Trolley Problem and Red Behavior

New 07 Jul 2024 Asked by jeffgfree 15 Comments

When you answered a question with a similar premise to the trolley problem in your 2018 Colorful Replies article, you gave Red's answer as 'I reject the premise. I save all five people.' In the answer you gave recently, that changed to 'save the people you personally care the most about'. Is the difference in answer due to changes in how the colors behave since that article, or due to some other factor? Like, I could see Red giving that reply but focusing on saving those they care about.

There’s a difference between what I would answer about red and how red would answer about red. I take the constraint of the question as a given, while red does not.

Red Double Tokens

New 13 May 2024 Asked by j-waffles 22 Comments

Could we see red double creature tokens if they go away at EOT?

If we did it, that’s the most likely way. It would obviously also give them haste.

Red's Token Doubling

New 12 May 2024 Asked by berryjon-patternrecognition 20 Comments

If/When: Red getting a Sorcery that allows them to make double tokens for the rest of the turn, a sort of one-shot Doubling Season or Anointed Procession?

If. I could see red doubling damage, or something else very red, but token making is not primary in red.

Red's Impulse Reanimate Potential

New 02 Jul 2022 Asked by decaffeinatedparadisemaker 39 Comments

Impulse draw (exile from the top of your library and you may play this card until end of (this/next) turn) is a pretty common thing to see red doing these days. However, could red do impulse reanimate (exile target card from your graveyard. You may play that card until end of (this/next) turn)?

It misses the randomness of top of library.I do think red can reanimate creatures if they exile at end of turn (or if they would go to the graveyard).

Speculating Red Impulse

New 11 Nov 2021 Asked by rivercrab 29 Comments

With Wish, we see Red "impulse drawing" specific cards. Could Red have an "impulse" library tutor, or an "impulse" Impulse?

With a few rare exceptions, we don’t like red being aware of what it’s going to get.

Selesnya Stealing Creatures Possibility

New 29 Jul 2021 Asked by blind42-blog 58 Comments

Speaking of new angles for Selesnya to explore, we see red and blue get lots of cards that take control of your opponent's things. Usually by force. Selesnya (or Abzan?) seems like it's very willing to "take in" those which other colors might not tolerate. Would there be any world where a white-green effect would allow you to get your opponent's creatures to join your side? Perhaps when their controller is seen throwing their other friends under the bus and using them as fodder?

Stealing creatures is primary blue, secondary red, tertiary black. Green and white are the two colors that don’t do it. (Preacher and the Preacher callback are both breaks.)

Possible Red Angel in Kaldheim

New 21 Dec 2020 Asked by glimmermoon 57 Comments

So I find it wierd that we didn't see red angels seeing as they tend to be red white, so may I get a maybe on a red angel in kaldhiem?

Angels are white and black in Kaldheim.

Faithful Assassins Perspective

New 30 Apr 2020 Asked by birdofablackfeather 36 Comments

"I can see red and green ninjas, but white ninjas seem like an odd fit." The loyal ninja faithfully serving his lord sounds a bit white, doesn't it?

Assassins being loyal doesn’t really make them white. : )

Expanding Ninja WUBRG Tribe

New 30 Apr 2020 Asked by bcrossfire 46 Comments

Could you see Ninjas being a WUBRG tribe? Each color has effects that work well with a Ninja flavor, and barring the Ninjutsu keyword, you can also push Flash in the tribe to reflect its sneakiness. Obviously UB would still be the top Ninja color pair, but I think Ninjas in RGW could work too.

I can see red and green ninjas, but white ninjas seem like an odd fit.

Art and Music Association

Are art and music heavily red? If yes, could we see red lean into it in future sets?

All colors have art. Red is the color most likely to have artists.

Red Sacrificing Enchantments

New 17 Feb 2020 Asked by jjustin1379 27 Comments

Will we see red play around in sacrificing enchantments in sets outside of theros?

Probably not. It’s something for red to do in enchantment heavy sets.

Future Ninja Cards

New 29 Jan 2019 Asked by myswimmingfurybouquetstuff 64 Comments

Can we get more ninjas? They don't need to have ninjutsu, as long as they feel like Ninja's. Would they stay U/B?

I’m sure more Ninjas will allow themselves to be seen eventually. I think they’re base blue/black, but I could see red Ninjas.

Multicolor Symbol Guide

New 25 Aug 2018 Asked by beautifulboodle 268 Comments

Hi Mark! I have no clue how the symbols work on multicolor cards, since they don't go in the typical WUBRG order. How and why are they ordered the way they are? (Example of my confusion: Commander 2016's commanders.)

Here’s the trick to remember three color mana order. First, learn the two color ordering: WU, UB, BR, RG, GW, WB, UR, BG, RW, GU For arcs, the color with two allies sits in the middle and connects to its two allies as the two color mana pair is written. For example, let’s take Bant (white, blue and green). White is the color with the two allies, so it goes in the middle. If you look at the two color pairs, you’ll see green comes before white (GW) and blue comes after (WU). That means Bant is written as GWU. For wedges, the color with two enemies sits in the middle and connects to its two enemies as the two color pairs is written. For example, let’s take Mardu (white, black and red). White is the color with two enemies so it goes in the middle. If you look at the two color pairs, you’ll see red comes before white (RW) and black comes after white (WB). That means Mardu is written RWB. I hope that helps.

Red/White Control Possibility

New 09 Aug 2017 Asked by aureliathewarleader 43 Comments

Do you think it is feasible to see red/white control in the future? I've loved the recent additions to red such as harsh mentor, white often gets death and taxes-like effects such as leonin arbiter and the new alms collector, and red white control decks such as modern sun and moon exist. Is it possible to combine these two aspects of these colors?

I think red/white control is possible.

Eldrazi Identity

New 17 May 2017 Asked by bloodstonegoth 35 Comments

But a card with a red cost IS red, unless another mechanic says otherwise. This is true for all mechanics, so you can't say a defender isn't expected to be a good blocker because evasion exists. People don't see red Devoid card as colorless, they see them as "red with this funny tag".

The identity of the Eldrazi was they were strange aliens that didn’t function like normal creatures. We were trying to do something that tied them together mechanically (and connect to the blocks before and after) and felt weird. The feeling weird was a conscious choice.

Color Identity

New 23 Jun 2016 Asked by ricardolongo 38 Comments

"Why is it so important that spells with red in their mana cost are Red 100% of the time? It’s just an odd place to draw a line in the sand." It's not an odd place at all, Mark. The mana cost is the established indicator of color. You see red on the mana cost, you'll instinctively assume the card is red. It's human nature. And we know what you say about human nature and game design. (Note: I actually don't dislike devoid.)

People often misquote me about human nature. Use human nature when you’re not trying to cause dissonance. When you want things to feel natural and correct. But when you *are* trying to create dissonance, when the point is to make something feel alien and foreign (like say the Eldrazi), that’s the perfect time to go against the grain of human nature. We wanted the Eldrazi spells to feel “off” and “unnatural”.

Red Emotion Representation

New 15 Nov 2015 Asked by vesuvius007-blog 39 Comments

We usually see red represent passionate emotions like anger and love. Is it also the color of dispassionate emotions like sadness? If so, why don't we see that more?

Red more tends to be the emotions that evoke action. We usually see things like sadness and depression represented on Black cards.

Red Copying Mechanic

New 30 Sep 2014 Asked by emu-on-the-loose 25 Comments

Can we see red's copying move out of rare and, for that matter, out of its limitation to instants and sorceries?

If you notice even in blue, we’ve been moving copying to higher rarities.  If red copies permanents it would only be for the turn.

Red's Damage Potential

New 13 Sep 2014 Asked by borosdrunkard-deactivated202401 25 Comments

Moving forward, how likely is it that we'll see Red dealing a fixed percentage of damage to a creature or player instead of a fixed number? i.e. half of a total rounded up/down vs 1 or 2. Is it something red is capable of doing, if the cost is high enough?

It’s not something we’ve tried in red. There’s a chance we could. The biggest issue is complexity but it could in theory be done at higher rarities.

Chaos Warp Color

Blue/red.
