About Simpler Card Names

New 05 Aug 2021 Asked by sword-of-pride-and-prejudice 41 Comments

A lot of Dungeons and Dragons cards have short, unembellished names (e.g. Flameskull Owlbear, Tiamat). These make them stand out somewhat from normal Magic card names. Do you know why the decision was made to just go with the monster manual entries rather than naming cards like "Ornery Owlbear", "Cackling Flameskull", or "Tiamat, Dragon-Mother"?

We normally do that in Magic because we have to name a lot more cards like it. Tiamat, and such, didn’t have that problem.

Few 4 Color Legends

We've seen 3 color commanders and a surprising amount of 5 color commanders recently (Tiamat, Esika, Golos, Coddie) but why do we see so few 4 color Legends?

They’re hard to fit into sets and hard to design, harder interestingly than five-color.

Tiamat's God Assignment

Hey, Mark, can you speak to why Tiamat, from the upcoming set, is not a God? She is in DnD lore.

My best guess is space on the type line. EDIT: Apparently, the card *is* a God.

Tiamat's Trigger Ability

Tiamat has an ETB ability that only triggers if she was cast. Why not just make it a cast trigger?

Counterspells don’t stop a cast trigger.

Dragon Element in Forgotten Realms

"Dragons have been a mainstay of Magic since the days of Shivan Dragon, and you can count on Adventures in the Forgotten Realms to show off plenty from their range of colors in Dungeons & Dragons." Please tell me Forgotten Realms is gonna have a decent dragon element to it? I know it's too early for you to really give info on the set, but it would make me very happy to hear that I can expect many scaly friends in the near future.

We showed off Tiamat today and it’s a five color legendary Dragon with a Dragon tribal component. : )
