlight saga? (For reference, you've shared that Volrath was going to be disguised as Tahngarth and that the hourglass pendant Gerrard gives to Pol Cordel had a giant role in the original third act of the story). Thank you!

In our version Crocax doesn’t betray the crew and kill Mirri. They both play important roles later in the story. Happy Belated Birthday!

Details on Gerrard's Hourglass Pendant

Now that you've shared a little more about the original Weatherlight Saga story - would you be willing to give us a little more info about Gerrard's Hourglass Pendant?

One of these days I ‘’ going to do a podcast on the original version of the Weatherlight Saga, the one Michael and I first pitched.

Legendary Character Cards

New 14 Feb 2020 Asked by filobel 44 Comments

Do you recall what the rationale was back in the day for printing legendary characters as generic characters? For instance, in Weatherlight, Maraxus got a legendary card, but Gerrard was printed on the generic "Master of Arms" card, and only got a legendary card in Apocalypse. What was the philosophy for printing characters at the time?

Master of Arms was a role that many people filled, including Gerrard. We put Gerrard in the art just to get more Gerrard art in the set. There was always plans to print a Gerrard card.

Death Triggers in Commander

New 24 Dec 2019 Asked by petruscaex 44 Comments

About Commander and death triggers, Mark, Gerrard and Child of Alara are two examples of really strong legends with death triggers that do see play in Commander. We're really used to play around the limitations of our commanders, so don't be afraid and trust our creativity : ) the colors that want those legends with death triggers will be capable of dealing with their commanders on the graveyard.

I’m telling you the rules are impacting what we’ll design. Gerard uses a wordy death trigger wording that we’re willing to use in a Commander specific product. Child of Alara probably would not have been made under the current rule set. As Head Designer, that restriction makes me sad as it keeps us from making some cool designs.

Orim 2.0 Possibility

New 18 Dec 2019 Asked by gruul-storyteller 39 Comments

So will we one day see a 2.0 version of Orim, Samite Healer like we did with Sisay, Weatherlight Captain or Gerrard, Weatherlight Hero?

Hopefully, one day.

Gerrard Commander Design

New 17 Aug 2019 Asked by gabrielmahaffey-blog 35 Comments

I really like the new Gerrard Commander. The only problem I have is that the trigger to return stuff isn't tied to him exiling himself. If you were to go back, would you do "when CARD NAME dies, you may exile him. If you do..."?

I believe the template that was used was so he properly works with the Comnander rules.

C19 Art Choices

New 12 Aug 2019 Asked by thewonderdoc-deactivated2020013 37 Comments

Mark I very much look forward to playing with some of the cards from C19. But one thing stuck out to me: Gerrard has the Weatherlight crew in the background of his art. Greven has Crovax and Volrath behind him. Why wasn't Vhati il-Dal also depicted behind Greven? He's one of the more memorable characters connected to him.

The artist picked the images he thought made the art look the best.

Combo Research Extent

New 12 Aug 2019 Asked by petruscaex 47 Comments

Mark, whenever I see a new card that allow some crazy combos/synergies, I feel like asking: how much research is conducted by the design teams in order to verify the possibilities of interactions with a new card? For example, the interaction between the RW Gerrard with Loyal Retainers/Adarkar Valkyrie/Sigil of the New Dawn and so on was entirely predicted?

Magic has a *lot* of cards. There is no way to explore every interaction.

Volrath Fan Reception

New 07 Aug 2019 Asked by dalenthas 39 Comments

I saw a lot of people complimenting Gerrard the other day, but I haven't seen any Volrath love yet. I'd like to say that I'm excited by the new Volrath and can't wait to put it in my Sisay Weatherlight crew deck.

I’ve gotten lots of Volrath love. I just post more on the weekends, such as when Gerard was first announced.

Artifact Set Design

New 05 Aug 2019 Asked by sliver-bloglord 139 Comments

Why are you willing to admit Gerrard was a bad design, but you seem unwilling to admit Artifact sets are bad design?

Mirrodin was a very clever design. It had a lot of developmental issues. Esper shard was a very cool design. Scars of Mirrodin was an evocative and intricate design. Infect was polarizing, but things that push boundaries often are and it had passionate fans. There were a few broken cards, but not my purview.Kaladesh is one of my favorite designs I’ve ever done. Players got to actually feel like an inventor. Again, there were plenty of development issues, but it captured the feel I was aiming for as a designer.I admit artifact blocks have a lot of play design concerns, and that’s why we’re starting to incorporate colored artifacts to help provide more tools for play design with balancing artifacts, but I’m quite proud of all four artifact designs I’ve worked on.

Master of Arms Errata

New 05 Aug 2019 Asked by studiodiemwing 39 Comments

Speaking of Gerrard, at the time Master of Arms was printed, tapped blockers didn't deal combat damage, correct? If so, how come Master of Arms hasn't been errated to function as he was intended? If not, what the heck does his ability meant to do?

We don’t errata cards to match how they interacted with the rules at the time they were printed.
