Appreciation of Duskmourn Aesthetic

New 30 Jun 2024 Asked by elderaktis 5 Comments

Personally, I love the Duskmourn aesthetic. Could you apply high fives to the people in charge of costuming? The art on Collected Company (esp Tyvar's outfit) is exactly what I wanted out of this set.

Will do.

Arena Set Inclusions

New 07 Mar 2023 Asked by skagerrakgodofdarkness 32 Comments

FYI: amonkhet remastered on arena had both collected company and thoughtseize (with new amonkhet themed art), neither of which were in the original block. I imagine this is something a digital remastered set could do but not a paper one?

We haven’t done it yet in paper. Digital often looks to get specific cards onto digital.

CoCo's Aptness for White

Hope this hasn't been asked too much before- would you agree that collected company feels more in pie for white than green?

It could totally be a white card.

Spells with CMC Range Possibility

New 18 Apr 2021 Asked by shitting-in-the-woods 42 Comments

There are many effects that specify a cmc less than a certain amount (ala collected company), and probably a few than a have a minuimum amount and up (demon lord belzonok, iirc), so could there be a spell with a cmc range, ei cast a spell for free with cmc 2-4? Why or why not?

The rules can handle it no problem.

White's Library Mechanics

New 20 Aug 2018 Asked by werewolftits 29 Comments

re: white collected company how is putting small creatures from the top few cards of the library significantly different from cards like militia bugler? is bugler a heavy bend too?

White can put creature from library into hand. It doesn’t put them directly onto the battlefield.

Severe bend. White doesn’t put creatures from the library onto the battlefield.

Green's Tutoring Dominance

New 18 May 2017 Asked by discoviolenza 66 Comments

Is there a conscious effort in R&D to make green the best tutor color? Every competitive tutor printed recently is in green Traverse the Ulvenwald, Birthing Pod, Collected Company, Green Suns Zenith, Chord of Calling just curious as an old timey magic player I think of black as the tutor color.

Green is the best creature tutoring color.

Collected Company Trivia

New 06 May 2017 Asked by chandiggity-blog 32 Comments

My birthday was yesterday. Can I get trivia on my favorite card, Collected Company? Thanks!

The converted mana cost restriction was done for power level reasons, but that particular restriction is much more associated with white than green. We just needed a way to keep the effect under control so we borrowed it.Happy Belated Birthday!

Library Search Mechanics

New 26 Jan 2017 Asked by mrpyromania-deactivated20210823 42 Comments

When looking at the top n cards of your library, why do some cards allow you to put them on the bottom in any order (like Collected Company), while others specify a random order (like Aetherworks Marvel)?

If it’s just a few cards, we let you order them but if it’s more than that we make it random to avoid making players spend brain energy on it.

Green's Mechanical Flaw

New 25 Nov 2016 Asked by fridgealarm 47 Comments

What is the mechanical weakness of Green? Green can destroy all card types (e.g. Beast Within and Bramblecrush + Rabid Bite) Green can generate mass card advantage (Collected Company, Praetor's Counsel) can tutor for lands & creatures or look and take cards from top of the deck like Black or Blue. It has efficient creatures of all sizes with trample, hexproof, deathtouch, flash, indestructible, vigilance, haste, tapping for mana, lure effect, curiosity effect, reach, infect and sometimes flying.

Green is over-reliant on its creatures. For instance, its creature removal and card drawing is tied to its creatures.

Addressing Green Power

New 28 Aug 2016 Asked by tinytim93-blog-blog 44 Comments

FYI, a previous ask claimed a dearth in green power, yet green has two incredible man lands (Hissing Quagmire and Lumbering Falls), mid range tokens (Ishkanah), a too powerful for standard spell (Collected Company), and arguably the best damn creature in standard which also synergizes with the aforementioned man lands (Sylvan Advocate) just to name a few things.

My point exactly. : )

Meta Design Shift

New 04 Aug 2016 Asked by kingdomangus 120 Comments

Since the direction of design has seemingly changed to be significantly less focused on spells, we've seen blue and red die off as colors in standard. Do you think this design change is incorrect seeing what has happened, or do you plan to try and work blue and red into the new midrange metas?

Less focused on spells? Let’s check the Standard metagame. Here are the five current most powerful cards: (yes, I had some help compiling this list)Collected CompanyAvacynSylvan AdvocateLanguishDromoka’s CommandTwo of them are creatures.*Three* of them are spells.Yes, the pendulum swings making certain colors stronger and weaker in the metagame, but it’s not because we’re unwilling to make powerful spells.

Standard Format Mistakes

New 23 Apr 2016 Asked by heshotmeagain 9 Comments

If I read correctly, you believe collected Company and jace vryn's prodigy were mistakes? Well what exactly does r&d want standard to look like? Powerful cards yes, but how are they broken?

I them said “mistakes” was incorrect. They were more powerful than we realized.

Balancing Card Colors

New 24 Jun 2015 Asked by papagoriot 62 Comments

Why green cards are so pushed, while blue cards get progressively more expensive/less useful? Collected company being an instant is the definition of pushing green to the extreme...

Take comfort in the fact that there are many out there who believe we coddle Blue and are unfair to Green. : )
