Rakdos Destruction Limitations

New 16 Jul 2023 Asked by dwarf-scum 22 Comments

Since red can destroy artifacts and black can now destroy enchantments, could we see a card like reclamation sage or disenchant in rakdos?

Unlikely.

Rakdos Disenchant

New 28 Dec 2022 Asked by armadagon 29 Comments

Since Black can now destroy Enchantments, and Red has always been able to destroy Artifacts, If or When: Rakdos Disenchant?

Unlikely. Black’s enchantment removal is a clear third in utility.

Disenchant's Return

New 01 Nov 2022 Asked by nayon7 31 Comments

I’m surprised to see Disenchant back. I thought there was a push to have that effect in green. Is it because the set is retro? Can you explain how it’s back?

It’s an effect we allow both green and white to have. Green is supposed to be better at it, on average.

Implementing Rare-B-Gone

New 27 Sep 2022 Asked by admiralsmash-blog 33 Comments

Re: Rare-B-Gone, couldn't it work in black border the same way Apocalypse Chime and all the other expansion matters cards do, by caring about the original rarity a card was printed at? That way reprints don't impact its effect.

That requires too much knowledge. For example, without access to a database, do you know the rarity of first printing of cards? Does counter target common spell stop a Disenchant? Or a Counterspell? Or a Lightning Bolt?

Un Rules Question on Artifacts

New 18 May 2022 Asked by mikecarlucci 36 Comments

Hi Mark! Un Rules question: I know Assembled Ensemble is an Un card but how do you determine what is an artifact creature based on the art alone? Does Disenchant from Tempest count? The artificial sliver depicted in the set would imply that. Thanks!

There’s some common sense needed. In the case of Tempest Disenchant, the card show Hanna using Disenchant on a Sliver and the only one it would make sense on is the Metallic Sliver which is an artifact creature. Also, if you check Metallic Sliver, they look the same.

Differentiating Disenchant Effects

New 04 Oct 2021 Asked by heavenlyevan 31 Comments

How do you mechanically differentiate between green and white disenchant effects?

Green overall is slightly better at them, but the base effect is available to both colors. The only differentiation is if it’s used with other effects.

Disparity in Magic Color Pie

New 24 Jan 2021 Asked by berry-maker 56 Comments

Can you understand the playerbases frustration with the colour pie when the arguements against giving some colours the things they need are completely ignored when it comes to giving blue and green even more effects. Blue and green cards that could have been whiteBlue tax like effectsGreen life gainBlue exileGreen exile disenchant

For starters, as I have said numerous times Ravenform is not a precedent. As for the rest. - Green has had life gain since Alpha and in almost every set since.- Blue has had taxing since early Magic (it has dropped to secondary behind white)- Green was the original color to exile artifacts. None of these are new things (save Ravenform, see above) for blue or green.

Asking about Fan-made Cards

New 15 Nov 2020 Asked by myfavoriteflavorisblue 43 Comments

Re fan made cards, I promise I don't intend to toe the line, but sometimes I wonder what level of specifics we're allowed to ask about. Like can I say I want a cheaper disenchant (I do btw) but I can't name a cost? I guess you don't do cost but I don't have another example off the top

You’re allowed to say I want existing Named Spell but at Named Cost. I have little ability to get it to print, but you’re free to tell me.

Tezzeret's Vulnerability to Disenchant

New 16 Apr 2020 Asked by in-response-to-concdeding-blog 35 Comments

So Tezzeret is from Esper, where most (or all not sure) inhabitants are classified as Artifact creatures in addition to another type. So lore-wise, would a Disenchant kill Tezzeret?

Planeswalker-ness supersedes other card type qualities. Karn is also clearly an artifact from a flavor sense.

Sorcery with Flash

New 25 Nov 2019 Asked by futur-sight 24 Comments

Hey Mark, have you considered printing a sorcery with flash, but in a Silver Bordered set? To help with as-fan of say, disenchant, e.c.t It would be a good way to satisfy those that really want it while still adding to a set and not just messing with the player's minds.

Just because we can do something doesn’t mean we should. Box filling for the sale of box filling usually isn’t good design.

Black and Red Removal

New 14 Sep 2019 Asked by chetskolos 16 Comments

Since black now has a form of enchantment removal and red is still good at artifact removal, I'd love to see black and red card that is a variation on Naturalize (or Disenchant). I don't expect the same exact wording, but I do hope for a flavorful card name. Do you think I have long to wait?

Black doesn’t get targeted enchantment removal.

Disenchant and Invoke the Divine

New 26 Jun 2019 Asked by grandarbit3r 25 Comments

Hi. I was looking back at many of your previous answers, including to one of my own questions, regarding Disenchant. You’ve been pretty emphatic about its status. I’d be grateful to hear your thoughts about its inclusion in m20 alongside a strictly worse green “Invoke the Divine”. The presence of both together seem to very much contradict colour pie philosophy that you have cited in multiple previous answers. Thanks as ever for your work and willingness to engage.

When one thing is better than another thing overall that doesn’t mean there’s never a set where another color is slightly better in that one set.

Return of Disenchant

New 18 Jun 2019 Asked by birdopower 26 Comments

Why disenchant has come back? Is destroying artifacts and enchantments now primary in white again?

No, White’s still second best at it.

White vs Green Efficiency

New 09 Feb 2019 Asked by grandarbit3r 28 Comments

Given that White is supposed to only get "Disenchant" effects at higher rarities or less efficiently than Green, could it not be argued that 3-mana instant speed "destroy target artefact or enchantement with upside" like Expose to Daylight of Invoke the Divine is pretty close in terms of efficiency to Naturalize? If mana cost were the only criterion for efficiency then Fragmentize, as another recent print, gets involved in the conversation.

Green supposed to be a little better but it’s not a giant chasm.

Frequency of Card Reprints

New 27 Jan 2019 Asked by youwillneverdiscoverwhoiam 39 Comments

It seems like naturalise gets reprinted in standard-legal sets much more than disenchant. Is there a reason for this? I'd love a disenchant with new artwork.

Green is the color that’s best at “Destroy target artifact or enchantment”, so it gets the stronger version more often.

Disenchant's Absence

New 10 Apr 2018 Asked by hordastroll 35 Comments

Why has the card Disenchant not seen a reprint in a Standard set since 7th Edition? What made the effect to be moved to green in Naturalize? There are still lots of new white card printed that destroy artifacts or enchantments, just not Disenchant itself.

Green is supposed to be primary in the ability, so it and not white are supposed to get the two mana version.

Color Counterspell Distribution

New 15 Mar 2018 Asked by silentone2k 51 Comments

"Counterspells aren’t something we want spread throughout the colors." Per the mechanical color pie article, counterspell is one of very few abilities not shared. Many creatures and enchantments now have etbs that dwarf their body. Why not staple essence scatter to hero's downfall in black or anull to disenchant/naturalize?

Every color is not supposed to have the answer to every problem.

Ice Age Playtest Origins

New 17 Feb 2018 Asked by snowskeleton 25 Comments

I recently picked up an Ice Age play test Disenchant (super thin, white both sides, that sort of thing). Who all would have played with this card during its use? Not sure where to look to find he Ice Age play test team.

The Ice Age design team was who we call the East Coast Playtesters (Skaff Elias, Jim Lin, Dave Petty and Chris Page). Ice Age is early enough that there wasn’t yet a full development process set up, so besides the design.team, I assume Richard and some very early R&D team members playtested it.

Contraption Permanence

New 14 Nov 2017 Asked by light-ways-deactivated20190824 23 Comments

Once a contraption is placed on a sprocket, is it considered a permanent on the battlefield? Can it be targeted and destroyed by, say, Disenchant?

Yes, it is a permanent (an artifact, to be specific) on the battlefield. It can be destroyed just like any other artifact.

Decommission's Color Identity

New 04 Jan 2017 Asked by macgyvercas-deactivated20171221 19 Comments

On Decomission, color me confused. I thought Disenchant type effects weren't White's thing anymore. (By Disenchant type effects, I mean destroy artifact or enchantment at instant speed)

White can do it but usually not as efficiently.
