Can I have birthday trivia on my favorite card Goblin Test Pilot? Also if or when on a reprint

I previewed Goblin Test Pilot in my “Tales from the Pit” comic. The only time, I believe, I’ve ever done that.Happy Birthday!

Wither Mechanic Scale

New 19 Oct 2023 Asked by arborealoctopodes 20 Comments

Hello! I found out about Wither while building my first commander deck (W/R dwarven tribal under Depala, Pilot Exemplar.) and I was curious where Wither is on the Storm scale?
Hope you have an excellent day!

Wither requires -1/-1 counters, so like persist, its return is dependent on a set using -1/-1 counters.

Custom Set Archetypes

New 20 Sep 2023 Asked by spartacusreturned 38 Comments

I'm working on a custom set based on an IP that has eight main characters. Each character maps nicely to a color pair, sometimes with an obvious archetype (e.g., the UW character is a pilot, so a flying archetype is a slam dunk). But that only covers eight out of ten. Do you have any general ideas for how I could approach the remaining two archetypes?

You could capture environment.

Pilot Ability Nickname

New 28 Dec 2022 Asked by lil-cheez 29 Comments

Hey MaRo!
Did you guys have a slang/nickname for the Pilot Ability from Kamigawa? I mean "This creature crews Vehicles as if its power were 2 greater"
My friends called that "pilots really well" but I'd like a shorter term šŸ˜†šŸ˜†šŸ˜†

It got added in set design, so I donā€™t know if there was a nickname for it.

Vehicles for Specific Tribes

New 09 Feb 2022 Asked by shinygreninja 38 Comments

Because I think the other person who asked might not have worded their question very well: do you think we'll ever see vehicles targeted at specific tribes, rather than vehicles that synergize specifically with other vehicles? In the same vein as how there's equipment that synergizes with Knights, there could be a vehicle with a discount from Pilots or an ability gained when crewed by Zombies, right?

I assume that will happen with time.

Creature Types: Bard and Dancer

New 30 May 2020 Asked by bcrossfire 42 Comments

Could you see Bard and Dancer becoming creature types? I could see them being associated with Song and Dance spells respectively, which could feature some kind of performance mechanic that Bards and Dancers add bonuses to, similar to how Pilots provide bonuses when crewing Vehicles.

Bard is more likely than Dancer as itā€™s more fantasy.

Modernized Decks Idea

New 15 Dec 2019 Asked by ninthsword 19 Comments

Can I get a maybe on WotC selling modernized semi-randomized decks? Something more coherent than the original starter decks, but more quirky and challenging to pilot than booster battle packs? Doing my christmas shopping it dawned on me something like that would be a great small, fun gift to give to the Magic players in my life.

Semi-randomized, playable decks is very hard to do.

Request for Commander Playtest

New 30 Nov 2018 Asked by spiritkhan 55 Comments

Can i request that R&D (that don't play commander) play a game and you pilot a mono White deck (each mono colour), just so it gives you hands on experience of the trouble white faces?

Me playing a single game when Iā€™m unused to the format, is going to give me far less information that talking with experienced Commander players about the issue.

Inside R & D Fate

New 29 Nov 2018 Asked by stealthrock12-blog 35 Comments

I know you're not in charge of it but whatever happened to Inside R & D?

Iā€™m not sure. I did record two half hour interviews with different R&D members as a pilot for a new show idea I had (tentatively called ā€œR&D Talesā€). They were streamed on Black Friday on the Magic Twitch channel. One was with Erik Lauer and the other Andrew Veen. Both were about Guilds of Ravnica design. Did any of you see it?

Sequels and Creativity

New 13 Oct 2018 Asked by gary-a-getty 70 Comments

I resumed playing and collecting Magic after a loooong pause With my amazement I found some "Back to". Are You getting sick of the "Hollywood sequel syndrome"? Like Mission Impossible or Fast & Furios, will we have a day a "Ravnica 9"? I am of the idea that to focus a lot on sequels means, in the end, lack of creativity. What do you think?

ā€œThe Empire Strikes Backā€, ā€œReturn of the Kingā€, The Hound of the Baskervilles, ā€œGoldfingerā€, ā€œGodfather, Part 2ā€, ā€œAliensā€, ā€œTerminator 2ā€, ā€œThe Wrath of Khanā€, ā€œThe Road Warriorā€, any television episode that isnā€™t the pilot. Many great works build on previous work. The idea that a work of art that isnā€™t the first time you met a character or world is somehow less creative is simply baloney.

Jhoira's True Role

New 30 Apr 2018 Asked by alldaybreakfasthands 60 Comments

Something been bothering me since the prerelease; Why is Jhoira, Weatherlight Captain an Artificer and not a Pilot?

Because Jhoira is more artificer than pilot.

Jhoira's Subtype

New 27 Apr 2018 Asked by shadowman2099 25 Comments

Did R&D ever consider giving Jhoira the Pilot subtype?

I donā€™t know if that was discussed.

Backdoor Pilots

New 09 Feb 2018 Asked by manacymbal 32 Comments

Hey Mark, you mentioned in a podcast that you watched a lot of pilot episodes while trying to be a writer. Did you ever encounter a ā€œbackdoor pilotā€ where they snuck a pilot for a potential spinoff in a different show? I just encountered one while watching ā€œSupernaturalā€ and it was awful. Just awful.

Iā€™ve seen a lot of backdoor pilots.

Psychographic Identification

New 27 Jul 2017 Asked by defenderofsoma 38 Comments

I've been thinking about psychographics. I think my main motivation for playing is to experience all the possible experiences. I want to pilot all the different decks, and try all the different strategies. I enjoy the intellectual challenge of trying to play "perfectly" but don't really try to master any one thing, I delight in the variety. What am I?

Wanting to experience things is Timmy/Tammy.

No Black Vehicle Enchantment

New 17 Mar 2017 Asked by miztickow 21 Comments

Was there ever a black vehicle enchantment designed for the Kaladesh block like the white/red ones?

No, as red and white had the pilot/Vehicles themes.

Legion TV Show Thoughts

New 03 Mar 2017 Asked by saxtirical 10 Comments

Are you watching Legion? So far I'm four episodes in and I'm finding it interesting more than I'm enjoining it which is a bad sign.

I’ve only seen the pilot so far, but I enjoyed it.

Hanna's Navigator Title

New 26 Feb 2017 Asked by izandai 52 Comments

Hanna's card is Hanna, Ship's Navigator. Sounds like a pilot to me.

The navigator and the pilot are not the same job. Sulu was the pilot of the Enterprise but Checkov was the navigator.

Pilot Inquiry

New 26 Feb 2017 Asked by uroborus-void 33 Comments

On Monday can you ask creative who the pilot of the Weatherlight was?

I would know better than them. I co-created the Weatherlight Saga.

Sisay's Piloting Role

New 26 Feb 2017 Asked by braveswordwielder 24 Comments

Sisay totally piloted the Weatherlight in addition to captaining it -- in addition to the Invasion comic, there's Hull Breach, Captain's Manuever, etc.

Sissy knew how to pilot it and at times did pilot it, but as the one in charge, she had larger concerns most of the time.

Weatherlight Pilot Mystery

New 26 Feb 2017 Asked by cannonspectacle 15 Comments

Re: Sisay being a Pilot. Who was the pilot of the Weatherlight, then? Hannah?

Hanna was the engineer (think: Scotty). We never identified the pilot. I assume Hanna at times piloted the ship.
