Formidable

Favorite Card Revelation

New 14 Feb 2023 Asked by gevth 60 Comments

I asked ChatGPT “what is Mark Rosewater’s favourite card he designed?”. You’ll need to train it a little more before it can take over Blogatog.

Mark Rosewater, the head designer for the trading card game Magic: The Gathering, has designed many cards over the years, and he has mentioned several as his favorites. One card that he has specifically mentioned as his favorite design is "Psychatog."

"Psychatog" is a blue/black creature card that was first printed in the Torment expansion set in 2002. It has a unique ability that allows its controller to discard cards from their hand to increase its power and toughness, making it a formidable threat on the battlefield. The card has been a favorite of many players over the years due to its power and versatility.

Rosewater has stated that he loves "Psychatog" because it is a great example of a card that combines different elements of the game in a creative way. He enjoys the challenge of designing cards that are both mechanically interesting and flavorful, and he feels that "Psychatog" is a perfect example of a card that succeeds on both levels.

I didn’t know when I produced all my writing that I was helping train my successor. : )EDIT: Also, while I did design Psychatog and generally like its design, it is not my favorite card I designed. That’s Doubling Season.

Formidable Comeback in Tarkir

New 11 May 2021 Asked by popcornbunni 87 Comments

I'm not sure how popular Formidable was in Tarkir, but I hope it comes back some time. It does a nice job bridging the cap between Red-Green's "go tall" and red-white's "go wide."

Who here would like to see Formidable return?

Tarkir Mana Sinks

New 07 Apr 2015 Asked by jwiley129 37 Comments

I was looking at Dragons of Tarkir, and I asked myself where all the mana sinks were. Then I realized that they were hidden in the form of Dash, Formidable, and Megamorph. Very tricky Mr. Rosewater

Tarkir Mechanics Synergy

I like how the Tarkir mechanics all kinda work with each other. Exploit gives you Delve fuel. Rebound doubles the Prowess triggers. Casting a card for a dash cost means you'll likely be attacking, which sets up the requirements for Raid. Then the Abazan and Temur is were it falls apart. Outlast kinda lets you control how you bolster. Ferocious and Formidable really are the same thing, different requirements.

Bolster puts +1/+1 counters on you creatures (as does outlast) and both are rewarded by +1/+1 enablers (many of which are outlast creatures).Ferocious and Formidable require the same dedication to creatures and thus can go in the same deck.

Enjoyable Prerelease Experience

New 21 Mar 2015 Asked by karador 30 Comments

I won today's prerelease, which felt awesome. I went with Atarka, because I thought that just solid beatdown was the way to go in this new unknown environment, and Formidable played great. I love mechanics where you have to track something you usually do not track. Also, the format felt a lot less bomb-oriented than I feared it would, and while I did open Atarka, I won many games without her. It felt fresh and different and really like a "new version of Tarkir" :-)

Yes, the challenge of Dragons of Tarkir limited was making the dragons felt without every game ending with “well, they drew their dragon.” I’m glad you had a great time.

Formidable Naming Confusion

Was Formidable ever known as "Double Ferocious" ?

That implies you need two 4-power creatures.

Gods' Design Acclaim

New 07 Jun 2014 Asked by mrtitanic 40 Comments

Although I loved Theros overall - I want to specifically say the gods are very impressive design all around. Very well rounded cards. Devotion shaped Standard, they're the Commanders of many EDH decks including all of mine, even Modern loves several of them. The Theros gods aren't Eldrazi level so they're still fun to play against, but they're quite formidable all the same. Thassa is just such brilliant design. Love her. The scry at upkeep has so much flavor in a Blue sea goddess.

I’m pretty happy with how the gods ended up.
