Potential Gift Ability Tweak

New 24 Jul 2024 Asked by quantext 2 Comments

Could the gift mechanic work as a triggered ability instead of something solely done on cast? Such as "when this creature attacks, you may Gift a Food."

I don’t know if the current version of gift can do that, but as it’s a cost, I assume we could tweak things to make that work. Just a hunch though. I’m not the Rules Manager.

Card Effect Misinterpretation

New 04 Jul 2024 Asked by noahmatthews1399 4 Comments

"The printed text doesn’t allow you to do what you think it does. You can’t draw more cards than energy you spend."Shouldn't it say something like "if you do pay X" ? The way it reads to me is: I'll say X is 60 energy. I may pay X. I choose not to pay X. I'll draw 60 cards because X=60.

The rules are not my area of expertise, but I’ve talked with Jess Dunks, the Rules Manager. The card works as written. Is there a better way to template it to lessen confusion? Sure, and that’s something they’re looking at, but the card doesn’t need to change to work in the rules as intended (you can’t draw more cards than energy you spent).

Rangeling Rules Issue

New 02 May 2024 Asked by delicateturtleangel 27 Comments

Hi Mark!I understand Rangeling meaning simply "This card is every land type." causes rule problems (granting basic land types overwrite the card abilities), but wouldn't adding "in addition to its other types." at the end fix it? Or am I missing something else? Thanks!

My guess is no, because when we were having conversations with the Rules Manager about which Unfinity cards worked in the rules, he would have said “it’s legal if we just add these six words.”

Valki and Tibalt Mechanics

New 05 Apr 2024 Asked by armchairjj 35 Comments

hey Mark, if I plot Valki am I able to cast Tibalt on a later turn?

This is an educated guess, but I believe no. The spell you plotted is what you have to cast.EDIT: Okay, I talked to Jess, the Rules Manager. I’m wrong. If you plot an MDFC, you can cast it as either side.

Discord EDH Rules

New 04 Apr 2024 Asked by jdenault 42 Comments

Hi Mark! Lets say I'm playing Discord, Lord of Disharmony in edh, and I pull a random card that is already in my deck, what's your ruling as the silver-bordered rules manager: Should I re-roll to respect the rules of edh (only one card of each per deck), or should I keep (Discord lives in silver bordered land and can do what he wants!). Thanks!

I think the singleton rules are merely a deckbuilding thing, and Discord doesn’t involve that. I say keep the duplicate.

Real Card Line

New 28 Mar 2024 Asked by obazervazi 41 Comments

To illustrate that every person has a different line for what's a "real" Magic card, my line is cards that can't easily be ruled on if you know the comprehensive rules. Most, but not all acorn cards cross the line, as does Panglacial Wurm. I do like a lot of nearly black border acorn cards, and even ask to include Gift Shop and Push Your Luck in my attraction deck. Universes Beyond as a line in the sand does not matter to me.

How do you feel about Tug of War? It wasn’t acorn because of rules (the Rules Manager said we could make it eternal), but because it didn’t feel right being eternal.

Ability Word Fix

New 13 Mar 2024 Asked by gevth 21 Comments

Not a rules manager, but a “fix” for mechanically referencing ability words would be:Step 1) create a keyword that technically does nothing with the same name as the ability word.Step 2) retroactively add the keyword to all cards with the ability word. So instead of “Landfall<\i> - When a land enters draw a card” you’d have “Landfall. When a land enters draw a card”. It would work on a mechanical level. It would create a huuuuge amount of confusion sometime in the future.

Not a great fix. : )

Rosie and Icing Ruling

New 26 Feb 2024 Asked by saltfreevalk 28 Comments

Mark, I have a question for the Acorn Rules Manager. This weekend I was judging The MagicCon: Chicago Cube event and had multiple players draft Rosie Cotton and Icing Manipulator. We ruled that putting a +1/+1 counter on a creature was not the same as creating a token, even if that +1/+1 counter happens to be a food token. What is the official ruling on this interaction?

The token becoming a Food doesn’t happen until its on the creature, so your ruling was correct.

Affinity for Counters

New 18 Jan 2024 Asked by annorax 18 Comments

If or When: "Affinity for +1/+1 counters on permanents you control"

If. I’m not sure affinity can care about non-card attributes. It can care if a card has one or more counters on it, but I don’t think it can care about how many counters. Note: I’m not the Rules Manager, so take this with a grain of salt.

Rules and Acorn Cards

New 18 Nov 2023 Asked by yuleooze 47 Comments

How is it that Staying Power can only be acorn, but Riding the Dilu Horse and Nature's Blessing work in the non-acorn rules? Can the rules manager fix this at their whim, but more pressing things are in the way? I'd prefer the solution of Riding and Blessing getting some errata or being made acorn cards but having Staying Power be un-acorned would also satisfy, so long as these are consistent.

The game is capable of making effects that last for the duration of the game. Staying Power’s issue is the rules have issues with making some temporary effects permanent. As is often the case with weird effects, the rules can handle 99% of the issues, but weird corner cases exist and the rules have to handle all cases.

Delayed Card Releases

New 16 Oct 2023 Asked by j-waffles 29 Comments

Can you tell us any examples of cards you’ve designed, that the rules manager has signed off on, but it took a long time to find the right set to finally be put in?

Mindslaver is the one that jumps to mind. I designed it for Tempest, but it didn’t see print until Mirrodin.

Cipher Variant Proposal

New 29 Sep 2023 Asked by tqmurdock 36 Comments

If you took another look at cipher and decided to add a variant where some effects would be cast at next upkeep instead of when damage is done, do you think (with caveat that your not the rules manager) it might be possible to just redefine cipher with the two options, or would that be a different mechanic?

That would be a different mechanic. We have discussed it.

Unusual Combat Mechanics

New 07 Sep 2023 Asked by obazervazi 34 Comments

In a world where the rules manager lets you use Last Strike and Firstest Strike, how often would you actually use them?

I don’t think that often. Last Strike is a pretty big drawback. I think we might use triple strike a bit.

Rules Wordiness

New 30 Aug 2023 Asked by watdattho 58 Comments

Re: Battles have more baked-in rules than Auras or Sagas.I feel this isn't quite true. While Battles have more individual rules, I feel this is more a rules manager preference (since a lot of newer things added to the rules seem to separate each sentence into a new shorter subrule, whereas older rules like auras, probably written by someone else, tend to just add those further points as new sentences under one big rule). In actual real "How many words does it take to make Auras and Battles work?" terms though, it takes 1305 words of baked-in Comp Rules to make Auras work, while it only takes 638 words of baked-in Comp Rules to make Battles work (less than half that of Auras).I'll concede Sagas are surprisingly short at 301 words!

Auras were created before Sixth Edition rules, so it’ wasn’t designed to fit the rules, the rules were designed to fit it. That ends up being a lot wordier. Note wordiness and complexity are correlated, but different things.

Panglacial Wurm Design Space

New 28 Aug 2023 Asked by graymerchantsmonomyth 25 Comments

If the Panglacial Wurm ability worked in the rules and didn't scare the rules manager, do you think there's much design space in it?

Not a lot.

Black-Border Rangeling Feasibility

New 14 Aug 2023 Asked by doopboopdoop 29 Comments

Could rangeling without basic land types possibly be made in black border?

It would be possible, I believe, but note I’m not the Rules Manager.

Panglacial Wurm Rules

New 13 Aug 2023 Asked by mysticleviathan 86 Comments

Which rules manager approved Panglacial Wurm? I don’t understand how it works within the rules.

Don’t tell anyone, but I don’t think it does.Rules Managers juggle a lot, and it’s easy to miss something.

Time Lord Typing

New 23 Jul 2023 Asked by 1for3ban 51 Comments

Just adding to the opinions on the Doctor Who decks, I wish Time Lord was Time-Lord instead.

One of the important things when making an Universes Beyond product is staying true to your source material. Time Lord is never hyphenated, so we wanted to respect that. We did work with the rules manager, and the only thing we gave up was ever having Time or Lord be a creature type by itself. (Lord was removed as a creature type in the Grand Creature Type update many years ago.)

Delve Rules Adjustment

New 20 Jun 2023 Asked by patjamma 36 Comments

Hello Mark, do the rules support Delving only certain card types? ie Delve Instants?

I believe it would require rewriting delve, but my gut (note not a rules manager) is it’s possible.

Unexpected Rules Solutions

New 24 May 2023 Asked by pascal314 27 Comments

Hi Mark. My birthday was a couple of days ago. You've occasionally mentioned ideas you've had that made the rules manager's eye twitch. But can you tell a story about something you thought for sure wouldn't work out, and then the rules manager came back and said it could be done?

I was worried when first working with mutate that it wouldn’t work out in the rules.
