Printing Process of Tokens

New 18 Jul 2024 Asked by justforaskingmaro 7 Comments

There exists a number of tokens, or variations of, for example one with Throne of Eldraine "human 1/1" (the villager woman) where the other side has the exact same token too. Is this a mistake, a necessary quirk of the printing system, or is there some real reason to do so?

When we make tokens, it gets printed on a sheet. Depending on how many copies exist of a single card in the sheet will dictate how many “versions” of it there are with different backs. If only one appears on the sheet, it will always have the same back.

DOM and ELD Trivia

New 08 Jul 2024 Asked by ella-is-scarlet-exclusive 4 Comments

Hey Mark, it's my birthday! Can I get trivia on DOM or ELD? They were both significant milestones in my MTG journey and are dear to me.

Dominaria was originally going to be a small block (one larger set and one small), but the small set got changed into a core set just before it was about to begin design.Happy Birthday!

Power Level Adjustment in Sets

New 19 Jun 2024 Asked by justforaskingmaro 5 Comments

Set B "obsoletes" set A is a strong word, but let's focus a moment on pioneer, not very old vintage cards. I have a database of "top playables" in pioneer, restarted after every banning. Cards get into list based on certain number of appearances in goldfish's tournament winners, but criteria is equal to all cards. 9 OG Theros cards are on the list, 5 KTK cards. 4 RTR cards (+ shocks) 21 MKM cards are. 20 LCI cards. 13 OTJ. New sets have vastly more cards in list, thus are stronger.

The switch for a Standard-focus to an Eternal-focus forced us to up the overall power level of premier sets in Throne of Eldraine, so yes, Throne of Eldraine and sets after do have an overall high power level. That wasn’t set by set creep though, but a conscious one-time adjustment.

Dominaria United Monocolor Themes

New 04 Jun 2024 Asked by shahrathestoryteller 30 Comments

Hi Mark! I would like to request some birthday trivia please! Specifically, in Dominaria United, each monocolor was assigned a mechanical theme (e.g. White = Go Wide, Blue = Sorceries and Instants matter). I was wondering if you could please elaborate the monocolor themes in Throne of Eldraine as I believe they aren't explicitly stated anywhere on l'internet.

Each of the five courts had a virtue which we built the color around mechanically, as well as flavorfully:
  • White Court (Ardenvale) – Loyalty
  • Blue Court (Vantress) – Knowledge
  • Black Court (Lochthwain) – Persistence
  • Red Court (Embereth) – Courage
  • Green Court (Garenbrig) – Strength
White leaned into “go wide” with creatures helping one another.Blue leaned into control with card drawing.Black leaned into graveyard recursion.Red leaned into aggression.Green leaned into caring about creature size.Happy Birthday!

Mono Color Focus Sets

New 29 May 2024 Asked by azetsu222 31 Comments

If/when a Standard set with a strong Mono Color focus. Last one was OG Theros

Throne of Eldraine was after that. We don’t do them often.

Power Creep Myth

New 22 May 2024 Asked by 00no-name00 12 Comments

Is power creep inevitable? Will powerful creatures of today all seem weak in 4 years? Or can power plateau and stay the same?

Power creep means that the sets of today are more powerful, on average, than the sets of yesterday. It doesn’t mean individual cards can’t be the best version of something. We did up the average power level in Throne of Eldraine, adapting to a more eternal environment, but the sets since then have been of a consistent power level (giving room for some ebb and flow). So no, power creep isn’t inevitable.Non-rotating formats will go up in power level over time as cards get added to the system, but that’s the nature of non-rotation. It isn’t power creep.

Haste in Black Creatures

New 12 Apr 2024 Asked by crusadingeggplant 35 Comments

hi Mark,I wanted to ask about Haste in Black. It just kinda hit me that for a while we had a few hasty creatures in mono-black.

Notably ELD had Rankle, Clackbridge Troll and Deathless Knight (green-black but can be played in mono-black). There's also Banehound in WAR and Vengeful Reaper in Kaldheim (which I probably played in standard more than it should be played tbh).

Was this an intentional experiment? A quirk of design that 'just happened' because its a tool that is always there and happened to be used more than usual? If it was an experiment, it seems like the verdict was 'no haste in black creatures', but I'd be interested in hearing more about it!

Haste is, and has been for a while, secondary in black. It’s used less than green these days which is also secondary in haste.

Marketing Themes

New 09 Apr 2024 Asked by andalon-historian 42 Comments

You say in the Handoff document that you were surprised how marketing leaned into the Western theme. Is that analogous to how marketing leaned into the Fairy Tales theme of original Eldraine?

The exact opposite. I had to push to get the marketing of Throne of Eldraine to lean into fairy tales.

Dual Legends Planeswalkers

New 08 Apr 2024 Asked by mayoigatari 98 Comments

In March of the Machine we got legendary creature cards with two legends depicted in the art, name and similar abilities that the original legendaries had. Is it unrealistic to see planeswalkers printed the similar way? For example in Throne of eldraine we got The Royal Scions for Will and Rowan. Flavor wise it was one of my favorite cards to play with on Arena just from the voice lines of the two characters bickering with one another.

It’s on the table if there’s a reason to do it.

Oko in OTJ Limited

New 27 Mar 2024 Asked by pisci95 29 Comments

Given that Oko, theif of crowns was banned in most formats, what went into the decision to include it in OTJ limited?

It shows up at a much lower rate than it did in Throne of Eldraine limited.

Love in Magic Cards

New 14 Feb 2024 Asked by coffeetime88 38 Comments

Howdy Mark! For my Birthday Trivia, could I get some trivia on Love in Magic? Also, thank you once again for making Unfinity. I'm gonna treat myself to some packs for my gift to myself

There are only three cards with Love in their name: Love Song of Night and Day (Dominaria United), True Love’s Kiss (Throne of Eldraine), and Tunnel of Love (Unfinity).Happy Birthday!

Commander Reference Clarification

New 09 Feb 2024 Asked by piccadilly-blue 30 Comments

>We don’t write the word “Commander” in rules text of premier set cards.Well, you did. Once. Arcane Signet from Throne of Eldraine was standard-legal because you guys were really trying to push Brawl as a format at the time.

Sorry, in premier booster sets.

Fairy Tale Trope Reception

New 01 Feb 2024 Asked by spartacusreturned 57 Comments

You mentioned that Wilds of Eldraine made the conscious decision to redo fairy tale tropes already done in Throne of Eldraine if the second design was interesting enough. Was this well received in general? I heard some comments in the internets about this being lazy, though I personally didn't mind.

The data was people didn’t seem to care. Also, making a new card based on a fairy tale trope we already referenced is just as much work as making a new one.

Typal Draft Archetypes

New 04 Jan 2024 Asked by yuleooze 26 Comments

Hi Mark! Next time you talk about typal draft archetypes on your podcast, could you talk about the creatures that dont get the type that matters? The berserkers in KTK that could have been warriors, the soldiers in ELD etc.

If every creature is the relevant type, we might as well just say “creature”. The reason typal is interesting for design is that it makes players evaluate cards differently.

Monocolor Theme Cards

New 17 Oct 2023 Asked by thewhitespirit 35 Comments

About "monocolored creatures"; as you told me once, I understand a monocolored set is awfully difficult to elabore, but could it be possible to create more cards that encourage to play full mono, like we saw in Throne of Eldraine with "Locthwain Paladin" or "Searing Barrage" in the future by example ? :)

We can and do make sets with monocolor themes. They’re tricky to make work in draft, but we create them, and will make more.

Return to Worlds Timing

New 29 Sep 2023 Asked by haveasmileitsonme 29 Comments

Re: My previous ask about "caution" levels - With particular regards to Eldraine and Strixhaven, I was talking about their returns. You have said before that you all work about 2-3 years out and with something like Strixhaven (which came out in 2021), you've already announced a return, which tells me that Wizards likely greenlit a return with less data than usual. In a previous ask, you said Wizards greenlit MH2 even before seeing the full results of MH1. That's what I'm asking about

Modern Horizons 2 is the exception. We got to see the audience’s response to Throne of Eldraine and Strixhaven before we made the choice to return to either world. Note that Modern Horizons is a very different style of product and is more card-centric in its focus than our premier sets are. Its theme is more “complex and nostalgia rich designs”.

Creature Adventures Explanation

New 27 Sep 2023 Asked by pleasantballoonllama 20 Comments

If or when: Creature - Adventures?

When Throne of Eldraine premiered Adventures, they were all creature Adventures. If you mean the Adventure spell itself is a creature, the rules don’t support that. They can only be non-permanents.

Jokes to Cards

New 15 Sep 2023 Asked by kilconey 69 Comments

"It's just a joke" - you're right, it was just a joke in the ELD trailer, but then Syr Ginger got made into a real card. What's to stop 'Syr Ginger kills Garruk' from going from joke to card? Fblthp was a joke too, and he's become two cards. Even just a few asks down you admit that the GB vigilant angel is a When because its become "too much of a thing not to". I would really hate to see major characters and story decisions be determined by community memes and jokey fanservice

Magic has had silly components since it’s inception. Those elements existing doesn’t mean the story can’t take things seriously.

Eldraine's Arthurian Mix

New 12 Sep 2023 Asked by skagerrakgodofdarkness 46 Comments

I really have enjoyed Wilds, though I will also second the opinion that eldraine is at its best (for me) when it mixes in the Arthurian stuff. It makes the world feel more solid, like a place I could actually live

Wilds of Eldraine is about 25% Arthurian influence. Throne of Eldraine is just the inverse where it was 75%.

Eldraine's Narrative Diversity

New 09 Sep 2023 Asked by hellworldprincess 54 Comments

I really liked WOE’s vibe of “there’s like 10 different big events happening all over the plane” it really makes the world feel more alive then the standard plot of “there’s one big mcguffen/monster”. makes me excited for more backdrop sets

I’m glad you enjoy it. I should point out Wilds of Eldraine is not a backdrop set. It overlaps a lot in mechanical themes from Throne of Eldraine.
