Scavenge

Dream Job

New 25 Jul 2024 Asked by fanfactorpodcast 11 Comments

I had a Maro dream once. You'd hire me on if I completed a scavenger hunt quest around Seattle. I had to find and take pictures of various land marks such as Pike Place but it was closed that day. Then somehow we rode a mono rail over the bay and you gave me until the end of the ride to design 5 Commons for an upcoming set, but your critique was I designed rares. :(

Thanks for sharing.

Possibility of Off-Battlefield Stat Buffs

New 06 Jun 2024 Asked by meu133 12 Comments

Hi Mark, I opened a creature with Scavenge and it made me think, could the rules handle stat buffs and ability granting to creatures outside the battlefield? (to increase how much they scavenge for or how big Coram gets) Would there be enough design space for it?

My gut is the rules could do it if we wanted to, but there isn’t a lot of synergy/design space, so there’s not a great reason to do it.

Creature Types

New 22 Nov 2023 Asked by nabistay 48 Comments

Why can't the word 'golgari' be a class or creature type so typal could work that way? "Golgari creatures have scavenge {b}{g}", "kindred Sorcery - Golgari"?

1) It’s just not how we use creature types. 2) It would set a bad precedent. 3) I don’t think there is enough room to fit it on all the relevant typelines.4) Kindred is not something we use much.

Favorite Guild Mechanics

What are your favourite guild mechanics for each guild of Ravnica? Do you think they're also the ones most likely to be brought back?

Caverns Mechanics Synergy

New 24 Oct 2023 Asked by jimharbor 35 Comments

Caverns of Ixalan has Craft a "Graveyard as a resource" mechanic like Flashback & Scavenge and Descend, a "graveyard as a measure" mechanic like threshold and undergrowth. From what I can tell a graveyard had set has always been built around one or the other because the themes clash. Why does Caverns mix the two? Thanks for answering our questions, sir.

Both mechanics work with things that fill your graveyard, so there is some synergy, even if there’s also some tension.

Keyword Ability Limitation

New 23 Aug 2023 Asked by blind42-blog 76 Comments

Would it not be better for creatures like odric (and more recently, urborg scavengers) to just bestow "all abilities" rather than rattling off a list of inconsistent and ever changing abilities? Are there too many interactions that could break the game?

Those cards list abilities because the black border rules can’t handle saying “all abilities” or even “all keyword abilities”.

Plural Creatures Rule

New 22 Jul 2023 Asked by nightfiremelody 41 Comments

Hi Mark. What is WotC's current position on printing "plural" creatures (i.e. a single card depicting and naming multiple creatures) such as Midnight Scavengers?

It’s something we do. The only rule is the creature type is always singular. That wasn’t true in early Magic.

French Vanilla Matters?

Would you say that cards like Odric and Urborg Scavengers qualify as French Vanilla Matters??

No, they’re anti-synergistic with vanilla creatures.

Scavenger Hunt Rules

New 03 Dec 2022 Asked by styx2319 19 Comments

Un-rules question. On one version of Scavenger Hunt, it asks for a "humanoid animal or alien". Would Infinity Elemental count (or any humanoid shaped elemental for that matter?)

Sure.

Creature Classification

New 11 Oct 2022 Asked by kidcincinnati 24 Comments

There was an un-debate; for Scavenger Hunt, one of the items you can wind up searching for is a "four-legged creature". My opponent went searching, and grabbed Complaints Clerk. I objected on the grounds this was clearly a humanoid sloth using what appeared to me to be distinctly functioning as arms and legs, ergo not four legged. My opponent countered that it was a sloth, sloths are four-legged, therefore this was a four-legged creature. The store owner felt yes, judge felt no. Who was closest?

Humanoid animals have two arms and two legs, not four legs. A normal sloth would have four legs.

My copy of the Attraction card "Scavenger Hunt" was missing the words "at random." Could you let the appropriate people know?

Which version was it?

Unfinity Preparation

New 28 Sep 2022 Asked by untapupkeepdrawpact 75 Comments

FYI the Spikes are bringing to Unfinity: a tophat, glasses, WUBRG top, pen & paper, lotsa fuzzy dice, tape measure, timer, granola bars, English dictionary, smartphone, Antiquities/Eldraine booster packs, a like-minded buddy, prosthetic 3rd arm with flipping skills, inconspicuous clown robot tokens, jokebook, box of tchotchkes, copious MTG merch, #GuessThatMagicCard sent to mom, 10 Ninja's Kunai cards, Scavenger Hunt basic lands, 5 cards stolen from Johnny (by same artist), and an Ikea showcase.

Nice list. Some notes:• The dice have to be real dice, both for rolling and stacking.• The smartphone will have a timer. • The prosthetic arm won’t work for A Real Handful. • The Clown Robot tokens have to be the official ones. • The person guessing #GuessThatMagicCard can’t be coached. : )

Acorn Territory and Buff Card

New 06 Jul 2022 Asked by ginkasai 33 Comments

If or when, a card that buffs creatures in all zones? Im not sure what support that effect would need, but it would be cool with mechanics like scavenge.

That sounds like acorn territory.

New Mechanic Similar to Scavenge

New 06 Jun 2021 Asked by obazervazi 35 Comments

Could we ever get a new mechanic that works like Scavenge, but also uses ability counters?

Possibly.

Scavenge Counter Abilities

New 30 Oct 2020 Asked by obazervazi 54 Comments

Scavenge originally granted abilities in addition to counters in design, right? Now that ability counters are a thing, could we see a riff on Scavenge that uses them?

If the two things show up in the same set.

Scavenge and Ability Counters

New 08 May 2020 Asked by obazervazi 29 Comments

Could we ever get a tweak of scavenge that also uses ability counters?

They’d have to overlap in a set for that to even be a possibility.

Guild Mechanic Choices

New 11 Sep 2018 Asked by readerat2046 39 Comments

Did you ever consider bringing back a mechanic for GRN that had not previously been a guild mechanic (Like battle cry for the Boros, or infect for the Golgari)? Is there any particular reason Selesnya was the only guild not to get a new mechanic? Did you ever consider bringing back battalion, or scavenge, or overload?

We had a list for every guild what we could bring back. We tested Splice (onto instant and sorcery) for Izzet.

Returning Guild Mechanics

New 04 Sep 2018 Asked by medicalplagues 50 Comments

Since we're returning to Ravnica once again, I have a high guess, we'll never see Dredge again according to the Storm Scale. But that makes me wonder if scavenge, overload, and other guild functions will return.

Convoke’s back. : )

Design Difficulty Insight

New 20 Feb 2018 Asked by kobayashicircle-deactivated2019 26 Comments

Question 49: what I thought was part of the difficulty is that while Cycling/Miracle and Modular/Scavenge would have hidden synergy less experienced players might not notice, Myriad/Battalion's interaction is non-intuitive and most less-experienced players would get it flat-out wrong, which makes it much more difficult.

Correct.

Spell Interaction Misinterpretation

New 20 Feb 2018 Asked by subbak 16 Comments

Your correction of question 49 seems to misread the question. It's not about the same spell having Cycling and Miracle, it's about both being in the same play environment, and the interaction being that if you cycle you get an instant-speed draw which you can use to cast miracles if it's your first draw of the turn. Similarly for the interaction between Scavenge and Modular. (This doesn't change the correct answer).

There are combinations that are difficult just not as difficult.
