Complexity's Role

New 30 Jan 2023 Asked by nothingbutland-blog 29 Comments

Additional pieces and complexity have always been part of the game, in Alpha ,The Hive made tokens; Clockwork Beast, Cyclopean Tomb, Fungusaur, Gaea's Liege, Living Artifact, Rock Hydra and Scavaging Ghoul used counters of some kind. In the same set Aspect of Wolf, Fireball, Gaea's Liege and Personal Incarnation involve fractions with rounding up and down(many players still have some difficulty using these cards) and then just out right comp lexity, Camouflage, Illusionary Mask, Lich,Raging River and Word of Command. Not to mention Banding, Protection, interrupt batches, tapped artifacts turning off, tapped blockers dealing no damage, in addition to individual card interactions. This game has always been complex and drawn on other components outside of just the cards. All to the enrichment of its players. Do you think without the conceit of this complexity as many early board, minature, rpg, card game players would have been drawn to this azmazing game?

I think complexity is more feature than bug, but it’s still a dangerous force to be used carefully.

Life Total Restrictions

New 09 Jan 2023 Asked by nothingbutland-blog 28 Comments

What color would have an effect that prevents a life total from going higher than a set number for examples, opponants life total can not be higher than 10 or all players life totals can not be greater than 13. Would it fall under Whites rules setting, Reds life gain restrictions, Blacks as an extension of Lich effects or fall into another color(s) part of the pie?

Being anti-life gain would be black or red, and this feels in similar space.

Grist's Planeswalker Character Design

New 02 Sep 2021 Asked by aringa90 53 Comments

I was really mind blown by Grist even it was spoilt. I love their “exotic” abilities but what surprised me is that They seem to break the known basics of pw characters. Grist doesn’t look like sapient for instance (more like a simple swarm of insects). In case it represented a Lich of some kind, it would also break the known rule that only living beings can hold a spark. Could you elaborate a bit about Grist background or if anything have changed in planeswalker characters design? Thanks :)

I can’t get into stuff that hasn’t been publicly said yet about the character. I can say Grist is sapient, but can’t get into details of how Grist “works”.

Praise for Demilich Card

New 02 Jul 2021 Asked by yourstarshipisgay-deactivated20 34 Comments

High five anyone involved in Demilich! Holy wow am I excited for this card 😁 Not only is it unique, flavorful, powerful and a win con, it doesn't need to be enabled by Green (with a crazy high mana value).

Glad you like it.

Trivia on Golgari Guild

New 22 Mar 2020 Asked by thearckanum 61 Comments

Finally is my birthday, could I get any trivia about my favorite commander Jarad, Golgari lich Lord or about Golgari guild? :D

In original Ravnica design, it took us a long time to find the Golgari mechanic. I’m not exaggerating when I say we examined forty mechanics. We ended with dredge, which definitely saw play. : )Happy Birthday!

Jarad's Ability Usage

New 25 Oct 2019 Asked by grabmyhand7-blog 24 Comments

Hi, I had a quick question about Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord, he has the ability to sacrifice a Swamp and a Forest to return him from the graveyard to your hand, but does he have to be in the graveyard to activate the ability? Could I just sacrifice all my pairs of lands just for the fun of it?

The ability only works if he’s in your graveyard.

Zombie Planeswalker Possibility

New 30 Jun 2019 Asked by aringa90 41 Comments

Is it theoretically possible to have a zombie planeswalker or the dying process make the spark disappear? I think it would be flavorful for a lich character to spark from the shock of experiencing death and then be resurrected as a zombie pw

I believe the dead can’t hold a spark. Note that the vampires in Innistrad aren’t technically dead which is why Sorin can.

Zombie/Lich Planeswalker

If or when: Zombie/Lich Planeswalker?

Minor If. It’s a frequent request, but requires lots of story support.

Lich Variations

About "form of" cards, do you consider the several Lich versions as black forms of the lich?

Kind of.

Lich Power Ambitions

New 22 Dec 2018 Asked by tbjanowski 26 Comments

Is Lich from Alpha a perfect example of black doing anything for power?

It’s a good example. I’m not sure it’s the perfect example.

Generational Presence

New 31 Oct 2018 Asked by thecurioustale 73 Comments

23 years, wow! How does it feel to have an entire generation of people alive today who grew up knowing only one person at the head of R&D? And do you have any comment on reports that you're actually a lich lord who periodically requires the souls of rules managers in order to sustain your immortality?

No comment. : )

Lich Planeswalker Potential

New 01 Oct 2018 Asked by tropicalscream 79 Comments

Could qe ever see a lich planeswalker?

Not without some strong story justification. Undead things can’t hold a spark. To save some questions, Sorin is not undead. Vampires work a bit differently on Innistrad.

Half Card Draw

New 28 Aug 2018 Asked by penthoplayer 53 Comments

Un-rules question here. So, let's say I have a Little Girl enchanted with Lifelink and a Lich's Mastery out. Whenever she deals damage, I gain that much life. Whenever I gain life, I draw that many cards. How do I draw 1/2 a card?

You can’t. You can only draw whole numbers of cards.

First Multicolor Zombie Legend

Did you know that Varina, Lich Queen from this year's commander decks is the first multicolor legendary zombie with a zombie tribal effect that's ever been printed?

I did not.

Undead Planeswalker Theory

New 20 Aug 2018 Asked by jugglervr 84 Comments

re: undead planeswalkers. Sorin is undead so that's possible. And every player is a planeswalker, and some of them have cast Lich or one of the lich variants which, by flavor, turns the player into a lich. That means that a lich planeswalker is canon.

Soren isn’t actually undead. Vampires work a little differently on Innistrad.

Lich Planeswalker Possibility

New 19 Aug 2018 Asked by homebrewdtyrant 45 Comments

Could a lich hypothetically steal a planeswalker spark from a living walker and then become a planeswalker? Is a sentient zombie planeswalker even plausible??

Not my area of expertise, but I don’t believe so.

Lich Girl Song Choice

New 09 Aug 2018 Asked by probablynotcaptainbritain 42 Comments

For the Lich Girl song, you missed out on "You can rely on the old man's body" which fits better.

The problem is on social media I have to be extra careful about innuendo and I worried “old man’s body” is too close to the line.

Naga Vitalist Trivia

New 21 Apr 2018 Asked by perkymanz 45 Comments

It's my birthday today! Can we get some trivia about Naga Vitalist or Lich?

Lich’s Mastery In Dominaria is Richard redoing the lich concept because he was never happy with how Lich turned out. Happy Birthday!

Lich's Mastery Rarity

New 11 Apr 2018 Asked by drkung-fu 45 Comments

Why was Lich's Mastery a rare and not mythic? I thought that was where you try to keep the really complex and weird effects in a set.

No, usually the most confusing cards are rare because mythic rare cards need to be splashy and confusing cards usually aren’t splashy.

New Lich Card

New 11 Apr 2018 Asked by kycygni3 56 Comments

I'm blown away that someone both wanted to and succeeded in pushing a new Lich card to print (with playability in mind, even). Please extend my gratitude to Richard and the person/s responsible for fighting for it. If you can write more about it someday beyond his facebook post, I'd love to read it.

Richard made it and it stayed until print. I’m not sure anyone ever fought to remove it.
