Narset Character Trivia

New 18 Dec 2022 Asked by aork14 39 Comments

Hello Mark! For my birthday, I was wondering if you had any cool trivia about my favorite color combination (Jeskai), my favorite character (Narset), or my favorite card (Desperate Ravings)

Narset came about because we liked the idea of a character that in one timeline was a legendary creature of great renown, and in the other, a planeswalker. Happy Birthday!

Possibility of Renown Return

New 10 Jul 2022 Asked by willofwinds-blog 28 Comments

What's the over-under on Renown coming back? I thought it was a neat little mechanic, and I feel like the only problem with it is +1/+1 counters being stricter in any sets with them.

I think Renown will return one day.

Specific Naming Request

May I request more cards that refer to other cards by name, like Renowned Weaponsmith and Sift Through Sands?

You may.

Mechanics Return Potential

New 21 Aug 2020 Asked by polluxr 59 Comments

I'm surprised Renown hasn't been used again and I loved the design space of creatures becoming more powerful once they connect. Same goes for spell mastery (specially with that Chandra shock that would turn into a bolt and the 3 mana burn spell that got uncounterable). Were those mechanics badly received or there simply hasn't come the time for them?

Both mechanics were received well enough to return one day.

Consideration of Unique Mechanics

New 22 Feb 2020 Asked by mmonkeyfeet 24 Comments

has there ever been consideration for putting a unique set mechanic that fits a specific tribe on on all planes on lord effects? An example would be making a lord who grants Renown to all Knights?

If it’s not an evergreen mechanic, it can’t be something we use on all planes.

Forward-Calling Cards

New 26 Jan 2020 Asked by mgmegadog 34 Comments

I've realized that one of the few things I am going to miss about the existence of blocks is the "cards that call forward specific card names that will later on be in the same limited environment" thing: Renowned Weaponsmith, Godpharaoh's Gift, Shield of Kaldra and the like. Will there ever be a way for things like this to show up again in some form or other?

We can still make call-forwards, but they won’t be in the same limited environment.

Inter-Set Card References

New 19 Sep 2019 Asked by xalucard 48 Comments

Hi Mark! Is it possible for cards printed in different sets to reference each other the way bogbrew witch, the cauldron, and the newt do? Like print card A in set 1, card B in set 2, and then card C in set 3 and have C directly reference cards named A and B?

We’ve done it before. For example Renowned Weaponsmith was in Fates Refirged while the two caddscit referred to were in in Khans of Tarkir and Dragons of Tarkir.

Apprentice Wizard and Blue

New 29 Oct 2017 Asked by ravenknightvincent 31 Comments

I read in MtG Wiki that Apprentice Wizard is a color pie break even though we have blue mana production as close as Fate Reforged (Renowned Weaponsmith). Is this true?

No. Blue is allowed access to colorless mana. It’s most often tied to artifact production.

Foreshadow Cards Opinion

New 14 Feb 2017 Asked by todoesgraciosocuandolohacehitler 30 Comments

Hello, Mark! RE: Foreshadow cards. I love them, but I think something like Dark Intimations is a little too on the nose. I prefer it when we don't know what the card is referring to, like with Renowned Weaponsmith or the Kaldra equipments, or when it's a vague reference that only "clicks" retroactively. Thanks!

Not everything need be subtle.

+1/+1 Counters Usage

New 25 Oct 2016 Asked by superfantasticpiratecollection 50 Comments

Could we have a set where giving +1/+1 and/or -1/-1 counters isn't part of a mechanic (fabricate, outlast, renown, support, etc....)?

You mean like the set Shadows over Innistrad? : )

Double-Faced Cards

New 22 Nov 2015 Asked by aaronlovesmtg 65 Comments

If double faced cards didn't have the financial limitation... for mechanics like Monsterous or Renown would you prefer to use DFC's or still use +1/+1 counters?

The biggest discovery of Innistrad design was how deep the design space is on double-faced cards. If the financial and logistical issues went away, I believe *every* set would use double-faced cards.
