What is the difference between a construct and a dreadnought?

A Dreadnaught is a specific kind of Construct like a Bear is a specific type of Beast.

Vehicles Lack Creature Types

New 12 Sep 2022 Asked by irlnautica 46 Comments

Is there a mechanical reason for Vehicles not to have Creature Types, such as Consulate Dreadnought not being a Dreadnought?

You can’t write it on the card type line as Dreadnaught is a creature subtype and not an artifact subtype. You could say it becomes that creature type in rules text, but it takes up a bunch of space. Usually it’s not worth doing, but I could imagine exceptions.

Phyrexian Dreadnought's Hypothetical Color

If you were making Phyrexian Dreadnought today as a colored artifact, what colors would it be?

Most likely black/red.

Absence of Early Rarity Indicators

Mark, why didn’t early sets use rarity color indicators? For the longest time, I thought that Phyrexian Dreadnought was a common, and it made my brain hurt.

We didn’t think if it.

Trivia About One Mana Cards

New 22 May 2021 Asked by attracte 75 Comments

Hey Mark! My birthday was yesterday, and I was wondering if you had any trivia about one mana value cards over the years?? (I have a One Drop Cube!)

Phyrexian Dreadnought (Mirage)This card came about because I wanted to add a 12/12 to Magic. You see, Alpha had an 8/8 in Force of Nature. Antiquities had a 9/9 in Colossus of Sardia. The Dark then got a 10/10 in Leviathan. Followed up by the 11/11 Polar Kraken in Ice Age. This seemed like a fun game that I wanted to continue playing. Bill Rose, now Vice President of R&D, was the lead designer of Mirage. He said he would add it if I could design a cool enough card. The next day I returned and said, “Is a 12/12 trampler for 1 cool enough?”Happy Birthday!

Rare Creature Types

New 10 Nov 2019 Asked by doortonothingness 79 Comments

The loneliest creature types (which have only one representative creature card not counting Changelings, tokens and Mistform Ultimus) are Brushwagg, Dreadnought, Ferret, Lamia, Mole, Oyster, Pest, Reflection, Sable, Spawn and Wombat. Where does each rank on the Beeble scale?

They are all 8 and 9’s. I can say one of them shows up on a new card in Unsanctioned. : )

Iconic Artifacts

New 14 Jun 2018 Asked by crab4communism 41 Comments

you wouldn't consider phyrexian dreadnought an iconic artifact creature? or karn, silver golem? or even solemn simulacrum?

I said there wasn’t an iconic creature type for artifacts not that they’re were iconic artifact creatures. Different uses of “iconic”.

Ixalan Ships Faction

Regarding all the ships featured in Ixalan, which ones belong to which faction? I know that Fell Flagship belongs to Pirates and Dusk Legion Dreadnought belongs to Vampires, just curious about the others.

The ships are just Pirate and Vampires I believe.

Are we going to see another creature with the Dreadnought subtype?

Perhaps one day.

Future High-Power Cards

New 09 Dec 2015 Asked by uvinoko 32 Comments

Will we ever see a card such as "Phyrexian Dreadnought" or "Eater of Days" printed in the future with the power scale of Phyrexian Dreadnought?

Will we print a card the power of a card we had to ban? : ) Maybe, but not on purpose.

Ludevic's Abomination Mention

New 05 Nov 2014 Asked by kcaht 75 Comments

As a 13/13 with a converted mana cost of zero, Ludevic's Abomination is in fact a creature bigger than Phyrexian Dreadnought for less mana.

Touché.

Creature Size Limits

New 04 Nov 2014 Asked by aazadan 31 Comments

Any chance we'll ever see a creature bigger than Phyrexian Dreadnought for less mana?

Bigger than 12/12 for less than 1? Let’s go with no. Wait I never say never. Okay, it’s extremely unlikely.

Creatures Size Evolution

New 18 Nov 2013 Asked by orlouge82 25 Comments

Green currently "has the biggest creatures," but when Magic first started, blue had the biggest (besides artifacts creatures like Phyrexian Dreadnought and Colossus of Sardia, the game's biggest creatures were Leviathan and Polar Kraken). I understand the flavor reasons for green now getting the biggest creatures, but what are the flavor reasons for blue continuing to have such big creatures?

We decided not to let blue have everything. : ) Let the snarky comments commence.

Future Card Mechanisms

New 15 Nov 2012 Asked by thejohnnytimmyspike 1 Comments

Can we expect to see more "Stifle hungry" cards (Phyrexian Dreadnought, Eater of Days, Leveler, et.c) in the future?

We don’t do as many as we used to but I’m sure we’ll do one every once in a while.
