Instant as Sorcery Supertype?

New 10 Jun 2019 Asked by yandere-sliver 31 Comments

Have you ever thought about making Instant a rules-loaded subtype of Sorcery? Flash could still refer to Instants. And you could cut down the whole sorcery and/or instant stuff you do quite often. And in the rare case you talk about sorceries specifically you can say non-instant sorceries.

Welcome to Blogatog. : )I gave talked at great length that I would have made Instant a supertype if I we started Magic over.

Creative Restrictions

New 25 May 2019 Asked by thewonderdoc-deactivated2020013 21 Comments

What always comes to mind thinking about the lectures you've given all of us is, that restrictions aren't all bad and might (breed creativity) improve the work you're doing. Whenever I lose focus of what I'm doing I go to this lesson cut down my work into parts and restrict what I'm able to do. It's always a magical little helper. Happy Birthday :D

“Restrictions breed creativity” is probably the lesson I’m most associated with.

Library Order Effects Change

New 19 Apr 2019 Asked by jammywk 37 Comments

Hi Mark! Long time reader, first time asker, is there a reason why when cards fun recent sets let you look at the top cards of your library and then put them on bottom, it's in a random order? When arena first came out a lot of the effects let you put them in any order, and I loved looking at the bottom of my deck while my opponent made choices on their turn! Any chance of these effects returning for players like me?

We’re trying to cut down on decisions that potentially can matter but seldom do as it taxes mental energy for minimal gain. We’d rather players focus on things that are more game relevant. So no, I don’t see that changing anytime soon.

Blue Transformation Mechanic

New 08 Mar 2019 Asked by papillon94 32 Comments

Wouldn't having Blue's non-temporary transformation effects be on Auras cut down on the confusion around whether or not Blue has access to "Destroy" effects? While it'd certainly be a downgrade in power, I feel like it'd simplify a number of things and be a better representation of what transforming a creature actually does.

Auras add some extra complication and logistics. We do it occasionally, but it’s not a great answer as a permanent solution.

Cycle Design Process

New 28 Dec 2018 Asked by qalkx 32 Comments

Which is more common; a cycle is designed for a set and is then cut down to just one or two cards; or a card is designed and a cycle is later made based on it?

The latter.

Tribal Effects Limits

New 06 Oct 2018 Asked by ajohnnygoldmain 26 Comments

Do you think we could ever see a Conspiracy/Arcane Adaptation style effect that changes the creature type of your opponent's creatures? Asking for an unhallowed friend.

We’ve cut down on tribal effects that affect the opponent, so it’s possible, but not super likely in the near future.

GDS3 Trials Order

New 17 Feb 2018 Asked by ofhedgehogsandpumpkins 32 Comments

Afternoon, Mark! Any reason the GDS3 Trials were ordered in the way they were, with the essays first and then the multiple choice second? Why did you guys do it the other way around, so people don't have to write essays that might never be read?

There’s a very low bar to take a multiple-choice test. The first trial is actually more about passion and dedication, so that we cut down to people who really care. Note that making the cut to Top 8 requires some good essay answers.

Reducing Human Characters?

New 16 Jun 2017 Asked by kuroxneko97-deactivated20181210 59 Comments

As humans take up way too much space within a set (DTK had more humans than dragons for example), are there any plans to cut down how many humans show up in a set? It's not that I hate humans, but if humans consistently are #1 creature type in any given set that is not Lorwyn/Shadowmoor block it restricts how many tribes that actually NEED support (e.g. Dinosaurs) can be printed in the same set. So, could you maybe try to cut down on humans in favor of non-human creatures?

The problem is the game is predominant played by humans who are wired to like looking at humans. Also, there is s lot more nuance we can do on humans than any other creature type. So, not every set will be as dense with humans as others, but expect humans to play a role on every world.

Un3 Black-Bordered Cards

New 03 Dec 2016 Asked by bloodstonegoth 33 Comments

Have you looked into the possibility of making a part of cards in Un3 black-bordered? Could be both reprints and new cards. They can still be humorous (like Pirates vs Ninjas), but Commander/Cube/Eternal-legal. I think it would allow you to increase the quality and expansiveness of joke cards, since you wouldn't have to play six of them at once.

Un-cards often have a humorous flavor but they are very rarely jokes mechanically in that they are designed for good gameplay not just to get a chuckle and throw away. The problem with putting black border cards in an Un-set is you cut down on the ability to make boundary breaking cards which as we seen we get to make so infrequently. I would want to let a third Un-set be an Un-set, not a normal set with a clown nose on it.

CARDNAME Usage

New 11 Oct 2016 Asked by jimharbor 25 Comments

Mr. Rosewater, why do cards use CARDNAME instead of "this card/creature" outside reminder texts. Wouldn't using "this card" cut down on wordiness? Outside clone and multiple shenanigans I cant see why most cards follow the more wordy version. Especially as text is a limited resource .Thanks for answering our questions sir, have a great week!

“This creature” can often be ambiguous.

Evolutionary Leap Design

New 17 Sep 2016 Asked by areyouwilling 36 Comments

I assume that Evolutionary leap putting things on the bottom randomly was to stop creatureless decks from stacking their deck?

That was part of it. We’re also trying to cut down on decision making that takes time and seldom matters.

Cycle Importance

New 22 Nov 2015 Asked by genderlich-deactivated20211204 30 Comments

How important are cycles when making a set? If you have a cool unique mechanic - like, say, Retreat to Emeria - would you definitely try to make it a cycle for all the colors, or would you be comfortable printing it on its own? ("You" as in the whole design team)

Really important. Cycles are a key part of structuring a set and cementing themes. It’s also a good tool to help cut down on complexity.

Auras and Polymorph

New 23 Jul 2015 Asked by troacctid 21 Comments

How does R&D feel about having blue's polymorph effects be auras? The flavor is obviously way better if you can disenchant the creature to return it to its natural form, and the new "base power and toughness" template should help cut down on the rules confusion that has traditionally plagued such cards.

The flavor’s good but it gets a lot more complicated and wordy. I wouldn’t mind it some of the time but would be hesitant to do it all of the time.

Card Text Efficiency

New 11 Jul 2015 Asked by phelgster 22 Comments

"We could write it out when it matters." Don't you often say you like to cut down on wordiness whenever and wherever you can? "Legendary" is just one word and it's outside of the rules text box.

Saving words is not the only concern. Having to add a line to ten or so cards is worth having legendary not be a drawback

Ferocious Mechanic Design

New 30 Jan 2015 Asked by liampk 22 Comments

Was it ever considered having Ferocious trigger off mana cost, rather than power, to make it more distinct from Naya's mechanic?

Our goal was to match the flavor of Temur not to make it more different from things we’d done in the past. Also, caring about converted mana cost would cut down on much of the interaction ferocious has with the rest of the set. It’s very hard to change converted mana cost.

Tom Riddle's True Colors

New 31 Oct 2014 Asked by monopurplecontraptions 21 Comments

Another question concerning Tom Riddle's colors: Wouldn't he be Grixis, or maybe Rakdos? The character is very selfish and power-hungry, and has extremely little loyalty to anyone else (Black). His default mood seems to be barely contained rage, and he's driven by intense fear of death (Red). He seeks greater understanding of the workings of magic (Blue or U/B). Also, the Death Eaters cut down anyone they see as weak just because they can, which is Black masquerading as Green, not actual Green.

There’s a fine argument that he’s Grixis rather than Sultai.

Strategy Restrictions

New 07 May 2014 Asked by osisucks2000 49 Comments

From all the terminology and concepts you use when discussing game design and Magic in particular "unfun" seems the least thought-out. It feels like an umbrella term used to describe specific (and legal) game strategies deemed undesired for some reason or another. Why deny the viability of, say, land destruction as a strategy and at the same time implement specific hosers to it instead of removing it from the possible pool of ways you can play the game?

You are making a faulty assumption. You assume having as many things costed to be tournament viable as possible make for a more diverse play environment. The opposite is more often true. Certain types of mechanics, such as land destruction, cut down the number of viable options by making things that might thrive without it unusable. In other words, removing things like land destruction leads to a more robust environment.

Card Naming Restrictions

New 28 Sep 2013 Asked by metricaprovince 7 Comments

Are there any words you are not allowed to/hesitant to use in the names of cards, in order to cut down on confusion? (For example, I imagine putting the word "basic" in a card's name could confuse new players.)

We try not to use relevant game terms in card titles.

Hexproof and Evasion Feedback

New 21 Sep 2013 Asked by aceyboyce-blog 28 Comments

You say you "cut down" on the number of hexproof with built in evasion but this is definitly a case of one is too many. I was having a great day at the Pre Release as a red deck full of burn until I ran into the new 3/5 sphynx for 5 with hexproof. Losing to it two times in a row when I had a fist full of burn felt terrible. Burning out a 3/5 is hard enough but when it gains hexproof in response to second burn? Hex and evasion should be on ZERO cards even with "drawbacks" especially at 5 mana.

One of the reasons Hexproof exists is to be an answer to things like burn.

Cycle Complexity Management

New 12 Sep 2013 Asked by cryptrat 7 Comments

Are strict cycles, like the Ordeal cycle, ways you intentionally looked for to cut down on complexity?

Cycles exist for many reasons. Here’s my articles on cycles, “Zen and the Art of Cycle Maintenance”:  http://www.wizards.com/magic/magazine/article.aspx?x=mtgcom/daily/mr28
