Miku Secret Lair Bonus Cards

New 08 Jun 2024 Asked by hyralc 121 Comments

I just got my Miku secret lair and generally I'm very happy with it; it looks gorgeous. However, I must comment frustration that there's two separate bonus cards, with a difference of rarity it seems, no less. It sucks that 'oh actually there's another Miku card you don't get without going to the secondary market which will absolutely ratchet up the price." This feels different to the more generic bonus cards like the slivers which weren't attached to any one secret lair

Two questions: (for everyone to answer) 1) Do you prefer the bonus to be connected to the Secret Lair theme or separate? 2) Do you like the ability to occasionally get rarer bonus cards, or would you prefer all of them get the same thing?

Future D&D Sets

New 11 Apr 2024 Asked by luvkraft 28 Comments

I play Commander with my friends using only D&D cards, so I was very happy when I saw the secret lair in last year's movie collaboration. (And Stranger Things, of course.) Can we expect more D&D-related sets in the future?

Not in the immediate future, but I believe there’s a better chance we make more than not.

Discord Card Eligibility

New 20 Mar 2024 Asked by luc890 28 Comments

Hi mark! So for the discord card from the secret lair, it says “a non-land magic card name”. So would that include: double faced cards with a land on the back, silver border/acorn cards, test cards from mystery booster, test cards from Gavin's unknown event, and hero's of the realm cards? It seems like some of them shouldn’t count. If so which ones?

Any can count if it’s in the database.

Future Doctor Who Cards

New 27 Dec 2023 Asked by lykrast 28 Comments

Hypothetiqually: in a few years wotc decides to do another dr who crossover and feature newer content from it, like 15th doctor's season(s). Do you think you'd reprint the 15th doctor card from the secret lair, or make a new one?

Probably make a new one.

Themed Land Feedback

New 15 Oct 2023 Asked by arcanistlupus 59 Comments

"I think players who care about deck aesthetics like having basic lands match and/or be of a similar feel, but lots of players could care less. I agree the more enfranchised you get the greater the chance deck aesthetics matter" - while this is probably true, I suspect that the target audience of themed land Secret Lairs mostly care about aesthetics.

I’m taking the note of “could you give us the option of buying more of a single basic land” to heart and will pass it along to the Secret Lair team.

Reskins and Character Accuracy

New 28 Sep 2023 Asked by bassimelwakil 109 Comments

As someone who loves Universes Beyond and the Princess Bride, I can’t emphasise enough how little I want the Secret Lair drop. If you make a UB card, I want something mechanically representative, not a skin of a card that was designed for something else. I love that Battle of Wits is in there; but the rest of the lair… Vizzini has nothing to do with the character. Maybe I could get on board if he was a reskin of Atris since he makes you pick between two piles, one face up and the other face down but… Inigo is Samut?I don’t want these cards because they don’t feel like the characters they represent. I understand that people don’t want “mechanically unique universes beyond cards” but those people don’t want universes beyond cards. They want MtG canon equivalents. So doesn’t it make sense to make them unique and then make mtg versions of ones in demand?I know you’re trying to appeal to two diametrically opposed groups but for me, I’m sorry to say this is a big miss.

How do others feel about “reskins”, aka existing Magic cards reskinned for elements of another property?

Secret Lair Baseball Cards

New 29 Aug 2023 Asked by atournamentoflies 45 Comments

I’m loving the Secret Lair baseball cards and I’m hoping it does well so maybe more will be coming in the future! High five to whoever came up with the idea to do them!

I’ll pass along the high five. I agree they’re pretty cool.

Nonfoil Options Query

New 16 Aug 2023 Asked by kynelan-mdw 19 Comments

For the Secret Lair Commander decks that come out, why don't you have an option of nonfoil versions? I saw the bonus card for the Angel deck and would love it for my Borderless Modern deck but it is foil! Do you have plans for making these foil only cards available in non foil?

My best guess is there isn’t enough demand for both, but I can pass the note along.

Walking Dead Card Design

New 25 Jul 2023 Asked by clarknes 36 Comments

Can I request a podcast on designing the walking dead cards and what it is like to design for a UB Secret Lair? I know you recently did one on LoTRs but I’m curious what it was like from your perspective and with the secret lair component.

I can add it to the “short list”.

Xantcha Character Misrepresentation

New 16 May 2023 Asked by jtfr96 53 Comments

Minor complaint that I know you have no control over, but a recent ad for the secret lair with Xantcha completely got her backstory wrong and labeled her a villain. As a massive Vorthos who's favorite character is her, it really did bug me to see her first public reference in years depict her wrong even if it was so minor. It really seems to cheapen the wonderful work Lynn Abbey did with that mostly forgotten novel

I’ll pass along the note.

Secret Lair DFCs Downside

New 15 Feb 2023 Asked by amateurauteur 31 Comments

I was talking about Secret Lair cards when I talked about making them DFCs.

Having the Secret Lair cards be double-sided with each version on one side would be seen as a downside by a lot of people.

Secret Lair Branding Expansion

New 11 Nov 2022 Asked by mertag770 25 Comments

Mark, can you shed any light on why the Secret Lair branding is being used on promos that can't be purchased via Secret Lair?

The Secret Lair brand (focused on how the cards look) is being expanded.

Retro Frame Excitement

New 30 Oct 2022 Asked by alexgids442 67 Comments

To offer a counterpoint, the Bother's War commander decks being completely in retro frame made then an instant preorder for me.

I think there’s a little confusion about the point I was making the other day. The complaints I’m getting aren’t “this product shouldn’t exist.” There’s clearly an audience excited for them, and the goal of design is to make products that inspire and excite some portion of the audience which these Commander decks with retro frames are doing an amazing job at. The issue being raised is more this. Alternate frames are great. It’s cool that there are different aesthetics for cards and players can opt into the look they like. Magic, though, should have a unified default that players can always have some access to. To some players continuity of look is an important aesthetic choice, so they want to always have the ability to access the default version. That’s the issue being raised. It’s a similar issue to another recent complaint I’ve been hearing about the Secret Lair Countdown Kit. Let the players choose whether cards are foil or not. Not having control over that is disconcerting for a bunch of players.

Inclusion of WH40K Cards in 'The List'

New 13 May 2022 Asked by sladeweston 59 Comments

Good afternoon Mark, I'm not one of those people who is against WH40K being in magic, I think it's a great way to bring in new people. However, for me personally, some of those cards are a bit too sci-fi for me to want to slot them into my existing commander decks. That being said, I've very excited about what I've seen so far. So I wanted to know, are there plans to include these cards in "The List" similar to how you did for the Stranger Things SL?

We are able to create Magic versions if the need arises, but only the Secret Lair cards have planned Magic versions.

Feedback on Friends Forever Cards

New 05 May 2022 Asked by fuddlesthegatekeeper 37 Comments

hi mark! so im not a big fan of stranger things so i didnt take too much stock in the secret lair when it came out. but i wanted to voice that i LOVE the friends forever cards, now that i can get them in innistrad flavor! i get the issues with multicolor partner and i think its the perfect way to control power level while still enabling choice. Do you have enough data yet to know if we can expect more effects like this?

The future of partner is mostly going to be partnering with specific subsets.

Warhammer Commander Decks Query

New 23 Mar 2022 Asked by gr0uch 42 Comments

With regards to the warhammer commander decks. As a longtime WH fan I’m incredibly excited but was wondering, does the “in universe versions released about 6 months after” rule for the universes beyond cards apply to the presumably warhammer themed commander precon exclusive cards?

It applies to Secret Lair Universes Beyond cards. We do reserve the right to make a Magic version of any Universe Beyond card, but we’ve only promised to do the Secret Lair ones.

Naming for Stranger Things Cards

New 07 Mar 2022 Asked by startthat 38 Comments

Just wanted to put out my two cents. I really like the stranger things cards and I have the the secret lair (and might look in to collecting the instead versions to because the Cecily art is really sweet) but I think I would prefer it if the cards had both names on them for sld and the in universe list cards for future UB. Love the work you guys do!

I believe neither card can have both names for licensing reasons. Again, I’ll stress that anything remotely complex with different names but identical mana costs and rules text is almost always the same card, especially on legendary cards. The information is in the collector number with the Magic versions of Secret Lair cards from other IPs.

Transitioning Silver-Bordered Cards

New 05 Mar 2022 Asked by suigenyukiouji 28 Comments

"If an acorn card or an old silver border card later becomes possible in black border/main magic, are you more likely to just create a new card, or reuse the secret lair equivalency tech? We haven’t done it (yet), so that discussion has not happened." The Cheese Stands Alone was nearly 1:1 reprinted as a black border card in Barren Glory.

We clearly can just make a new card with a new name. The question is can we say an silver-bordered card is no longer silver-bordered and now Eternal legal? We haven’t done it, but that’s the hypothetical I was discussing.
