How come hornet queen doesn’t have the creature type hornet?

Because we use Insect as a larger grouping.

Hornet Sting's Conditions

Would Hornet Sting still be a break if it said: "Target creature you control deals 1 damage to any target."

Yes. It would need to hit just creatures.

Hornet Queen Reprints

New 20 Mar 2024 Asked by quantext 48 Comments

If Hornet Queen is a color pie break, why is it reprinted so often in commander pre-constructed decks?

Because it’s popular and it’s not introducing it to a format that doesn’t yet have it.

1000 Bee Stings Theme

New 11 Jan 2024 Asked by nothingbutland-blog 26 Comments

I really hope the Green card you can have as many of it named 1000 Bee Stings. Lol. With a picture of a animated bannana being attacked by a swarm of Killer Bees.

It is not banana or bee/hornet themed.

Hornet Queen Color

New 25 Sep 2023 Asked by mythial-blog 34 Comments

Famously (or infamously), Hornet Queen is considered a Colour Pie Break in Green. Would adding Black to its colour identity fix this, is this perhaps the direction for bees going forward?

Hornet Queen could be black.

Hornet Queen Break Criteria

New 07 Sep 2023 Asked by seventhousand7 31 Comments

Is Hornet Queen only a break because it makes a bunch of small flier tokens? Green seems to be allowed to get flying on high MV rare creatures, like on the occasional green dragon.

Hornet Queen’s issue is that it’s too efficient in both creating fliers and in shutting down the opponent’s fliers with your own fliers.

Token Attribute Consistency

New 25 Jul 2023 Asked by nightfiremelody 40 Comments

RE: Previous ask regarding token abilities and color. Unfortunately, you did not address the question. If a token is generated by a card of a different color, can it have abilities that ARE in-pie for the card that generated it, but NOT in-pie for the color of the token itself. The original example I gave was if Hornet Queen itself were Black, but the tokens were still mono-Green. Another example might be a Red card that generates mono-Blue tokens with haste.

If a black card makes a token, of any color, it has to have abilities that black can have.

Token Abilities and Color

New 25 Jul 2023 Asked by nightfiremelody 33 Comments

Can tokens have abilities that are out-of-pie for the token's color if the token itself is generated by a card of a color that could have the ability? For example, if Hornet Queen were a black card, could the tokens it generated still be mono-green?

Cards can generate tokens of other colors, but that token must mechanically be something the original color can produce.

Corrections on Article

Just FYI, In your A to Z article for Hornet Sting you refer to Magic 2021 meaning Magic 2011.

Thanks. It’s been fixed.

Overlay Name Reuse Possibility

New 01 Nov 2021 Asked by simicmimic 30 Comments

Could an overlay card name be the same as another regular card, e.g., a reprinted Ant Queen with the overlay name Hornet Queen?

I do not believe we’d use a name on an existing Magic card as an overlay name.

March of the Color Break

New 25 Oct 2021 Asked by myheartgoesoontz 103 Comments

Secret Lair: MaRo's Bane - Each card is a color pie break, pointed at a character who looks suspiciously like everyone's favorite head designer. Come see MaRo getting Chaos Warped, Stung by Hornets, Psionic Blasted, and more! Make it a charity Secret Lair as a sort of "dunk tank" exercise.

A cute execution of something we should never do. : )

Rejected Hate for Certain Cards

Leeches and Hornet Sting? What cards are those?

Feasibility of Colorshifted Theme

New 27 Dec 2020 Asked by cannotwynn 83 Comments

Do you think it’s possible and worthwhile to, **without** bending or breaking the pie like Planar Chaos, have a “colorshifted” theme in a set? I’m picturing things like the GDS3 “Serra Angel” in BG, a monoblack Hornet Queen, or monocolored versions of some of the appropriate-but-unique hybrid cards.

It is possible.

Combining Hornet Queen Color Combinations

Green/white is a possibility. Green/blue is a little more of a flavor stretch.

Remaking Hornet Queen

If you remade Hornet Queen with the exact same cmc and abilities, what colours would it be?

Either monoblack or black/green, most likely.
