Bend or Break

Volatile Stormdrake's Color Pie Classification

New 04 Jun 2024 Asked by zorroaburrito 42 Comments

Is Volatile Stormdrake a break/bend?

No. Let me explain. There are two different types of color pie restrictions. The first is mechanical. Printing the card with the ability is a bend or a break. The second is aesthetic. We like to make colors feel different, so there are some things we don’t do in a color to keep it from stepping on another color. We stopped doing Pongify in blue, not because it was a mechanical issue, but an aesthetic one. We want white removal with a consolation to feel different than blue transformation. Also, we didn’t like the word “destroy” in a blue text box as it confused people (as blue doesn’t destroy permanents). Bleeding into aesthetic territory isn’t a bend or break, so no Volatile Stormdrake isn’t a bend/break.

Green Flying Query

New 27 May 2024 Asked by unmagica 2 Comments

Would you consider "this creature has flying as long as it's untapped" to be a bend or break in green? It's effectively reach unless you have a way to untap it.

Flying isn’t a break in green, but I’m skeptical we’d use that text.

Potential Bend for Healing

More bend than break.

Wild Magic Surge Nature

New 02 Mar 2024 Asked by j-waffles 29 Comments

Is wild magic surge a bend or break? It removes enchantments, but the fact that the replacement will be an enchantment makes me think maybe it’s okay?

We decided red can turn an enchantment into another random enchantment in your deck, although it’s not something we plan to do often.

White's Targeting Options

New 26 Feb 2024 Asked by choco-taco-lover-blog 16 Comments

Could white get "Choose new targets for target spell or ability that targets a creature you control"? Bend or break?

I don’t think white gets that. It can grant a creature it controls protection to save it.

Black's Artifact Removal

New 30 Jan 2024 Asked by stormtide-leviathan 28 Comments

One of black’s major weaknesses is that it can’t remove artifacts. Despite this, it’s gotten cards that say “exile target vehicle” because vehicles are very very similar to creatures, so it’s not much different from its ability to remove creatures. Assuming this is an ability that can be used as precedent rather than a major bend or break, then in that same vein would black removing clues be allowable as an extension of its discard abilities? Or is that a step too much into the artifact-removal direction? If it is too far, what would you say makes it different from the vehicles example?

That’s a step too far.

Blue Spirit Guide Concern

New 26 Dec 2023 Asked by battle-of-wits 23 Comments

"Would a blue spirit guide that can only cast instants and sorceries be a bend or break?""It’s somewhere between a strong bend and a break. The closest blue can get is an effect that makes instants and sorceries cost 1 less for the rest of the turn."Despite the cost reduction being an arguably stronger, but comparable effect, it's a different mechanical issue right? Like Green gets mana ramp in the form of lands to battlefield or dorks, and red gets mana rituals. Those can accomplish the same thing in different ways, but don't overlap to keep the feel of those colors different. So if Red gets one shot mana production, blue can have cost reduction (probably related to a very blue subset of cards).

We do like to differentiate effects between colors. Note that not every effect, even variations, are available in every color. Aid in casting spells is core enough to the game that we allow each color some access. The less it’s a general ability, the more focused in how and on what it can be used.

It’s somewhere between a strong bend and a break. The closest blue can get is an effect that makes instants and sorceries cost 1 less for the rest of the turn.

Smothering Tithe Break

If red and green are meant to be the best at making treasure tokens, does that make smothering tithe a bend or break?

It’s a break.

Mono-Green Self-Untap

New 12 Oct 2023 Asked by kagusthic 25 Comments

Id self-untap like Simic Ragworm a bend or break in mono-Green?

If you spend colored mana, you can get effects of that color. Blue can have creatures that activate to untap, so its not an issue. Green does get a little bit of untapping, but more on boosting spells to allow it to block.

Mana Flare Mechanics

New 24 Aug 2023 Asked by lordmohses 31 Comments

Hi Mark,Is mana flare considered a bend or break in red? I’m curious as red gets unique forms of ramp in terms of rituals and treasures, but I don’t think I’ve seen any other monored cards that buff land mana production.

Mana Flare is somewhere from severe bend to break. It’s not something we do anymore in red.

Ezuri's Predation

New 13 Aug 2023 Asked by dapatman-blog 37 Comments

Speaking of mass fight/bite in green, is Ezuri's Predation a break? It feels to me like it combines two green things (large token creation and fight effects) to get a not-green thing (removing opponents' creatures without using your own (that are already on the battlefield)).

It’s either very strong bend or break.

Blue Card Token Bend

New 28 Jul 2023 Asked by rowanalpha 38 Comments

Ixalan had a 2/2 black Pirate with menace as a “standard” token for that faction. It didn’t appear on any blue pirate faction cards, but would that have been a bend or break for a blue card to make a 2/2 menace token?

A bend.

Color's Historical Abilities

New 27 Jul 2023 Asked by blasphazar 31 Comments

My birthday trivia was lost earlier this month so I'll ask a different question. Are things that a color used to do that they don't do anymore considered a bend or break from a design perspective, like for example how black used to have rituals or how blue used to do ping damage?

Having done it before doesn’t really change anything. Early Magic has all sorts of out of pie cards.

Black's Limits

New 19 Jul 2023 Asked by drchipmunk 21 Comments

Is "Return target permanent you control to its owner's hand" a bend or break in black?

It’s not something I think we’d do without strong extenuating circumstances, and I doubt ever at “instant speed”.

Mana Echoes Classification

New 15 Jun 2023 Asked by chairsarefornerds 27 Comments

On the topic of red color pie: Mana Echoes feels out of place for red, one of my favorite cards but is it a bend or break? (however in a balance sense I know any othwer color with it would be broken, except maybe black but i just like zombies loll)

I think it’s in color pie, at most a slight bend. Red is number two in mana production.

Blue Creature Removal

New 10 Mar 2023 Asked by j-waffles 54 Comments

You’ve said that blue isn’t supposed to get creature removal like Pongify anymore, the transformations should either be temporary or on auras. That being said, is phasing of zhalfir a bend or break? It’s basically just a mass Pongify, and since it’s it’s from DMR, half the time it’s just a sorcery that only says the third chapter

It’s a major bend on the third chapter of a Saga. Things can slip through as we’re phasing things out of colors (pun intended, of course).

Green Counters Challenge

New 01 Nov 2022 Asked by siamkor 30 Comments

Bend or break: green counter target artifact. I say bend because green doesn't get counterspells, but it does not undermine the colour's weaknesses. Others say break because green doesn't get counterspells. Who's right?

Having the ability to destroy something doesn’t automatically give you the right to counter it as well.

Off Color Effects Set

New 24 Oct 2022 Asked by blazinjsin 20 Comments

Any chance of getting a supplemental set that has cards with off color effects like in Planar Chaos?

A very low chance of ones that severely bend or break the color pie.
