Mitzi Statue Naming History

New 18 Jun 2024 Asked by makesasound 7 Comments

Why is the Shivan Dragon statue named Mitzi?

I don’t know who named her. She’s been called that as long as we’ve had the statue at the offices.

Moving Day Stories

New 17 Jun 2024 Asked by dkirzane 10 Comments

We're moving today! Any stories from one of your moves (personal or WotC offices)?

When we moved to Wizards second offices to our third (we’re now in our fourth), we moved across the street. There’s a great picture of us stopping traffic to move Mitzi, the Shivan Dragon statue.Happy Moving Day!

Flavor Words Opinion

New 05 Feb 2024 Asked by yuleooze 47 Comments

Long overdue feedback on flavor words in the text box: I'm a huge fan on 'show, dont tell' storytelling and world building so having the card literally tell me what its referencing feels hollow. If Shivan Dragon had the word firebreathing on it, it would feel less rewarding for the first time reader than it was for us. Thanks in advance.

We tend to lean into it more in Universes Beyond than Magic IP sets. The reason is there is language we want to reference to make fans of the property happy, and sometimes flavor words are the best place to do them. There are players on both sides of the issue, so it’s a balance.

Land Reprints Universes Beyond

New 24 Jan 2024 Asked by quantext 32 Comments

Could a land with a name that references an MTG location be reprinted in a Universes Beyond product? For example: Shivan Reef.

Mostly no, but there might be exceptions where the name uses generic words even though it’s technically a name.

Birthday Request Insight

New 31 Jul 2023 Asked by rubysisalis 32 Comments

Birthday ask. I cut my teeth on Revised..so anything related to Icy Manipator or Shivan Dragon would be great!

The “Shivan” of Shivan Dragon came from a reference to Shiva of Hindu mythology.Happy Birthday!

Trivia on Number 13

New 16 May 2023 Asked by bitwisenot 30 Comments

Hi Mark! It was my Birthday on the 13th, and I would like to ask for some trivia on the number 13 in Magic, not involving Innistrad. Thank you!

Shivan Meteor, from Planar Chaos, was the first Magic card with 13 in its rules text. We just wanted what felt like a large number and the number 13 felt fun.Happy Belated Birthday!

Omenpaths and Settings

New 10 May 2023 Asked by ricardolongo 45 Comments

In Urza's Saga, each of the colors had a different main setting, and they spanned multiple planes - Serra's Realm for white, Phyrexia for black, and Dominaria for blue, red, and green (Tolaria, Shiv, and Argoth, respectively). With the addition of omenpaths, could we see something like this again? Would that mean a possibility for planes like Mercadia or Ulgrotha to be featured in a premier set once more?

The omenpaths do open up design opportunities including seeing some planes we haven’t seen for a while.

Unique Land Effects

New 15 Apr 2023 Asked by alder-iris 30 Comments

im response to the birthday trivia from earlier, how did Phyrexian Tower and Shivan Gorge end up with those effects and not ones like the other three?

There weren’t five permanent types at the time.

Gaea's Cradle Trivia

New 15 Apr 2023 Asked by cle-guy 33 Comments

Tomorrow is my birthday and I was wondering if I could get some birthday trivia about my favorite card: Gaea’s Cradle?

Galea’s Cradle is part of a (loose) five card cycle, but many don’t realize what the black and red ones are. (Phyrexian Tower and Shivan Gorge.)Happy Birthday!

Card Simplicity

New 30 Aug 2022 Asked by mbertiaux 33 Comments

Hi Mark! Do you agree that the best and most memorable cards in Magic tend to be the easiest to grok? Lightning Bolt, Time Warp, Birds of Paradise and now even Shivan Devastator fit this description.

Magic likes having some simple, clean, evocative cards.

Category of Shivan Zombie

New 12 Jun 2022 Asked by ginkasai 31 Comments

Zombie is used as a race most of the time, right? So why is Shivan Zombie ordered as "Phyrexian Barbarian Zombie" on gatherer?

Zombie is sometimes a race, sometimes a class. It depends what other creature types are on the card.

Urza's Saga Cycle Inquiry

New 12 Jun 2021 Asked by shroudtailor 47 Comments

RE: the Urza's Saga cycle of Tolarian Academy, Serra's Sanctum, and Gaea's Cradle: Were Shivan Gorge and Phyrexian Tower intended to be part of that cycle? Why are their abilities so different from the other three?

They were intended to be part of that cycle. Each color got a land. They didn’t all tap for mana. There weren’t (at the time) five permanent types.

Dragon Element in Forgotten Realms

New 07 May 2021 Asked by blaze-1013 66 Comments

"Dragons have been a mainstay of Magic since the days of Shivan Dragon, and you can count on Adventures in the Forgotten Realms to show off plenty from their range of colors in Dungeons & Dragons." Please tell me Forgotten Realms is gonna have a decent dragon element to it? I know it's too early for you to really give info on the set, but it would make me very happy to hear that I can expect many scaly friends in the near future.

We showed off Tiamat today and it’s a five color legendary Dragon with a Dragon tribal component. : )

Color Allocation of Craddle Effects

New 12 Sep 2020 Asked by nuttywonderlandhologram-blog1 39 Comments

Hello Mr. Rosewater, I've got a question, why was WUG given craddle like effects in Urza's saga while RB got phyrexian tower and shivan gorge? Those colors could have used a craddle effect for damage and cards in the graveyard, did these exist and were too broken or were never conceived?

It’s okay for some colors to have things other colors don’t.

Firebreathing Evolution

New 04 Jan 2020 Asked by berryjon-patternrecognition 57 Comments

Mark, I was wondering why Wizards moved away from classic Firebreathing being something baked into a creature. Now I see creatures that have a cost of 1R for +2/+0 or something like that, but the old R for +1/+0 seems to have fallen by the wayside. I know Shivan Dragon gets put into Welcome Decks, but that seems like an exception more than anything else.

The 1R: +2/+0 is a stronger version that allows two-color decks to play with the cards.

Wizards HQ Visit

New 14 Apr 2019 Asked by fredfrisbee 43 Comments

Hi Mark! I'm an aspiring writer/game designer and I'm in seatle tomorrow looking at colleges... should I bother stopping by WoTC? Or is it not super tourist/visitor friendly?

There aren’t any tours per de. Sometimes the front desk will let you see the Shivan Dragon statue in the old lobby.

Colorless Costs Complexity

New 23 Sep 2018 Asked by turboblazer 32 Comments

Is colorless costs something R&D would feel comfortable doing in a small amount and using the Shivan Reef's of the set fill the colorless mana role, or are Wastes a necessity forcing the mechanical investment higher?

Colorless mana in costs requires more support than you might think at first blush. It’s also not particularly interesting design space.

Nightmare Card Decision

New 22 Jun 2018 Asked by aferalrose-blog 39 Comments

With M19 already fully spoiled, I have to ask... No Nightmare? Between this set being a core set and having a horse sub-theme I was /really/ expecting to see her around again. Instead it seems she is getting replaced by the new black bird, Gravewaker on the upcoming Welcome Decks 2019. Meanwhile, red still gets to keep Shivan Dragon for at least another rotation?

We tried Nightmare at uncommon, but it ended up being a trap in limited, so we took it out.

Shivan Dragon Rarity Concern

New 10 Mar 2018 Asked by shivandragonhorde 35 Comments

Is Shivan Dragon too strong at uncommon?

It would be problematic in limited.

Spitfire Bastion Inspiration

New 02 Oct 2017 Asked by badatcommander 31 Comments

I was surprised to read that Spitfire Bastion was an updated version of Valakut -- it looked an awful lot like a Shivan Gorge to me.

It was inspired by both.
