Mechanic Overload Concern

New 12 Mar 2024 Asked by nunziantimo 41 Comments

Why every set needs to introduce so many new keywords? I believe there are already enough. Stuff like Disguise, Cloak, Collect Evidence, Suspect, are born (and I believe dead) within Murders at Karlov Manor. LCI had Craft, Descend, Discover, Explore. OTJ has Crimes and probably more. I understand that it's fun to draft with new mechanics, but I hate when I am playing any format and have to search online what a specific new mechanic does.

We make new mechanics because players tell us it’s the number one factor of why they buy new sets. Disguise and cloak are just us updating Morph and Manifest, which I do expect us to use again. Collect evidence played well, so I assume it will return. Suspect is the mechanic I’m least sure we’ll use again, but I’ve said that about plenty of mechanics that went on to come back.If an excess of mechanics is frustrating for you, you might want to try a rotating format, like Standard, which greatly limits how many mechanics are available at a time. Non-rotating formats are just going to continually go up in mechanics. It’s their nature.

Set Previews Overload

New 24 Feb 2024 Asked by dungeonmasterryan 35 Comments

Mark why are so many sets being previewed all at once? I can't even focus on anything cause there's just so much. Id be happy for thoughtseize being reprinted if I could focus on it.

We used to just preview the next set. As with anything, we experiment to see if we can improve upon the process. So, we tried previewing farther ahead, showing more things. The feedback we got is the players mostly preferred the “show us more” version, so that is what we do.

Product Overload Concern

New 24 Feb 2024 Asked by heartwithnobeat 74 Comments

After yesterday's panel I'd like to add another vote to the "there's too much product" pile. I'm sure they will all be full of cool stuff, but we're almost in a constant preview season now and nothing feels special or exciting anymore.

That note is being heard and passed along.

Managing Card Overload

New 12 Oct 2023 Asked by gariond 53 Comments

The amount of cards being pumped out these days, from a gameplay experience perspective, is too overwhelming for me. What approaches are taken to ensure players can confidently grasp the entire scope of cards released, if any?

I don’t think enjoying the game is synonymous with understanding the totality of what exists, but for the fans that want that, there are databases that collect all the cards of each set that you can peruse at whatever speed you prefer.

Permanent Text Change

New 07 Oct 2023 Asked by punromantic 40 Comments

Is text changing on permanents something present day Magic can still do? My friends and I were discussing if Overload could technically work on creature

It’s less can it work and more do we want to do permanent effects without a means to track it?

Overload Design Choices

New 19 Aug 2023 Asked by uhhuh-waitwhat 35 Comments

Looking at cards like Supreme Verdict in the same set, why did Cyclonic Rift (and maybe some other Overload spells in RTR) not have an overload with two colors? Maybe (4)(R)(U)(U)? Was Commander in mind? Did the color pie trump flavor? Limited? Maybe something else?

We were just trying to execute the simplest version for the mechanic’s first outing.

Excitement Overload

New 05 Aug 2023 Asked by zombiedinosaurtoken-deactivated 24 Comments

Hey, Mark! This yearly (3-year?) announcement was the most excited I have ever been as a MtG player. This last standard year didn't have many things I was excited for but the next three are everything I like about MtG: new planes, return to my favorite planes and some amazing UB collabs. Please high five every single person responsible for this! Extra high fives for return to Tarkir, return to Lorwyn, Bloomburrow, Fallout and Jurassic Park!!!!

Will do!

Keyword Symbol Tokens

New 02 Aug 2023 Asked by tempus-vulpes 36 Comments

On the topic of the punch out symbol tokens for Keyword abilities, given time (probably a lot of it) and continued usage of those symbols, could we potentially see those symbols be used to represent those abilities directly on cards? Specifically, I mean, if we use the "symbol" for flying for the next 5 years, could we theoretically see it replace the "word" on cards that naturally have the ability?

It circles back to the symbol overload issue. Symbols are significantly more intimidating to new players than words (which are already plenty intimidating).

Legendary Creatures Overload

New 25 May 2023 Asked by crazedporcupine 22 Comments

Do you think that the pendulum has gone too far in the "printing too many" direction in the spectrum of "too many" and "none"? I know that as a commander player I'm overwhelmed by the number of options now available, and competitive players lament that playable cards are legendary because they'd like to be able to have multiple copies on the battlefield. Is there a chance we'll see less legendary creatures the next few years compared to the last few years?

I think we’ve definitely pushed the pendulum more towards more in the last few years. I do think the pendulum will continue swinging making it ebb in spots.

Kicker Mechanics Frequency

New 06 Apr 2023 Asked by anookee 35 Comments

With kicker being deciduous, are Strive and Overload type mechanics any less probable? If a lot of mechanics are "just kicker" and kicker is now more common, is it fair to expect less "just kicker" mechanics in the future?

It won’t change how often we use “renamed kicker” mechanics.

Symbols for Abilities Proposal

New 18 Feb 2023 Asked by roastedgravy 28 Comments

Has using the static, triggered, and activated ability symbols from MTGO/Arena on the cards themselves to help identify which abilities are static, triggered, or activated ever been considered?

We’re very concerned with symbol overload.

Localization Challenges

New 04 Jan 2023 Asked by escapingburger 38 Comments

When creating a mechanic like Overload or Cleave that changes the card text, do you work with your localization team in advance to understand its impact on different languages? I did a little research and found that Overload cards in Japanese actually spell out the new effect in the reminder text, for example.

Of course.

Dragons Overload

New 24 Aug 2022 Asked by corhydraeuniverse-blog 36 Comments

I know I'm supposed to let other people enjoy what they like, but... can we tone down the dragons for a couple of sets please? It feels especially bad when there's a badass looking legendary viashino in the new set which does dragon tribal stuff instead of supporting his own tribe, when we already have SO MUCH dragon tribal support and basically no viashino tribal.

The reason Dragons get so much love is they’re the most popular creature type, and by a pretty wide margin. We do have lots of plans for other creature types though.

Cleave and Overload Pairing

New 02 Jun 2022 Asked by bergdg 45 Comments

Conceivably, could we see cleave and overload on the same card?

Such a thing is possible. The trick is finding a good design.

Potential Overload of DFCs

New 03 Jan 2022 Asked by ricketyeng 49 Comments

Do you think we have reached or are approaching a critical mass of DFC's existing where it could make sense to have a whole sheet of them reprinted for the List?

I do not.

Un-Set Legality and Generic Mana

New 11 Dec 2021 Asked by godsmack711 54 Comments

I'm going to cheat and ask two questions at once! Blasphemy! 1. Are there any plans on making any cards from Unglued, Unhinged, Unstable and Unsanctioned eternal legal to follow the example of Unfinity? 2. Do you think this might work: An entire set where the base cost of cards is generic mana, but utilizes color in the rules text (à la kicker, adamant, overload, activated abilities, etc)

1. We’re not doing it in conjunction with Unfinity, but if Unfinity does well, it’s something we might consider for the future.2. It would require the right set, but sure, it’s a possibility.EDIT: For #2, I believe it could be a theme. I doubt the whole set would be that as we don’t do “everything is ______” gimmick sets any more.

Influence of Overload on Cleave

New 29 Oct 2021 Asked by cle-guy 19 Comments

Did Overload inspire Cleave?

I don’t believe directly, but possibly indirectly.

Compliments for Cleave Mechanic

New 29 Oct 2021 Asked by impolitemtg 27 Comments

Hi Mark, I just wanted to let you know that Chris, the other host od our channel and I both really liked Cleave as a mechanic.
It reads kind of like Overload with the text changing, and it's easier to grok to! Solid work on the mechanic! Issue high fives please!

Will do.

Translatability of Cleave Mechanic

New 28 Oct 2021 Asked by su92 30 Comments

About Cleave, are there going to be impossible-to-translate text changes like it happened with overload? Or was it more curated?

We worked very hard to make it a translatable mechanic.

Influence of Product Overload

New 18 Apr 2021 Asked by tqmurdock 24 Comments

When looking at popularity of products like Conspiracy 2 and Battlebond do you consider the effect of product overload? Battlebond sounded amazing to me as a draft fan and the one judge in town who actually loves two headed giant but the window was so short that since I was busy the weekend it came out I've never played it since no one wanted to play it once previews for the next thing were out. I just wonder if it's known what effect the particular timing had on its popularity.

We have a lot of metrics, so we can gauge various impact criteria. Also, market research hasn’t shown to be horribly influenced by product volume.
