Rebound

Spree's Origin

New 09 Apr 2024 Asked by fanfactorpodcast 22 Comments

Was an early iteration of spree a modified version of rebound where you do an effect now and at the start of the next turn.

No, It was also a modal spell where you pay for each mode.

Mechanic References

New 04 Jan 2024 Asked by mournfulodysseus 36 Comments

Hi Mark! You've said that card text without relevance to the format its printed into ('can be your commander' on standard set planeswalkers, for example) is unlikely to appear to avoid confusion. We are now getting one off mechanic returns at high-rarity, like rebound on the blue Ojer which has relevance for standard and limited even though it isn't a set mechanic. However, The Mycotyrant references Saprolings despite them not being in the set- does this not fall more into the first category?

We treat references to creature types differently than we treat references to formats.

Is rebound now deciduous?

No.

Cipher Design Space

New 29 Sep 2023 Asked by tybonel13 33 Comments

Is Ciphers design space that much less than other instant or sorcery keywords? I feel like it could work with nearly any effect as just a bonus way to reuse the spell. A bit tougher to guarantee than rebound or buyback maybe, but I would've thought it'd be in a similar boat to those sorts of abilities.

It has to be an ability that’s meaningful post-combat. That shrinks thing’s significantly.

Ravnica Keyword Swap

New 26 Jul 2023 Asked by lurebound 61 Comments

If/When: A Ravnica set where some/all guilds use already existing keywords, but never related to the Guilds. Like Boros Battle Cry, Izzet Rebound or Simic Mutate?

If, but we’ve done that exercise.

White Cards with Rebound

New 20 Feb 2022 Asked by housefullofup 42 Comments

With white getting its once per turn draw, I understand divinations are out of the question. But what about an instant for 3W with draw a card, gain 2 life and rebound? Would that be in pie, a bend or a break?

I think a rebound “draw a card” could be done in white.

Evaluation of Retrace and Rebound

New 28 Apr 2021 Asked by chrisgodinho 37 Comments

Were Retrace and Rebound considered for Strixhaven?

Rebound was. I don’t remember talking about Retrace.

Impulsive Draw Timing

New 23 Nov 2019 Asked by rhonas-the-indomitable-blog 27 Comments

When designing Khans of Tarkir, did you deliberately avoid impulsive draw for red since it is a nonbo with Rebound?

I don’t think we did impulsive draw yet as of Khans of Tarkir.

Returning Spells Mechanic

New 17 Aug 2019 Asked by drewblive380 31 Comments

Considering this has become a topic, wouldn't returning a spell to original location be mechanically advantageous in the cases of suspend, rebound, madness, or cascade. Because they're all technically cast from exile or the library. Also would this be enough to justify a card getting printed with counter to original zone?

It’s just very narrow. Maybe in a set where it has larger ramifications.

Oujtai Clan Mechanic

New 11 Jul 2019 Asked by terabyte108 54 Comments

Why was Rebound the mechanic for the Oujtai clan in a flavor sense?

They’re really into basketball. : )

Buyback vs Rebound

New 10 Dec 2018 Asked by tbjanowski 28 Comments

Does buyback have a chance at returning or does rebound fill that role better?

Rebound has a much better chance of return than buyback.

Jumpstart vs Rebound

New 08 Dec 2018 Asked by kogar15 22 Comments

Just listened to the podcast on izzet and while i think jumpstart is a great fit did r&d ever consider rebound? It seems like a natural connection for the "spells matter" guild theme as well as being flavorful. And as jeskai showed in khans it wouldve made a decent bridge between izzet and boros. Though i while admit it wouldn't have played as closely with dimir, when it came to surveil and jumpstart. Rebound would fit great with the card advantage route that dimir and izzet share.

We talked about rebound. It wasn’t as synergistic as we wanted.

Keywords vs. Ability Words

New 08 Sep 2018 Asked by mynameisfourteen 28 Comments

Transform and Rebound are both Keywords, not Ability Words. No Planeswalker has yet been printed with an Ability Word.

Fair point. I misread the question as caring about things specific to the set, so that mistake is on me. You can’t mechanically care about ability words, but a planeswalker could have an ability that’s labeled elsewhere in the set as an ability word.

Planeswalkers and Ability Words

New 08 Sep 2018 Asked by doopboopdoop 44 Comments

Can an ability word appear on a planeswalker?

It can and it has. A few examples: Garruk and Arlin had Transform. Narset had Rebound.

Memory Abilities Caution

New 12 Aug 2017 Asked by admiraldread 22 Comments

Regarding you saying you disliking memory related abilities, Does this mean that we aren't very likely to see rebound much?

I didn’t say all memory is off the table, just we have to be careful.

Embalm Mechanic Nuance

New 28 Mar 2017 Asked by royinversezx 35 Comments

Why doesnt embalm work like persist/undying? Just bring the creature back with an embalm counter and make the embalm counter have the exile part.

The same reason Flashback isn’t just Rebound. Because the payment is an important part of the cost.

Flickering Spell Complexity

New 23 Dec 2016 Asked by sableargyle 17 Comments

"Flickering spells would not be worth the confusion and rules issues." Isn't that just rebound though?

Does the original spell resolve? There’s no clear intuitive answer.

Narset's Unique Ability

Where does Narset Transcendent have a non-loyalty ability?

She uses a keyword mechanic (Rebound).

Rebound Mechanic

New 25 Jun 2016 Asked by doopboopdoop 34 Comments

Did rebound in Tarkir having a positive response open the idea of more faction mechanics not all being new?

We’re definitely open to the idea.

Keywords as Names

New 24 Jun 2016 Asked by sirblackaxe 27 Comments

Here are some keywords and ability words that are also card names: Vigilance, Lifelink, Exile, Fear, Overload, Rally, Rebound, Channel, Unearth, Provoke, Vanishing, and Recover. I'm sure there are more, too.
