Narset and Bria Wording Differences

New 08 Jul 2024 Asked by quantext 5 Comments

Why do Narset, Enlightened Exile and Bria, Riptide Rogue have different wordings for the same effect of giving all your creatures prowess?

Bria is our normal template. My guess is Narset didn’t have the text space to do the normal template, so it did the shorter one.

Prowess Template Reasoning

New 06 May 2024 Asked by raynman37 26 Comments

Hey Mark! I have a design question. When looking at the upcoming Bria, Riptide Rogue from Bloomburrow, the text box reads “Prowess (reminder text)Other creatures you control have prowess”This is something I’ve seen on various cards in recent years. Wouldn’t it save space to have it say “Creatures you control have prowess” rather than breaking them into 2 separate lines?

Enough players have shown to be confused by “All creatures have ______” , that the Standard template is “________ . All other creatures have __________ .”

Future Story Sets

New 07 Nov 2023 Asked by nik-murphy 30 Comments

Hey Mark! I think my birthday question got eaten by the blogatog!
With the success of Brothers War, might we see a similar throwback story set based on the Riptide Project and the resurrection of Slivers?

Sets in the past are possible, but they need enough story and environment to build a whole set around it.

Riptide Pilferer's Color Alignment

New 14 Aug 2023 Asked by wildmagic93 25 Comments

Hi, is riptide pilferer a bend or a break on blue?

It’s probably a break, but if you have them discard and then draw, blue could most likely do that.

Blue Discard Cards Examples

New 01 Sep 2020 Asked by tbjanowski 43 Comments

Dear Mark Note Blue has Amnesia, Dismal Failure, Forget Minamos Meddling, Piracy Charm, (my favorite)Probe with Kicker, Riptide Pilferer. Venarian Glimmer potentially Apathy, Coral Net, Mind Bomb and Trapfinder's Trick are all examples of Blue Discard so, no Black does not have a monopoly on Discard.

You can do the same with non-blue counterspells. Note both lists lean pretty heavily on early Magic.

Unrules Scenario

New 16 Apr 2017 Asked by vasnirada 14 Comments

Unrules question: If I have Yet Another Aether Vortex on the field, and I Griptide the creature on the top of my opponents library, what happens?

Basically nothing happens as it’s already on top of its owner’s library.

Riptide Replicator Complexity

New 02 Aug 2016 Asked by clan-iraq 27 Comments

Doesn't Riptide Replicator break some kind of rule on the complication of using X by using it in two different contexts in the same card

One, it’s a rare and rare cards can be a bit more complicated. Two, X is constant always meaning the same number even if applied multiple ways.

Platypus Nostalgia

New 26 Sep 2014 Asked by keiyakins 50 Comments

When I was young and didn't know the existing creature type rule, I used to name Platypus when I used [[Riptide Replicator]]. Could we see a Platypus in Magic eventually so I can do so again?

Just do it now. I won’t tell anyone.

AEther Vortex Interaction

New 30 Aug 2014 Asked by fistdangerfist 19 Comments

Un-rules question: say I have Yet Another AEther Vortex in play and the top card of someone's library is a creature. If I target the creature with Griptide while it is attacking, is the attack interrupted or is there no effect at all?

There is no effect because the creature is already on top of the library.

Color Identity Shifts

New 05 May 2014 Asked by su92 18 Comments

Time Ebb was blue at first, then you made Excommunicate in white, then said the ability was back in blue with Griptide and Totally Lost. Now we've had Unexpectedly Absent and Quarry Colossus. Is it white again? White and blue?

It’s supposed to be blue.

Leonin on Theros

New 02 Dec 2013 Asked by alexcm4297-blog-deactivated2021 21 Comments

I have noticed that there is a Leonin in the Theros art for Griptide. Are there Leonin on Theros? Is this possibly foreshadowing the arrival of our favorite cat planeswalker?

There are leonin on Theros. I cannot comment on the second question.

Creature Type Themes

New 31 Oct 2013 Asked by bestquestion-blog 13 Comments

"... creature type matters is linear". I hate to disagree with you here Maro, but Extinction, Baneslayer Angel, Rival's Duel, Rend Flesh, Urgent Exorcism, Engineered Plague, Victim of the Night, Consuming Bonfire, An-Zerrin Ruins, Callous Oppressor, Riptide Shapeshifter, Avacynian Priest, Restoration Angel, etc, etc, etc, are not linear. I agree ~99% of the ones you make are, but I don't see why 'type' is any more intrinsic than 'non-type', or 'share' is any more basic than 'don't share'.

The fact that most of your examples are linear makes my point. : )

Laboratory Maniac Origin

New 07 Oct 2012 Asked by pyre89 4 Comments

Hey Maro, I thought you would like to hear that I have now made 3 successful Laboratory Maniac decks (2 for multi-player, 1 for duels), including Wizard Control (Azami and Riptide Director are ridiculous), and Dredge (from the recent duel decks). I guess what I am trying to say is: thank you for making him! Could you tell me who designed him?

My best guess is that it was designed by Graeme Hopkins as it seems like the kind of card he’d design. If not him, it was someone else on the design team (Jenna Helland, Zak Hill or Tom LaPille). I was the last member of the team and I know I didn’t make it.

Repel vs Griptide

New 25 Mar 2012 Asked by drsylvan 1 Comments

Why was Repel reprinted as Griptide? I thought one of the goals of assigning single-word names to classic, simple effects was to be reprinted. This doesn't seem to fall under the Evolving Wilds reasoning that some decks might want copies 5-8.

When we reprint a card, unless it’s 4-of-ness is important we let the creative team decide whether or not that name works in the new environment. If it does, it most often stays. If it doesn’t, it most often changes.

Mechanic Color Identity

New 12 Mar 2012 Asked by fangfabio 0 Comments

9th edition had Time Ebb ("Put target creature on top of its owner's library."), M10 and M11 had Excommunicate, ISD has Grasp of Phantoms and DKA has Griptide. White, blue or both?

We had a meeting about this not too long ago. Put from the battlefield to top of library is a blue thing and not a white thing.
