The Moment

Nicol Bolas' Red Aspect

New 16 Nov 2019 Asked by allthedavesallofthem 72 Comments

What part of Nicol Bolas' personality makes him red? He's clearly blue/black, but his whole "plans that span millennia" thing seems pretty opposite of red's impulsiveness and living in the moment.

Bolas has strong emotions that sway him more than they should. Also, he’s a dragon.

Horror Tribal Support

New 23 Oct 2019 Asked by extreme-office-narcisist-blog 27 Comments

What are the chances of my absolute favorite creature type, horror, getting tribal support? At the moment there is one (1) card that supports my boys

I assume it will happen again eventually.

Minotaur Trivia Request

New 20 Oct 2019 Asked by kazzack 34 Comments

Hi Mark! My birthday was actually a few days ago but I just got the chance to post. could I possibly get some trivia on Minotaurs, my favorite tribe to play at the moment? And may I also put a request in for more Minotaurs in Theros? :)

The Hurloon Minotaur was adopted in the early days as an unofficial mascot for Wizards. As a result a lot of employees falsely believed that the card was much more popular with the players than it was. It took my years to convince people outside of R&D that it was a weak card. Happy Birthday!

Preview Season Timing

New 05 Sep 2019 Asked by ttip24 104 Comments

Dear Mark, getting information about future sets during preview season feels about exciting as a leak... great for the moment, but takes away from the current focus and just overall lowers my excitement. Could you ask the marketing team to wait just a bit longer?

I’m curious what you all think about our current experiment of briefly sharing the next year’s worth of Standard-legal sets. Do you like it, yes or no, and why?

Showing Planeswalker Sparks

New 08 Aug 2019 Asked by krishawnical 41 Comments

Have you ever thought about representing the moment a legendary creature sparks in a different way than a flip card? Say a lengendary Aura or domething likevthat?

I think double-faced cards have become the way to show it. They’re very popular.

Heroism Standards

New 17 Jul 2019 Asked by graymerchantsmonomyth 51 Comments

If Liliana was truly heroic, wouldn't she have sacrificed herself immediately instead of waiting until literally the last moment? A lot of people died because of her selfishness.

Wow, your bar of heroism is pretty high - yiu need to immediately sacrifice yourself the moment you believe it might save others.

Planeswalkers' Offspring

New 10 Jul 2019 Asked by forestd3w 55 Comments

You said the writer in you would say two planeswalkers having a baby, the baby is likely to have a spark too. The analyst in me want ti know why. How does two planeswalking parents makes it so that their baby have a spark too, when it their birth that gives it to them(or from the Kenrith twins and Nicol Bolas&Ugin, it seems not the moment of birth but the devellopement of the fetus).

The writer in my said yes because it makes for a good story. I didn’t say the scientist in me. : )

Snow Mana Adjustment

New 17 Jun 2019 Asked by mgmegadog 24 Comments

"Could you see R&D changing snow mana to specify a "snow source" rather than a "snow permanent"? At present it wouldn't change anything as snow sources are all permanent at the moment but it opens up snow rituals like you mentioned." "I don’t think we’re going to issue functional errata in order to design one or two cards. " Other mechanics have had more significant errata (like proliferate or legendary planeswalkers.) What makes this different?

If there’s significant gain to be had, I could see us tweaking the mechanic, but as I said, not if the gain is just a card or two.

Snow Mana Specification

New 16 Jun 2019 Asked by ultwarrior 24 Comments

Could you see R&D changing snow mana to specify a "snow source" rather than a "snow permanent"? At present it wouldn't change anything as snow sources are all permanent at the moment but it opens up snow rituals like you mentioned.

I don’t think we’re going to issue functional errata in order to design one or two cards.

Color of Solutions

New 08 Jun 2019 Asked by cairnwanderer 40 Comments

In a game all about questions and answers, why did you decide to make one color "the color of answers"?

Because part of making interesting colors is balancing contrasts. Having a color that can answer anything but doesn’t always have the answer it needs in the moment was an interesting take for a color.

Arena and Brawl Format

New 08 Apr 2019 Asked by kerwinray 61 Comments

Hi Maro— based on comments (and I agree with them)— the moment you guys introduced Arena, it became a defining way to play Magic on its own. Thus, the philosophy of “make it popular in tabletop/paper then we’ll introduce it in Arena” is a little antiquated I believe. Brawl WILL become more popular when introduced in Arena. In fact, it seems perfect and more suited for that medium. People will build their Brawl decks from their current Standard pool, find it easier to find other players, etc.

I think my last answer was received differently than I intended. If you have an interest in seeing Brawl on Magic: The Gathering Arena, it’s important for you to stress that interest so that the people choosing what to prioritize for MTG Arena will recognize the desire for Brawl. One way to do that, but not the only way, is to show enthusiasm for the format in tabletop. If you are interested in seeing Brawl on MTG Arena and have no interest in playing Tabletop Brawl, that’s fine. Just find other means to publicly express an interest. That’s all I was trying to say.

Hybrid Mana Symbols

New 07 Apr 2019 Asked by suigenyukiouji 32 Comments

"Bolas even initially had a blue/red hybrid symbol in his mana cost." Is mixing hybrid symbols with other full symbols of a different color something that might be done again, or is it considered too complicated/confusing? (And where is that on the storm scale?) I fondly remember cards like that from Alara Reborn. (ex. Crystallization)

It’s not something we plan doing often, but it made a lot of sense for Bolas as Standard is not very blue/black/red focused at the moment.

Legendary Sorceries Choice

New 16 Mar 2019 Asked by krinstranger 30 Comments

You've mentioned that you tried the most obvious implementation of Legendary sorceries (can't cast if there's already a copy in the graveyard) and decided it wanted to live in a set with a graveyard exile mechanic. Can you talk about why you chose to use the Dominaria version instead of sitting on it until the right environment came along?

Vision design did opt to “move along” as we couldn’t find a version we thought was intuitive. Set design explored some more and came up with the legendary spells mechanic (something we hadn’t tried). They chose to use it as the set had a strong legendary theme and there was this feel that the audience would expect legendary spells. It’s very easy with 20/20 hindsight and a pocketful of data to make a different call. In the moment, given the information they had, I get why they made that call.

Double-Faced Card Scale

New 17 Feb 2019 Asked by cowboydoggy 33 Comments

Since we’ve seen double-faced cards in multiple of the standard-legal sets, where would they be on the Storm Scale at the moment?

Double-faced card’s are a 3. They’re deciduous.

Core Set Planeswalkers

New 10 Nov 2018 Asked by elliotk68-blog 71 Comments

So Mark, given that M19 did allow for going back to the past (which is why all the Elder Dragons who were dead could be put in card form) why couldn't there be a dead Planeswalker that is being taken from the past (Xenagos at the moment of his spark, Venser in a period before making it to Mirrodin/New Phyrexia)? Not a criticism, an honest question, thanks Mark!

We use the Core Set to introduce planeswalkers to newer players, so we’re less likely to introduce one to new players that’s dead. “Welcome, to Magic. Come meet our planeswalkers. Like this one? He’s dead, you’ll never see him again.”

Rakdos Positive Traits

New 22 Sep 2018 Asked by theexplodingdragon 217 Comments

I'm not a big fan of Rakdos, but what are some positive traits of Red/Black?

It takes good care of itself.
It has good self-esteem.
It knows how to enjoy the moment.
It’s fun to be around.
It’s charismatic.
It’s good at getting the things it wants done:
It’s willing to take calculated risks.
It’s can take quick action. Just a few off the top of my head.

Aetherborn Color Philosophy

New 02 Sep 2018 Asked by viashinowizard 54 Comments

Philosophically, the Aetherborn seem like they would at least be partly red due to their "live life in the moment" culture. Are they monoblack because the set's color balance needed it? Were they perhaps made to highlight more of black's (often overlooked) positive traits?

They made sense in Kaladesh in black, but yes on another plane they could be red.

Future Segovian Cards

Even if a Segovia set is unlikely, are there any chances we might see another card of something Segovian? To my knowledge, there's only one at the moment.

Perhaps one day…

Excitement for Milk Set

New 02 Jul 2018 Asked by walkeraid 43 Comments

What future, still-codenamed set are you most excited for at the moment?

There’s so much awesome coming. It’s hard to pick one. Today, I’ll say Milk.

Kaladesh Creature Colors

New 23 Jun 2018 Asked by petra-the-kat 68 Comments

On Kaladesh, why aren't gremlins black and aetherborn red? Gremlins make their living destroying things (which could be red or black), but the whole point of Aetherborn is that they pack their short lives with doing whatever they want at the moment. Isn't that a super red philosophy?

Gremlins aren’t remotely black. Black can’t even destroy artifacts. I admit the Aetherborn have some red elements, although they also make sense in black.
