New Poison but No Infect

New 05 Jun 2024 Asked by mrpendu1um 6 Comments

3 Horizon sets and a return of the phyrexians and no new infect cards. We need a new one drop that can compete with the current power level of modern.

We did make a lot of new poison cards and new poison support, but we decided not to make any more infect cards. We approached poison in a new way.

Phyrexian Invasion Impact

New 20 May 2024 Asked by 1953943 19 Comments

I understand that there are things you can point to that are visible consequences of the Phyrexian invasion like story content and the deaths of Eldraine’s king and queen, but doesn’t it say something that you need to point those out as counter arguments to begin with? The problem with threatening a Phyrexian planar threat is that the damage was implied to be irreversible. Compleation often involved grotesque surgical mutilation, so it doesn’t make sense that compleated characters could return to normal so easily and without any significant scarring. Phyrexian oil is supposed to be so dangerous that a single drop could eventually infect and corrupt an entire plane, so it seems impossible to eradicate. Even ignoring the resilience of the Phyrexians themselves, a large scale military invasion aided by the most powerful beings on each plane should have left those planes in a post-apocalyptic state, yet all of that seems to be off-screen or completely disregarded. We went underground for Ixalan, so we didn’t see the devastation. We went into the wilds for Eldraine, so we didn’t see the courts in shambles. Ravnica seems to be the same as ever, just with more detective hats. And the last set of the year that immediately followed the invasion takes place on a plane nobody even lived on during the invasion, so there were no consequences to show off.I think the real issue isn’t necessarily that there weren’t consequences, but that you guys chose deliberately not to show them on cards, outside of the desparked planeswalkers and a few cards in Aftermath. As it is, it’s difficult to believe that the Phyrexian threat that was built up over decades could be so easily repelled AND completely defeated at the height of their power, but I would argue that the sets directly following the invasion should have all had a blatantly dark, somber, post-apocalyptic theme. Instead, we got a bunch of light hearted costume party sets that seemed chosen specifically to NOT show how much damage was done. I get that you want to have a tone shift after a darker year, but it just feels like instead of getting closure, we all just got whiplash instead. It would have been better to show a struggling multiverse slowly learning to rebuild before diving into the next big arc.

There’s a big difference between did big things happen and do we need to focus on them? For the Vorthoses who read the stories, the Phyrexian War had huge consequences for many worlds. From a game standpoint, it changed how we used a whole card type and allowed us to make sets we couldn’t make before. The impact of the events of March of the Machine on flavor and mechanics was major. The reason we didn’t focus on the outcomes on the cards and have a year of dreary sets is we strongly believed the majority of the players didn’t want that.

Speeding Up Games

New 08 Apr 2024 Asked by otto-von-bensmarck-blog 35 Comments

Hi Mark, I think that games of magic are too long. Everyone starts with twice, maybe even four times as much life as they should. If/when every creature is errata'd to have infect?

I suggest playing more limited. : )

Infect Archetype Paradox

New 24 Mar 2024 Asked by xansor 60 Comments

Something that has always confused me is that despite "infect" (my favorite keyword/archetype) being one of, if not the most, hated deck archetype at casual commander tables, it is still somehow the most popular archetype of the most popular commander in the game (Atraxa, Preators Voice). I also think it's worth noting she is by no means cEDH. So, how can her infect archetype be so statistically popular, and yet so many people dislike playing against it in person?

Infect (and poison, in general) is very polarizing, but that means there’s a group that really likes it.

Linear vs Parasitic

New 06 Mar 2024 Asked by jjustin1379 29 Comments

Sometimes a mechanic is for more than limited play. Energy was a whole mechanic that seemed highly pushed for competitive tournament play so much so that several of the strongest energy cards were banned and energy was still a decent choice in standard. I think the more parasitic a set mechanic is the more it is for constructed. Infect was like this too. Mechanics like blitz do not care how many you play in a deck. You do not get rewards for playing only blitz cards in your deck.

The word you mean is “linear” not “parasitic”. Parasitic only plays with cards from the set it is in. Linear means the cards pushes you play cards of a similar theme/mechanic. Linear cards more push you towards play mechanic themes in constructed. “Modular” cards, the opposite of linear, allow you to play them easier as one-ofs.

Variable Poison Concerns

New 19 Feb 2024 Asked by the-sly-guy 28 Comments

Could we see a card like "Equipped/enchanted creature gets toxic X where X is its power" or would that be too close to infect levels

I’m skeptical play design would want a variable poison number.

Infect Mechanic Insight

New 20 Jan 2024 Asked by tarrevizsla1 42 Comments

I love infect, it was how I was introduced into MTG by a buddy in middle school. Love playing it when I have the chance but I've always heard that "wotc would never touch posion again becuase they think infect was a mistake." Is there any truth to that? Does the design team think infect was a bad idea in hindsight? I always heard that then ONE reintroduced poison counters, if infect was disliked was Toxic how they think it should have been done originally?

Infect has a bunch of balance issues, but that’s on infect, not poison counters. Do I regret making infect? I do not.

Phyrexian Mana Redesign

New 21 Dec 2023 Asked by zackdes44 55 Comments

I understand Phyrexian Mana causes a myriad of issues in a number of formats, but I'm a big fan. Not necessarily of the overly-powerful cards since I don't play competitive, but for the flexibility it provides and some of the interesting design space that seems available. Do you think we'll see a 'fixed' version, like with cascade/discover or infect/poison, that could be more broadly used and not specifically linked to phyrexians

Phyrexia: All Will Be One and March of the Machine did experiment with using Phyrexian mana in different ways, such as having loyalty as an additional cost and using it in activation costs.

Mechanics Combination

New 09 Oct 2023 Asked by thunderweb 32 Comments

Can similar mechanics be put into a card (or a set) together?(e.g. "first strike and double strike", "flying and reach", "hexproof and ward", "undying and persist", or "infect, poisonous, and toxic")

We tend not to include them on the same card, but definitely will use them in the same set.

Damage to Permanents

New 28 Sep 2023 Asked by cursedereaper 23 Comments

Does deal damage to target permanent make sense or is possible within the rules? There aren't many applications but in theory if a land gets damage and is later that turn animated it can have lethal damage. Same is true for enchantments that become creatures. I ask because it would allow cards that deal damage to battle in sets without battles. Other uses are wither or infect damage against e.g. Theros gods that aren't creatures yet.

The issue is weighing the general usefulness of it with the confusion it might cause.

Poison Win Condition

New 19 Aug 2023 Asked by duckily 41 Comments

i just wanted to say i really appreciate the new poison counter win condition playstyle. the poison playstyle starting in mirrodin was mostly beatdown with infect creatures, which i do have fun with just as a game, but the playstyle introduced in ONE feels more accurate to the flavor of phyrexian infection: planting a small seed of just one poison counter and then winning by proliferating it. always makes me super happy to see flavorful gameplans like this!

Happy you like it. I enjoy both existing.

Birthday Trivia

New 04 Aug 2023 Asked by wrathbite 30 Comments

Hi Mark! I'd like to invoke birthday trivia for one of my favorite sets from recent memory, All Will Be One :)

The first version of the set (which we play tested) had infect and -1/-1 counters. Happy Birthday!

MOM Prerelease Feedback

New 17 Apr 2023 Asked by makesasound 21 Comments

I just got home from MOM prerelease, and I want to say how much fun I had. Battles, Incubate and Backup are all loads of fun and the set is full of cool and interesting cards. Seriously, it’s the most fun I’ve ever had in Limited. My single, solitary complaint is that Infected Defector seems like a missed opportunity—Defector Deflector was right there!

Glad you enjoyed it.

Mechanic Usage Explained

New 31 Mar 2023 Asked by nadavlevintov 49 Comments

Hi Mark, Why didn't Etali just say "infect"?Is it because you didn't want to put infect in a premier set or because you guys didn't want it to deal damage to creatures in -1/-1 counters?

We didn’t say infect because it wasn’t infect. Also, we tend not to use non-evergreen, non-deciduous mechanics on one card in premier sets.

Toxic Mechanics Praise

New 17 Mar 2023 Asked by ajohnnygoldmain 36 Comments

Hi Maro! I just wanted to say how much I’m enjoying playing with toxic in arena standard. I was skeptical at first bc I started playing magic when infect was new and I hated it, but toxic plays so well! High fives to the ONE design team

High fives shall be applied.

Poison Win Ambition

New 14 Mar 2023 Asked by sirxin 59 Comments

Hello Maro :) I've missed my birthday (it was yesterday) , but I would like to ask for some trivia :) I have the same problem as the previous years: I read and listen to i believe everything you post, so in most cases I already know trivia you post :) Maybe some obscure piece of info about 4-color legends? Or Infect/Poison/Phyrexia?

When Legends came out, I fell in love with poison. It was on two cards, Pit Scorpion and Serpent Generator. I made a blue/black deck with every creature copying card I had. The goal was to poison someone to death. Just once. That’s all I wanted. I played and played, but to no avail. I couldn’t win with poison. I went on to build other decks, but I would pull it out time from time. Finally, months later I managed to win with poison. It felt so good. I vowed then and there that I would do whatever I could to make a poison deck viable. When I started at Wizards, it became one of my goals. It took a while, but I did it. Poison even won a Pro Tour.Happy Birthday!

Feedback on Toxic

New 25 Feb 2023 Asked by eagle193 82 Comments

Hello Mark, I took the ONE survey recently and there wasn't a place to write this but I want to give this feedback. I really like poison counters, but I don't like toxic. I care about doing regular damage at all if I'm trying to win with poison. By the time I win with Toxic, I may have already won through regular damage or am very close. Winning through mill would be less exciting if every card you milled also did 1 damage. I'm happy to get poison back, but I wish it was closer to Infect.

I hear you. How do others feel about toxic?

Infect's Storm Scale Status

New 15 Feb 2023 Asked by lhurgyof-blog 53 Comments

Now that we've visited a New Phyrexia without infect, where does infect sit on the storm scale? I'm assuming it must be higher now that we've visited the right world and didn't get it.

Yes, infect has gone up on the storm scale to a 9.

Toxic vs Infect Naming

New 14 Feb 2023 Asked by pontemosca 30 Comments

Hi Mark, did you ever considered naming toxic something like "Infect with oil" to make it a subset of Infect and make cards that care about Toxic be backwards compatible?

Having the word infect on it would imply a lot of things that wouldn’t be true. We don’t mind keyword names referring to other keywords, but it can’t lead the players astray.
