Appreciation for Salvation Swan

Restoration Angel is one of, if not my favorite Magic card, so can you give high fives to the people involved in making Salvation Swan.

Can do.

Pioneer Card Reprints

New 24 Dec 2019 Asked by coatsville 45 Comments

Is R&D actively looking to add good, safe build around reprints like Restoration Angel, Ezuri Renegade Leader, Elvish Archdruid, and maybe even Snapcaster mage to add to the Pioneer card pool? I love modern and WANT to love Pioneer, but it feels so watered down and missing some fun and powerful (yet not broken) cards like the ones above. A) are you actively looking for opportunities to reprint? B) are they more likely to happen in a core set (doesn’t care about a card’s plane) or return sets?

We’ll keep making cool new cards and some of them will be build-arounds, but a format half the size of another format will definitionally be of a weaker power level.

Spell Flickering Complexity

New 23 Dec 2016 Asked by aqueous88 15 Comments

I really like how the blink/flicker effect works in white (Restoration Angel is a marvelous card). Has there ever been any consideration to allow these abilities to target creatures and spells you control?

Flickering spells would not be worth the confusion and rules issues.

Restoration Angel Mechanics

New 23 Mar 2015 Asked by fatecalling-deactivated20180130 27 Comments

Was there a reason why Restoration Angel should not flicker angels?

Powerwise she couldn’t flicker herself so we decided to solve the problem with a flavorful tweak keeping her from messing with other angels.

Restoration Angel Trivia

New 20 Jun 2014 Asked by vgtaochris 21 Comments

HI MaRo, Today, is my birthday, what Trivia can you give me on my favorite creature ever Restoration Angel? :D

Avacyn Restored had both an angel theme and a flickering theme so I decided to mix the two together and luckily, development pushed the card making it the card it is today. Happy Birthday!

Flicker Effects Color Pie

New 27 Jan 2014 Asked by oscabriel 11 Comments

Are flicker/blink effects (à la Restoration Angel) securely in white's slice of the color pie, or does it bleed into any other colors at all (namely blue)?

Flickering, as we call it, is in both white and blue.

Exiling Creatures Mechanic

New 27 Dec 2013 Asked by peppermintlarry-s 9 Comments

Has exiling a creature (or anything) and returning it to the battlefield at the end of the turn (Venser, Flickerwisp) been replaced by immediately returning it to the battlefield (Cloudshift, Restoration Angel) or are both abilities still valid for card designs?

Both are still valid although we don’t tend to do both versions within th same set.

Stocking Tiger Flicker Effect

New 06 Dec 2013 Asked by truenamenemesis 8 Comments

What happens to the booster pack placed under Stocking Tiger if it is flickered by Restoration Angel, or other related effects? Do you need to replace it with a second sealed booster? Does the original booster cease to exist, or can I open it anyway?

The sealed booster pack goes back to where it came from (still sealed) and when Stocking Tiger comes back you get a sealed booster which could be the one you just had under it.

Creature Type Themes

New 31 Oct 2013 Asked by bestquestion-blog 13 Comments

"... creature type matters is linear". I hate to disagree with you here Maro, but Extinction, Baneslayer Angel, Rival's Duel, Rend Flesh, Urgent Exorcism, Engineered Plague, Victim of the Night, Consuming Bonfire, An-Zerrin Ruins, Callous Oppressor, Riptide Shapeshifter, Avacynian Priest, Restoration Angel, etc, etc, etc, are not linear. I agree ~99% of the ones you make are, but I don't see why 'type' is any more intrinsic than 'non-type', or 'share' is any more basic than 'don't share'.

The fact that most of your examples are linear makes my point. : )

Flash in Red Cards

New 04 Mar 2013 Asked by thalugor 2 Comments

If you guys gave Restoration Angel Flash you could give Red Snapcaster Mage Flash.

White is secondary in flash, but red is tertiary so yes we could give it to red (and we occasionally do).

Dragon Design Approach

New 06 Feb 2013 Asked by hotfurrystuds-deactivated201812 15 Comments

If the reason dragons are included in every set is because they're the most-demanded creature type, then how come nearly every one that Wizards makes is overcosted and unplayable? As compared to, say, angels -- most of the angels printed have use in constructed (Restoration Angel, Sublime Archangel, Angel of Serenity, etc.)

Perhaps the target audience of dragons isn’t the tournament player.  Also, we have made a few constructed dragons over the years. For example, Kai Budde became world champion with one (Covetous Dragon).

Good Cards Article Idea

New 24 Nov 2012 Asked by kaokun 13 Comments

Your "why we make bad cards" articles have been great. Based on the recent complaints about Thragtusk, Snapcaster Mage and Restoration Angel maybe you should do a "why we make good cards" article too? : )

I’ve had a similar thought. It’s on the “short” list.

Development vs Design

New 24 Nov 2012 Asked by grapeshot 4 Comments

Can you promise to never print cards like Restoration Angel, Snapcaster Mage, Thragtusk? If you have to print them, could you make the mana costs more realistic like you do to all the much worse, and much harder to cast cards like Ash Zealot, Geralf's Messenger, Hellrider? Power level vs Mana cost is really unbalanced and biased it feels.

You are asking development request of a designer. Costing’s not my gig.

Angel Clause Reasoning

New 08 Nov 2012 Asked by quillypen 6 Comments

Now that we've seen Angel of Serenity, was Restoration Angel's unusual "non-Angel" clause put in with AoS in mind? Flickering AoS with its ability on the stack would be brutal indeed.

“Non-angel” was put on with Restoration Angel in mind.

Origins of Restoration Angel

New 08 Oct 2012 Asked by m-o-o-n-that-spells-jon-deactiv 8 Comments

Who was responsible for Restoration Angel? It is by far my favorite card.

I’m pretty sure it was me as I was the one who pushed the flicker theme hard for Avacyn Restored.

Innistrad Block Power

New 24 Aug 2012 Asked by grapeshot 20 Comments

Can we ban Innistrad block from all constructed formats? The lack of respect for power level ruins the game. Restoration Angel, Snapcaster, Delver, Huntmaster, all make me never want to play any format they are legal at this point.

If I had to rank blocks based on power level, I’m pretty sure Innistrad doesn’t even break the Top Five.

Future Game Mechanics

New 25 Jul 2012 Asked by brokengaming 4 Comments

Based on some local mutterings, I get the feeling that enter the battlefield/leaves the battlefield effects are the next big thing. Especially with Restoration Angel suddenly seeing all kinds of play. Are we going to see quite a bit more of this sort of effect?

Ever since New World Order (starting in Shards of Alara) we’ve been doing many more “enter the battlefield” and “dies” effects.

Land Destruction Dilemma

New 10 Jul 2012 Asked by drdresden 4 Comments

Rather often you say that "Land destruction is unfun, so we weakened it a bit." (paraphrased.) Why then do you keep printing Acidic Slime? A Stone Rain for 1 more mana with an additional target option and a 2/2 deathtouch body seems like its too good, especially with flicker effects running around. It's not uncommon at my LGS to get completely blown out by Acidic Slime+Restoration Angel+Phantasmal Image starting on turn 3 or 4. At least Stone Rain is harder to copy.

One more mana means a lot when we’re talking about land destruction. EDIT: It’s been correctly pointed out that Acidic Slime is two more mana.

Prerelease Promo Strategy

New 09 Jul 2012 Asked by aazadan 0 Comments

Part of making a prerelease experience the best possible though is people getting useful cards. I'm not going to argue it needs to be the chase mythic of the set, but a prerelease promo should be something good that will see play and makes people think about possibilities the set offers. Restoration Angel was a fantastic pick in my opinion.

We try to pick cards that thematically make sense that we believe some portion of the audience at the event will enjoy. Note that the tournament playing crowd is sometimes that audience and sometimes not as we change it up.

White's Weaknesses

New 06 Jul 2012 Asked by obvus-blog 4 Comments

Colours are defined by their weaknesses. What are White's weaknesses? They have fantastic small creatures (Thalia), midrange (Mirran Crusader, Restoration Angel), and fatties (Elesh Norn). They tend to have multiple board-control spells at a time (Terminus, DoJ, Planar Cleansing), and they can stop any kind of permanent (O-Ring's most common answer? Another O-Ring). They have Flying, First Strike, and Lifelink. They can play a slow control game or fast aggro equally well. Isn't W too versatile?

White’s reliance on the group while its strength is also its weakness. A single Pyroclasm can wipe out white’s entire army. Also, as I’ve explained, white’s reluctance to kill leaves it open to having the same threats return. White’s game is also very battlefield centric not allowing it to have tools that other colors get.
