Discussing Dauthi Soltari

I’d love to see the dauthi soltari and such!

Is the Thalakos “and such”, like how Professor and Mary Anne were “the rest”?

Shadow Mechanic Trivia

New 09 Oct 2023 Asked by dmfmagic 26 Comments

Hello Mark! I'd like to request some birthday trivia about my favorite mechanic as a child, Shadow. Thank you so much!

Shadow was in the file before Michael Ryan and I created the story for Tempest, so we added in the Soltari, Thalakos, and Dauthi to the story to justify the existence of the mechanic.Happy Birthday!

Soltari Emissary Identity

New 12 Feb 2023 Asked by yellowfoliage 23 Comments

Wasn't Soltari Emissary supposed to be Lyna? I thought cards like her and Oracle En Vec were non-legendaries that still represented specific characters, back when legends were more scarce.

Lyna was pictured on Soltari Emissary.

Visiting Home Planes

New 16 Oct 2021 Asked by shinywobblernickelpaper-deactiv 34 Comments

Is there any chance of seeing the home planes of the Dauthi, Soltari, or Thalakos? The Kor were the other new race stolen for Rath but we eventually learned they are from Zendikar. If/when, "can I get a maybe :)", etc.

I hope to see some of them again. It does come up from time to time.

Unique Creatures Production Frequency

"1) There are also a bunch lower down on the scale. We have a lot of unique things to Magic.2) A bunch you have listed aren’t unique to Magic (like noggle or ouphe)." Which unique creatures are lower on the scale besides Slivers? And even those are only in supplemental sets at this point. I didn't know those weren't unique to magic, but the point is still the same; you guys seem to produce the more interesting looking and less generic creatures less often.

The original Magic creature types: Aetherborn, Assembly-Worker, Atog, Azra, Beeble, Blinkmoth, Bringer, Brushwagg, Camarid, Cephalid, Eldrazi, Fractal, Graveborn, Homarid, Inkling, Kavu, Kithkin, Kor, Lhurgoyf, Licid, Masticore, Metathran, Myr, Nightstalker, Orgg, Pentavite, Pest, Phelddagrif, Phyrexian, Praetor, Rigger, Saproling, Slith, Sliver, Soltari, Spellshaper, Spike, Surrakar, Tetravite, Thalakos, Triskelavite, Vedalken, Viashino, Volver, and Zubera.A bunch of those have appeared on new cards in the last five years.

Returning Shadow Races

New 26 Jan 2020 Asked by astralwizard85 40 Comments

What do you think our chances are of seeing the Soltari, Thalakos, and Dauthi again (without Shadow)?

We eventually saw the Kor’s homeworld. There’s not a lot of clamoring though to see the homeworld of those three.

First Strike Mechanics

New 04 Apr 2019 Asked by ilgreven 26 Comments

How much functional difference is there between "As long as it's your turn, ~this~ has first strike" (as seen on a few spoiled WAR cards) and "~this~ has first strike as long as it's attacking" (as seen on Soltari Lancer from Tempest)?

It matters on the few cards that care about something having first strike, but in most functional ways, they’re pretty similar.

Legendary Status Rarity

New 29 Nov 2018 Asked by anarresurras 24 Comments

I was reading your article on the weatherlight saga story, and I wonder, why wasn't Oracle of the en-vec or Lyna soltari emissary made legendary, when they seem like important characters?

We were a bit stingier with how many legendary creatures we made back then. The rules for legendary worked a bit differently and encouraged us to make less of them.

Thalakos Race Mechanics

New 19 Nov 2018 Asked by zanmor 26 Comments

Thalakos return: with or without Shadow? That seems to be their only defining characteristic at least mechanically.

The race came from somewhere. We could see their home plane one day and they wouldn’t have to have shadow. Same goes for the Soltari and the Dauthi.

Lost Tribes Lore

What's the likelihood of seeing where the Soltari, Dauthi, and/or Thalakos came from?

Perhaps one day.

Blogatog Trivia

I've been following Blogatog for quite some time, and I recently started attempting to guess your answers to the questions before reading them. I got your trivia on Olivia Voldaren bang on, so I thought I would brag about it.

Lyna, Soltari Emmisary is named after my mom, Lynn (who, by the way, will soon be appearing in a “Drive to Work” podcast.) Did you guess this one? : )
