Necrodominance Hand Size Reasoning

New 04 Jun 2024 Asked by sniffnoy 24 Comments

Why does Necrodominance set maximum hand size by 5 (setting it to a specific value) rather than decreasing it by 2 (like Thought Nibbler or Locust Miser)?

Different cards will sometimes approach issues in different ways.

Digital Mechanics Adaptation

New 21 Mar 2023 Asked by heavenlyevan 97 Comments

Are there effects that Magic used to do that it avoids doing because of digital? One example I was thinking of was something like Mindslaver effects, which seem like a monumental task for digital clients.

Mana Cost Adjustments

New 18 Aug 2022 Asked by mtgedhiction 46 Comments

Hey simple question that possibly needs a complicated answer, what is the need for a mechanically identical card, but with a lower mana cost? I.e Counterspell and Cancel or Sunbond and Light of Promise?

Effects don’t always have to be at the same power level. We tend to push cards when they are core to a set’s identity and pull back when they’re not.

Persian/Arabic Planes: Rabiah

New 22 Feb 2022 Asked by arcanistlupus 120 Comments

Regarding Rabiah, here's what I (and I suspect others) want to see: I want to see a Persian/Arabic plane. It does not need any connection to the original Arabian Nights set or story (if there was one), but I would like it to be called Rabiah. And maybe have some clever Time Spiral style call backs (like how Fool's Demise was a reference to False Demise)

Do others agree with this sentiment?

Sharing a Beloved Story

New 04 Feb 2022 Asked by raytyger 81 Comments

Hi Mark, it's my birthday. Well, it isn't particularly going well, so I'd like to ask for a story you find dear to share. Thanks for everything.

One day many years ago, I had a birthday party and invited Matt Cavotta and family. I do a birthday party every year at a seafood restaurant as I’ve had Alaskan crab legs for my birthday since I was a kid. Presents are optional.Below is the gift Matt brought me that sits in my den and I see everyday. It’s one of my favorite birthday gifts I have ever received.
For those that don’t recognize it, it is the original art for Mise which appeared on the booster pack of Unhinged (and was in the set). It’s framed with a signed artist proof and a “Happy Birthday” greeting.I hope the rest of your birthday goes better.Happy Birthday!

Reviving Old Magic Slang

New 11 Dec 2021 Asked by spwndlove 68 Comments

What's a old Magic slang word or phrase (like mill, "go face", fire breathing, etc) that people don't say anymore but you wish would come back?

I kind of miss “mise”. : )

White's Sacrifice Mechanic

New 16 Jul 2021 Asked by hedronalignment 36 Comments

RE: White Sacrifice. White has several cards that can make a player sacrifice an attacking creature, and a couple boardwipes have been released that make players sacrifice creatures conditionally. Are Promise of Loyalty, Single Combat, Slaughter the Strong, and Tragic Arrogance bends or breaks?

White does have a little sacrifice, but all players sacrifice all their creatures feels black not white.

Rarity Upgrades

New 08 May 2020 Asked by riverofmolecules 34 Comments

When I look back at the sets when I started playing (around Odyssey) and I think about sets now: It feels like there used to be more vertical cycles (Thought Nibbler/Eater/Devourer) or just cards that were just uncommon upgrades of common cards (Gnat/Locust Miser). Is this my perception or does WotC do fewer obvious rarity upgrades now? I have my thoughts why WotC would do it less, but could you talk about this briefly?

We do less vertical cycles as they structurally do a lot less work than the vertical ones.

Black Enchantment Removal Experimentation

New 30 Mar 2020 Asked by myfavoriteflavorisblue 32 Comments

In our post Mire in Misery black can kind of touch enchantments world, could we see a black destroy target enchantment an opponent controls? That way black can't break their demonic contracts but still gets to hit stuff.

R&D is experimenting with black enchantment removal. You’ll see more of that experimentation in upcoming sets.

Theros Card Potential

New 02 Jan 2020 Asked by stankmaster5000 35 Comments

Theros would be a great place for a black card like Mire in Misery, or a black card like it, to get into standard. Right?

It would be. : )

Favorite Artist

New 28 Nov 2019 Asked by puppybytes 59 Comments

Oh hi mark, I wanted to ask: what's your favourite magic: the gathering artist? I promise I won't tell

Only one of them gave me their art (for Mise) as a gift, so I pick Matt Cavotta. He’s also the only artist (excluding playtest cards) to carpool with me on my podcast.

White's New Minor Thing

New 08 Sep 2019 Asked by harpsichord5925-blog 26 Comments

Is white's minor new thing going to be similar to mire in misery giving black enchantment removal, where it gets to do something that other colors can do but not as efficient?

It’s nowhere as major as that.

Black Enchantment Removal Flavor

New 09 Aug 2019 Asked by mackeytwins 61 Comments

I'm not getting the flavor of Mire in Misery. Enchantments drowning in a swamp? Unlike say Gate to Phyrexian (creature grabs artifact and jumps through gate to the doom of both). I don't oppose giving black enchantment removal, but could it be flavorful?

It’s making players sad enough that they’re destroying their own things.

Black Enchantment Removal

New 08 Aug 2019 Asked by brotein-manganiello 133 Comments

Just saw Mire in Misery, this is the black enchantment removal you've been hinting at right? What is the extent of enchantment removal in black? Is it just edicts?

Here’s what we’re up to. We realized that three different colors could get rid of artifacts (white, red, and green), but only two could get rid of enchantments (white and green). Black seemed like the right choice as it had two permanent types it couldn’t remove. Now, red has trouble with enchantments and black has trouble with artifacts. Our constraints for black were as follows. We definitely want black to be third in efficiency behind white and green. We also didn’t want black to be able to destroy its own enchantments as we like the Deal with the Devil enchantments in black (this was the major reason black hasn’t had enchantment removal). With those constraints, we’ve started designing cards. Our plan is to roll them out slowly, so I don’t believe Throne of Eldraine has one. You will see more though, just slowly.

Finale of Promise Correction

New 22 Apr 2019 Asked by kolonelnick 33 Comments

In your recent article "war games" you said that finale of promise shows nicol bolas casting the elder spell, while it is clearly niv-mizzet on the artwork, bolas is nowhere to be seen, or am I missing something?

It’s been corrected in the article.

Golden Demise Story Role

Golden Demise didn't happen in the actual story. It was a false memory.

Wasn’t the false memory part of the story?

Spike's Card Fetching

New 18 Nov 2017 Asked by mydrel-kyenshi 31 Comments

I can get Emrakul, the Promised End or Reflector Mage with Spike, right? Or do the cards I fetch have to be cards on a current active banlist?

Ever been banned or restricted not just currently.

Unstable Creative Direction

New 26 Oct 2017 Asked by pallpointben 40 Comments

I'm excited about the cohesive creative for Unstable, but I'm worried that it won't leave much room for fourth wall-breaking classics like Look at Me, I'm the DCI; Timmy, Power Gamer; Richard Garfield, PhD; or even Mise. Each of these examples breaks the fourth wall to a varying extent- are we going to get to see the full range? Will we see them in the same quantities as previous Unsets?

There are still some fourth-wall breaking cards, but less than previous Un-sets because we wanted to bring a cohesive world to the set. One of the things we always try to do in Un-sets is make use of modern technology including creative elements.

Hour of Promise Imagery

New 28 Jun 2017 Asked by manaleaker-blog-deactivated2023 66 Comments

Why does the card Hour of Promise (from HOU) depict a blue/red god that makes black tokens, on a green card?

The card represents the spread of the desert now that the hekma, the protective barrier, has fallen (destroyed by the locusts). The wild black Zombies show up because the barrier isn’t there to keep them out.
