Bottle Family Expansion

Big fan of the Bottle Gnomes/Bottle Golems cards. Do you think we could one day see another member of the Bottle family?

I do.

Silver Golem in Silver Border

New 03 May 2020 Asked by lizardest-bethany 35 Comments

Hi mark! yesterday was my birthday and I wanted to ask how likely it is to see our favorite silver golem, Karn, in a silver border? do you have any ideas of how one might work?

Urza exists in both black and silver border, so a silver-bordered Karn could happen.Happy Belated Birthday!

Generic Artifacts Promise

New 30 Jun 2019 Asked by straxaerioeragous 36 Comments

I can only be okay with colored artifacts if you promise you'll still make some generic ones for my karn, silver golem edh deck.

There will still be generic ones made.

Karn's Spark Origin

New 13 Jan 2019 Asked by dead0not0sleeping-deactivated20 36 Comments

You said that artificially created creatures can't hold a spark. How do you explain Karn? Golems, even silver ones, are artificially created life.

Venser gave his spark to Karn. Karn never naturally had one.

Karn's Silver Origin

New 10 Jan 2019 Asked by dude1818 44 Comments

Sorry, I meant why did you decide to make Karn silver in the first place?

We wanted him to be a golem and golems are made out of a single substance. We thought silver would look cool.

Iconic Artifacts

New 14 Jun 2018 Asked by crab4communism 41 Comments

you wouldn't consider phyrexian dreadnought an iconic artifact creature? or karn, silver golem? or even solemn simulacrum?

I said there wasn’t an iconic creature type for artifacts not that they’re were iconic artifact creatures. Different uses of “iconic”.

Ace Walkers Representation

New 12 Nov 2017 Asked by kitsunesfire 84 Comments

Will we ever get ace walkers that arent literally a robot? Sort of reinforces bad stereotypes, tho I know wizards didnt do that on purpose

Karn is not some emotionless robot. He’s a golem with deep emotions and is one of the most sympathetic and popular characters in the game.

Creatures with Sparks

New 12 May 2017 Asked by viseling 68 Comments

'Artificially created creatures can’t naturally have a spark.' ...What about second and third generation golems or Simic creations? If Karn and Shambleshark had a baby, would that be an artificially created creature, or could it be a planeswalker?

I think you misunderstand some basic biological things about Karn.: )

Karn's Gender Discussion

New 14 Dec 2016 Asked by daringapprentice 235 Comments

Karn has been consistently referred to as male throughout his history. See his Vanguard card, Pacifism, Thran Golem, Power Matrix, Energy Flux, Corrupted Conscience, Distant Memories, and Praetor’s Counsel.

Karn has no gender. Karn looks more masculine than feminine so people refer to Karn as “he”. It’s not an issue Karn focuses on so Karn just lets people do what’s more comfortable for them. The reason we use “he” when talking about Karn in flavor text and articles is that when Karn was created gender identity wasn’t a big public thing yet, and we’ve chosen to be consistent. We’ve talked about whether Karn is supposed to care, and it’s possible one day Karn will. If that day comes, we’d revisit how we and characters refer to Karn.

Karn Trivia

New 04 Apr 2016 Asked by great-rusher-blog 46 Comments

Mark, you ignored my wedding birthday, I'll give you a second chance. It is my birthday could you give me any trivia about karn, silver Golem?

Urza made Karn out of silver because it was the one substance that he could send through time. Happy Birthday!

Nonhumanoid Planeswalkers

New 25 Mar 2016 Asked by jugglervr 76 Comments

Mark, you've said before that you greatly prefer humanoid planeswalkers because you feel the audience needs to connect with them... How's your market research on nonhumanoid 'walkers? I personally vastly prefer video games in which I can play something non-human and ideally nonhumanoid, and I NEVER play as humans if I have the chance to be something else. In MTG, Vraska, Bolas, and Ugin are the coolest walkers just because they're "not just another human". PLEASE start branching out more. ~20%?

Ajani is a Cat.
Kiora is a Merfolk.
Karn is a Golem.
Daretti is a Goblin.
Sorin is a Vampire.
Arlinn Kord is a Werwolf.
Ob Nixilis is a Demon.
They’re not all Human.

Angel Planeswalker Theory

New 10 Nov 2015 Asked by giltiax 31 Comments

Is it true that an Angel creature could never ignite a Spark and become a Planeswalker?

Created creatures, of which Angels are, can’t naturally gave a spark. Of course that’s true for Golems too and Karn has a spark (given to him by Venser) so there’s hope.

Karn and Sorin Facts

New 07 Sep 2015 Asked by linksfood-deactivated20181216 34 Comments

I see a lot of facts being asked today and thought I'd throw my hat into the ring! Today's my birthday and I was wondering if you had any cool facts about Karn Silver Golem or Sorin Markov (cards with huge personal value)? Thanks for all of the work you do for us and I love your blog!

Karn got his name from the word “Cairn” which is a human-made pile of stones. Happy Birthday!

Karn's Unique Nature

New 02 Aug 2015 Asked by bajoebo 36 Comments

Artificial beings can't have sparks but what about Karn being a planeswalker? He's a golem.

Take pictures of Mirrodin and Kaladesh and hold them side by side. That! : ) EDIT: Oh Tumblr! The original question is how are Mirrodin and Kaladesh different?

Karn's Mortality

New 13 Dec 2014 Asked by fleshswagmarauder 24 Comments

You seemed afraid that Karn would die if you said he was your favorite, but can Karn die? I assume if the plot wanted him dead, it would find a way, but is he 'mortal' in the traditional sense?

Karn is not mortal but things could clearly happen to the golem.

Legendary Golem Desire

New 05 Oct 2014 Asked by timebender13 36 Comments

Can we also ask you for legendary creatures of types we already have but want more? Because we haven't seen a legendary golem in a loooong time!

As his creator, Karn will always hold a soft spot in my heart.

Tezzeret's Species

New 14 Jul 2014 Asked by epicexperiment-blog 17 Comments

RE Tezzeret as a Vedalken: The asker was asking about Tezzeret being a Vedalken in species, the same way that Tamiyo is a Moonfolk, Ajani is a cat, Tibalt is a Devil/Human hybrid, Kiora is a Merfolk, Karn is a Golem, Nicol Bolas is a Dragon, Nissa is an Elf, Sorin is a Vampire, Vraska is a Gorgon, and Xenagos is/was a Satyr.

That is a Doug question.

Missed Details

New 14 Jul 2014 Asked by organizedhysteria 26 Comments

Thanks to a random post by Neil Tysson, I now know that Mirrodin's given name, Argentum, means silver in Latin, and Karn is a silver golem. How often do you think little details like that get missed by the community at large?

Magic’s a pretty deep rabbit hole. Someone notices everything but much gies unseen by most.

Karn's Gender Identity

New 20 Jun 2014 Asked by tarrandus 173 Comments

Some quick stats on 'walkers based off of Doug's article: there are currently 24 Planeswalker characters with cards. 16 are male, 7 are female, and 1 is Ashiok. 13 humans, 1 half-human, and 10 non-humans, counting Ashiok as non-human. (Not entirely sure on Ashiok, but face-have is generally a human trait), 1 is dead, 2 are dead*

Karn, by the way, is actually not gendered. People refer to him as “he” but Karn is a golem and doesn’t have boy or girl parts. EDIT: Sorry. Let me be clearer. Karn does not have a gender identity because he does not associate as either male or female. Above I was actually trying to state that he is not biologically male or female. I apologize if I offended anyone.

Theros Gods Typeline

New 03 Feb 2014 Asked by option01 19 Comments

If you had unlimited space on the card for the Theros god's typelines, what would they have been? e.g. Would Mogis have ended up "Legendary Enchantment Creature - God Minotaur Warrior"?

I think we would follow our planeswalker example where when you get big enough, it overrides your race/class. Planeswalker Karn is not a golem and Ajani is not a cat.
