Set Previews Overload

New 24 Feb 2024 Asked by dungeonmasterryan 35 Comments

Mark why are so many sets being previewed all at once? I can't even focus on anything cause there's just so much. Id be happy for thoughtseize being reprinted if I could focus on it.

We used to just preview the next set. As with anything, we experiment to see if we can improve upon the process. So, we tried previewing farther ahead, showing more things. The feedback we got is the players mostly preferred the “show us more” version, so that is what we do.

Arena Set Inclusions

New 07 Mar 2023 Asked by skagerrakgodofdarkness 32 Comments

FYI: amonkhet remastered on arena had both collected company and thoughtseize (with new amonkhet themed art), neither of which were in the original block. I imagine this is something a digital remastered set could do but not a paper one?

We haven’t done it yet in paper. Digital often looks to get specific cards onto digital.

Card Wording: Player vs Opponent

New 29 Jun 2022 Asked by jiyva 69 Comments

Why does "Thoughtseize" say "target player" while "Duress" say "target opponent"? 99% of the time cards like "Thoughtseize" would be used on the opponent. Is there any guideline in deciding when to put "target player" or "target opponent" in a card?

It just has to do with when they were first printed. Templates can change over time. In this case, I assume influenced by the rise of digital play.

Concerns about Discard Mechanic

New 17 Feb 2022 Asked by cactusbonanza-deactivated202204 113 Comments

I don't understand why Discard - probably the most maligned supported mechanic - is continually buffed every set. Before a player even gets a TURN, a single mana will:

  • Disrupt the player's mulligan they took to keep a curve
  • Reveal a deck's colors/game plan
  • Disrupt the opponent's ability to interact (due to playing around known issues)
  • Get rid of a deck's key piece to winning.
  • Achieve card advantage
Discard, far more so than counterspells, is such bad gameplay/feeling, that most people quit on Turn 1 when a Durress/Thoughtseize, etc is played. I do. My opponent's do. Yesterday, you said you guys are careful to not make Discard so powerful, you create Discard decks. Then can you explain Tergrid? Tinybones? Waste Not? Gutmorn? Fell Specter? Sangromancer? If anything, you guys are pushing Discard, and thereby, pushing the most unfun, players-will-walk environment possible.

A few things:1) Discard is not the most maligned, but yes, there is a segment of the audience that dislikes it. There is also a segment of the audience that very much enjoys it and thinks it adds a lot to the game.2) By “discard decks”, I meant decks that do nothing but make the opponent discard and then use a win condition that takes advanatage of the opponent having no cards in hand (things like The Rack). 3) We do want decks (well, black ones at least) to have access to discard as a tool, but in moderation. Those individual cards can be powerful though.

Concerns About Text Line Breaks

New 06 Aug 2021 Asked by kmattmebro 39 Comments

Whenever I see cards with line breaks in the text like on the new Infernal Grasp that reads "Destroy target creature. You lose 2 // life." I die a little inside. Would you consider asking the person who does the templating about it? Compare the Double Masters printing of Thoughtseize to the older versions and you'll see how much better things can be. The orphans need your help!

We print in eleven languages, so we can’t always micromanage line breaks within one language.

Spell Fizzling Rule

New 24 Jan 2020 Asked by simicmimic 48 Comments

In “Starting Over” you say you’d remove the spell fizzling rule. Would you just have them do as much of their effect as they could, so Thoughtseize would still make you lose 2 life even if your opponent gained hexproof?

Yes.

Color Pie vs Power Level

New 04 Jan 2020 Asked by myheartgoesoontz 29 Comments

"As a rule of thumb, if you can change numbers and make a color playable, it’s not a color pie issue, but a power level one." But white appears to be the only color where numbers dictate the color pie. Lightning Bolt, Mana Leak, Thoughtseize, and Path to Exile are four cards that are generally too good for Standard despite having in-color effects, but only Path is considered to be out of pie because of its efficiency.

Removal is treated a little differently as you don’t want colors overall being better than colors that are supposed to have stronger removal of a certain subset.

Black's Preemptive Strategy

New 03 Dec 2019 Asked by nicoboluscage-blog 45 Comments

Why are cards like Thoughtseize and Inquisition Of Kozilek allowed to hit artifacts and enchantments if there supposed to be blacks weakness?

Artifact destruction is a problem for black. Once their opponent gets an artifact onto the battlefield, black doesn’t have answers to get rid of it. Discard is a tool black has access to.

Pioneer Cards Concerns

Are there any cards in the sets for pioneer that you would be unwilling to reprint into standard? Thoughtseize comes to mind but I'm sure there are others.

Of course.

Reprints in Standard

New 01 Nov 2017 Asked by 3hip5me 33 Comments

I understand that the combination of Mutavault and Thoughtseize proved problematic in the specific Standard they were reprinted in, but the very fact that they were reprinted at all meant a lot to many players of non-rotating formats. It showed that Wizards cared about us and our needs nearly as much as they cared about Standard and Draft players. Is there any chance at all that R&D might take risks like that again with *powerful* reprints in Standard?

If we can do so without badly warping Standard.

Favorite Cards Insights

New 20 Aug 2017 Asked by lifesalitbook 48 Comments

Hey, Maro! It's Vincent, one of the guys who took you around UCI back in June. It's my birthday today, so I wanted to ask you if you had any trivia about either one of my favorite cards, Thoughtseize or Burnished Hart. Thanks!

Thoughtseize came about in Lorwyn because we were combing two common black effects - discard and paying life to make things cheaper. It ended up being a potent combo. We brought it back in Theros because we knew black could use it in an enchantment heavy set. Once again, thanks for the tour. And happy birthday!

Game Core Integrity

New 03 Jul 2017 Asked by gophilipbowles 38 Comments

"it undermined the core construct of the game, something that if done too much will break Magic." Is one card "too much"? I've seen you criticise aspects of the Khans format in the past - including Hornet Queen and Thoughtseize - but as far as I can tell it was the best-received Standard format for year. Hornet Queen may not have been ideal for the reasons you give, but it was an existing tool that provided the sorts of answers more recent formats have lacked to their cost.

Magic can have balanced, fun environments without resorting to having cards that hurt the integrity of its core structure.

Core Sets Reprints

New 13 Jun 2017 Asked by flamablerabbit 42 Comments

Are the reprints in the new Core Sets exclusively for external format use or will they be Standard playable? I assumed Wizards were done with reprints in Standard after the mixed reception to Thoughtseize and Mutavault.

The reprints in the core set will be Standard-legal, as will the new cards.

Thoughtseize's Secret Identity

New 01 Apr 2017 Asked by memesareevil-blog 29 Comments

Would thoughtseize be in white's slice of the color pie as it gave them life?

Thoughtseize is secretly a white card. Keep this between us.

Desire for Powerful Cards

New 23 Dec 2016 Asked by vault756 43 Comments

Mark I think you are missing the point when people say they want to play with more powerful cards like discard and counterspells. As recently as Theros we had thoughtseize and as recently as 2014 a draw go control deck won a pro tour. These aren't strategies that only "old timers" want to play. People want to play these in standard. All the pro tours are standard, there are barely any legacy GPs. Are players who like these strategies just supposes to not play the most pushed format in magic?

Thoughtseize is a poster child of how bringing back a powerful old card messes up Standard. I got more complaints about Thoughtseize than just about any other card from that time period. We want players to have accessibility to tournament-viable control-style effects, but that doesn’t mean they have to be at the level of broken cards of the past.

Color Pie Hand Viewing

New 19 Dec 2016 Asked by extremecolourtyphoon 28 Comments

The concern people have isn't that viewing hands *is* in black's pie, but the colour it's most strongly in- blue- hasn't received a card in a long time. Nobody's saying you shouldn't have printed Thoughtseize, but rather that you should *also* be printing blue cards that view hands.

We don’t like the game play so we’ve been pulling back on it in Blue. With choice discard, we have no choice but to show you the opponent’s hand so we still do that, but even that we’re careful how much we do.

Tarmogoyf's Power Level

New 26 Nov 2016 Asked by axitreii-blog 42 Comments

In your opinion is Tarmogoyf too powerful for a standard environment? Maybe one without thoughtseize or fetchlands or delirium.

Not a developer, but too powerful. Tarmogoyf is one of the most powerful creatures ever printed.

Mind Effects Color Pie

New 04 Oct 2016 Asked by flammenarsch 46 Comments

Hey Mark! Question about the colour pie. Why are effects, that look into someones hand (e.g. Thoughtseize) black? It looks more blue to me, getting in someones head and erasing memories and stuff. Like Jace. Thank you and keep up the awesome work!

Blue and Black both mess with the mind in different ways. Blue is more likely to make you forget while Black lobotomies you.

Standard Balance Strategy

New 11 May 2016 Asked by the-dude85 28 Comments

Why doesn't r&d design standard to be balanced around powerful reprints? To use thoughtseize as an example: it warped standard, no question there. So why wasn't there a reprint in WURG to boost those power levels, or why wasn't mono black control just a worse deck to play with thoughtseize in mind?

Each set only gets so much power. We’d rather focus that on new cards with new abilities. Old powerful cards have already had the opportunity to warp Standard around be them.

Card Fit Analysis

New 01 May 2016 Asked by abundantfrog 42 Comments

I want to say that thoughtseize is different from a card like snapcaster mage or liliana of the veil, because thoughtseize can fit in most any deck in its colors and be a great fit. Snapcaster mage needs a significant amount of low-cost instants/sorceries that are relevant at all points in the game. Or more deck-specific cards like scapeshift at rare without the utility lands to make the combo, or ad nauseum, or cards along that line.

If Snapcaster Mage was in Shadows over Innistrad it would warp Standard. It warps formats with a lot more cards available to play.
