Skullclamp

Downside Mechanic Perception

New 02 Jun 2023 Asked by crackmore 44 Comments

If having any downsides at all made people stop using the Ring Tempts You mechanic, how can "Power at a Price" continue to be such a common theme in black and to a lesser extent Red cards? by that same logic Skullclamp and Faithless Looting never would have made it through testing yet they ended up played enough to deserve bans.

Players treat one-of downside cards differently than they treat downside mechanics.

Colorless Card Drawing

New 10 Jan 2020 Asked by stunstacker 45 Comments

Dawn of Hope and Mentor of the Meek have been regarded as colour pie breaks, however there are colourless cards that can much more reliably draw cards than pretty much any white card. Classics like Staff of Nin and Skullclamp but also recent things more inline with modern colour philosophy like Arch of Orazca and Endless Atlas. Why is mono brown allowed to draw cards but white can't?

Colorless cards can do things colors can’t (like say destroy enchantments). We just have to be careful what rate we set them at.

Skullclamp Creature Scenario

New 31 Dec 2019 Asked by astralzucchini 36 Comments

if you turn skullclamp into a creature (via something like ensoul artifact) and have out a goblin haberdasher, does the skullclamp gain menace?

No, the Skullclamp is not wearing a hat. Yes, it is a hat, but that’s not what the Habberdasher cares about.

Future Impact Uncertain

New 07 Sep 2019 Asked by rekian 48 Comments

Will Throne of Eldraine feature a game-changing and deeply impactul card in the long run? Eg. Snapcaster Mage, Skullclamp, Cryptic Command, Force of Will... Just cards that stand the test of time and become all-time most widely played and rememered cards.

Only time will tell.

Design Mistakes Perspective

New 06 Aug 2019 Asked by beeblesoftheblindeternities 84 Comments

What are your thoughts on design "mistakes?" Cards like Skullclamp, Smuggler's Copter, and Hogaak that famously warped formats? Do you think of them as lessons in good and bad design and cautionary warnings of what not to do, or do you see them more as successful and well-designed cards that simply don't belong in a certain format?

I think Magic would be less fun if R&D never took risks. Taking risks means the occasional card breaks.

Banned Cards Costing Insight

New 19 Nov 2017 Asked by guijardim-blog1 72 Comments

Mark, quick break from Unstable. Could you ask one of the developers who write for daily mtg to do an article dedicated to correctly costing cards that are banned/restricted in Modern/Legacy/Vintage, now in hindsight? I am very curious to know what would be an acceptable cost for Skullclamp :-)

I can suggest the topic to Melissa.

Last Minute Card Changes

New 20 Apr 2017 Asked by ironchefravnica 46 Comments

"Has there ever been a time where a card was changed last minute before the set was finalized?" - "It’s happened a few times." - Isn'tthat what happened with Jace the Mind Sculptor?

Skullclamp is a better example. It was changed from +1/+1 to +1/-1 just before we signed off on the set.

Skullclamp Legalization

New 01 Apr 2017 Asked by shyflops 45 Comments

How do you feel about the recent annoucement that Skullclamp will be made legal in all formats?

I’m the one who pushed for it. Solitaire Commander has gotten a bit boring.

Skullclamp Development Story

New 23 Jun 2016 Asked by ared-jay 91 Comments

Can you tell us the story about how skullclamp made it through r&d play testing?

It got changed from +1/+1 to +1/-1 late in the process. +1/+1 tested okay, so how could making it “worse” hurt? Not development’s finest hour. Design has had our share of screw-ups too. We just have development checking our work to catch things.

Cube UN-cards Suggestions

New 28 Oct 2015 Asked by luckylooter 35 Comments

I'm adding a few UN-cards to my cube, which is basically just focused on being fun and powerful limited cards. Rancor and Skullclamp are probably the best cards in it. I've added Who/What/When/Where/Why and Booster Tutor (Cube packs only), are there any others that come to mind as good additions?

Suggestions?

Card Design Power

New 05 Apr 2015 Asked by oishsaysfroggy 31 Comments

you’re known to have designed the most broken cards of anyone after Garfield (although may be you’ve caught up to him at this point, I forget :)) My question is, roughly what share of those cards did you design broken and roughly what share did development break, a la skullclamp?

I passed Richard with the most banned or restricted cards with Mirrodin. (Not a great accolade.) Design isn’t responsible for costs so the power level isn’t something we set.

Development Missteps

Definitely Skullclamp.

Of all your designs, which one got most messed up by development being clever?

Skullclamp's Future

New 21 Nov 2014 Asked by notheremaybe 26 Comments

With realising you are not a developer, but where is Skullclamp on the storm scale of standard? I would hazard a 9.99

It’s as 10 as they get.

Carnival of Souls

New 20 Jul 2014 Asked by aazadan 27 Comments

I saw you say Carnival of Souls was a failure of design. If it makes you feel better it's a card in my 5c casual deck alongside Young Pyromancer, Lingering Souls, Skullclamp, Cabal Therapy, Blood Artist, Thoughtseize, Dismember, Gush, Fastbond, and others like Ponder and Brainstorm.

A lot of people spoke up professing their fondness for Carnival of Souls. Mudhole, not so much.

Skullclamp in Standard

New 25 May 2014 Asked by didtheresearch-deactivated20150 48 Comments

Could we ever see Skullclamp reprinted in a Standard environment? I mean, it's not that much worse than Counterspell.

I’m not a developer and even I know that’s not true.

Notable Card Designs

New 14 Feb 2014 Asked by liahzagarl 27 Comments

What fifteen cards that you designed stand out most to you then?

You know how I say I can only answer questions I can answer quickly. This is not one of them. I have designed thousands of cards. I’m sure the box would have Maro and Look at Me, I’m the DCI. The immediate ones that jump to mind are Doubling Season and Mindslaver. Yawgmoth’s Will, Yawgmoth’s Bargain, Tinker, Skullclamp, Kiki Jiki, Scroll Rack, Opalescense, Humility… the list goes on and on.

Worst Developed Cards

New 27 Jan 2013 Asked by ugmadness-blog 15 Comments

Is Hermit Druid the worst developed card in the history of Magic? I think Druid actually beats Tolarian Academy in brokenness.

Oh, there is much worse developed cards. Development, for example, took a non-broken Skullclamp and made it broken. : ) (They changed +1/+1 to +1/-1 thinking it was cute.)

Development of Broken Cards

New 04 Dec 2012 Asked by incendiaryspade 6 Comments

Do broken cards ala skullclamp Jace, the mindsculptor, stoneforge mystic, get changed in development much? I know the dredge mechanic did, but i was just wondering if design handed off jace, design nerfed it a bunch and it was still awesome, or if they were like, "oh, thats good but not broken" or if they made it stronger.

Development goes over every card with a fine tooth comb. That part of their job to make sure everything is balanced.
