Guile

Suitability of 'Eriette, the Beguiler'

New 21 Apr 2024 Asked by mjawadb 29 Comments

so I drafted "Eriette, the Beguiler" and then discovered that there are 3 auras in the set, 1 red, 1 green (she is esper colored) and the final aura which is blue, disables the target completely which conflicts with her ability's goal. Was this a mistake of having too many things trying to be fit into the set? or was she never designed to be drafted?

Rares and mythic rares are more focused on constructed formats. It’s nice when they can work for limited, but it’s not a requirement.

Designing Low-Value Cards

New 22 Apr 2022 Asked by lavilledieu 72 Comments

What is the idea behind designing cards that are seemingly terrible in both limited and constructed? For example, I cannot imagine Psionic Snoop getting played unless you drafted really bad or you cannot evaluate cards. From VOW, Nebelgast Beguiler is another example. Is designing such cards a way to balance limited? Or do you really believe such cards will see meaningful play?

Thanks to digital, we can now track how often specific cards get played. The interesting thing about the data is everything gets played, more than we even thought it would. Don’t assume every player has your knowledge or priorities.

Guile's Mana Cost Decision

New 02 Mar 2022 Asked by suigenyukiouji 30 Comments

For the Street Fighter UB Secret Lair, was it ever considered to give Guile the old RWU mana cost order?

No, we like consistency of the mana costs. (And yes, I understand the irony as we changed the three colors mana costs as of Khans of Tarkir.)

Color Pie Mechanics Adjustments

Would you say Mirri's Guile is a break for green to scry, or was that before the color pie?

Green used to have library adjusting/filtering that is no longer in green’s part of the pie.

Ranger's Guile Mechanic

Was Ranger's Guile ("Target creature you control gets +1/+1 and gains hexproof...") given the "you control" restriction to prevent the misunderstandings that would arise when using it on your opponent's creatures?

That and we didn’t want it to be a counterspell against positive spells and effects that the opponent wanted to use on his or her own creatures. EDIT: Yeah, I was thinking of shroud.

Printing Rarity Equality

New 13 May 2012 Asked by jamkot-deactivated20160828 0 Comments

In my short time spending lots of money on magic cards I've become curious about rarities and how many of each cards are printed. Since I've started collecting I've gotten 25 mythic rares, three of which are Beguiler of Wills (one foil) but have no other doubles of Mythic. Which led me to this question, are all cards of a particular rarity printed evenly or are there certain cards printed more frequently?

All cards of the same rarity appear on their respective sheets the same number of times. What this means is if you open enough packs, you will get the same number on average of each card of the same rarity.
