Creature Type Uniqueness

New 04 Apr 2024 Asked by bcrazy713 111 Comments

Hey Mark, on the topic of players being worried about creature types losing their distinctiveness by being added in with the broader type rather than a specific race (ex. Viashino(Lizard) or Naga(Snake)), I looked to see how many are already currently templated this way and there are ALOT more than I realized.Archaic (Avatar), Aven (Bird), Leonin (Cat), Malamet (Cat), Nishoba (Cat Beast), Daemogoth (Demon), Ainok (Dog), Flamekin (Elemental), Loxodon (Elephant), Mycoid (Fungus), Thallid (Fungus), Akki (Goblin), Boggart (Goblin), Mogg (Goblin), Redcaps (Goblin), Eumidian (Insect), Kraul (Insect), Nantuko (Insect), Khenra (Jackal), Kitsune (Fox), Merrow (Merfolk), Selkie (Merfolk), Triton (Merfolk), Onakke (Ogre), Caryatid (Plant), Nezume (Rat), Rhox (Rhino), Amphin (Salamander), Orochi (Snake), Kami (Spirit), Drogskol (Spirit), Eidolon (Spirit), Ent (LoTR) (Treefolk), Trow (Troll), Kappa (Turtle), Liche (Zombie), Eternal (Zombie), Draugr (Zombie), Nim (Zombie), Skaab (Zombie)

Yep. Most of the ones that didn’t do it entered the game before we made this the default.

Returning Thallid Mechanic?

Hey Mark, will we see a return of the thallid mechanic (with spore counters) or is it just too slow for modern day magic?

It’s a bit slow.

Sporoloth Ancient in Fungus Deck

New 27 Aug 2020 Asked by parc2 39 Comments

Hi, just wanted to say SPOROLOTH ANCIENT is like a key card in my fungus deck. (Looks like you already saw it works on it's own, so I won't mention that). There are a few cards that get spore counters, but don't have the ability to make saprolings, which this provided. And it reduces the ones that do from a saproling every 3 turns to two. A nice combo with Sporesower Thallid, your fungi make saprolings every turn! This card is a must and top their fungi and fun guy

Sometimes you just miss something when reading cards. A lot of its fans have written into me.

Birthweek Trivia: Thallids

New 25 Jul 2020 Asked by gonzoron 44 Comments

May I have birthweek trivia on my favorite creature type: thallids?

Part of my love for creature tokens comes from Thallids. When Fallen Empires came out, I built a Thallid deck and loved it. It’s not crazy to say that Magic’s proliferation of creature tokens over the years owes a lot Thallid.Happy Birthday!

Thallid Deck Memories

New 26 May 2018 Asked by spookiestmimikyu 24 Comments

Happy Birthday MaRo! Here's some trivia: I started playing when my dad bought me the future sight thallid deck while he was picking up comic books, and I've loved those wonderful mushroom pals ever since! (I was very happy when slimefoot got spoiled, and then even moreso when they got a story :D )

Could a Thallid hold a spark?

It’s an artificially created creature, so no, not naturally.

Black Toughness Traits

New 01 May 2018 Asked by subbak 54 Comments

Does black no longer have "defensive" P/T combinations with a higher toughness than power? In Dominaria there is only one common black creature (Calico Skin-Witch) and one uncommon (Thallid Soothsayer) with such stats. Also you mentioned that Yargle's P/T is in color-pie for black, which I thought it was no longer really now (to make red creatures and black creatures more different).

Black still gets high toughness. Black’s P/T identity has been the topic of a Color Pie Council meeting. We haven’t reached an outcome yet.

Creature Type Identity

New 25 Mar 2018 Asked by centurosplaneswalker 48 Comments

"If creatures get too narrowly defined mechanically, it makes it hard for us to reuse them." But it feels like moving away from having a definitive identity makes a lot of creature types blander. And even if Fungus doesn't immediately mean "Spore Counters", Thallid should IMO.

Here’s the issue. Players, in general, like when we return to creature types to help create a large enough number to build around. But if they’re too narrow in the mechanical space, it makes them harder to return to and increase the volume. The goal is to find a balance where they have a feel without making their future designs too restrictive. Goblins, for example, have an identity without having to all have the same mechanical through line.

It's my birthday. Any chance I can have some Thallid trivia?

Fallen Empires was the first real tribal set and the Thallids were the first tribal tokens. It also was the introduction of Saprolings, one of the unique Magic creature types. Happy Birthday! P.S. One of my favorite nicknames is for the card Thorn Thallid. It’s known as Thallid Shooter.

I know you hate hornet sting, but how do you feel about other green direct damage? Like Thorn Thallid?

My dislike is of green direct damage not Hornet Sting in particular. Well, I probably hate Hornet Sting a little more as I think it might have been made to spite me.

I’m probably having as little too much fun with this. : )

Color Pie Variations

New 08 Feb 2012 Asked by eternalcheechako 3 Comments

Vitaspore Thallid is a green common that grants haste, even though haste is only tirtiarily in green. Why was that ok? I'm a big fan of the card because there are so few ways for green to pull that off.

Vitaspore Thallid was from the set Planar Chaos where we played around with an alternative reality where the color pie had been set up differently. In that world, haste was primary in green. Planar Chaos is the worst possible set to use as precedence for anything color pie related.
