Canine Variety and Decks

New 12 Jun 2024 Asked by hopeless-knight 20 Comments

why are canids all split in different types (Dogs, wolves, Jackals, Foxes, and up to a certain point, Hounds), while all felines, no matter what variance in taxonomy, are typed as just Cat? It seems a bit unfair, specially if you are trying to do any sort of Canine kindred deck, as support for them is just scattered between all of these types.

It helps greatly that people refer to all felines as Cat (often jungle cat for the large ones).

Creature Type Criteria

New 12 Apr 2024 Asked by jonscreenshow 29 Comments

During the most recent creature type errata Naga are being changed to Snake. Jackals have fewer creatures than Nagas, so why weren't they changed to Dog? What's the criteria for a creature type errata if it's not based on creature types with fewer cards being rolled into larger ones?

The simple answer is Jackals aren’t Dogs in the vernacular of how people talk about them. We try to avoid using creature types that make for creative dissonance.

Creature Type Uniqueness

New 04 Apr 2024 Asked by bcrazy713 111 Comments

Hey Mark, on the topic of players being worried about creature types losing their distinctiveness by being added in with the broader type rather than a specific race (ex. Viashino(Lizard) or Naga(Snake)), I looked to see how many are already currently templated this way and there are ALOT more than I realized.Archaic (Avatar), Aven (Bird), Leonin (Cat), Malamet (Cat), Nishoba (Cat Beast), Daemogoth (Demon), Ainok (Dog), Flamekin (Elemental), Loxodon (Elephant), Mycoid (Fungus), Thallid (Fungus), Akki (Goblin), Boggart (Goblin), Mogg (Goblin), Redcaps (Goblin), Eumidian (Insect), Kraul (Insect), Nantuko (Insect), Khenra (Jackal), Kitsune (Fox), Merrow (Merfolk), Selkie (Merfolk), Triton (Merfolk), Onakke (Ogre), Caryatid (Plant), Nezume (Rat), Rhox (Rhino), Amphin (Salamander), Orochi (Snake), Kami (Spirit), Drogskol (Spirit), Eidolon (Spirit), Ent (LoTR) (Treefolk), Trow (Troll), Kappa (Turtle), Liche (Zombie), Eternal (Zombie), Draugr (Zombie), Nim (Zombie), Skaab (Zombie)

Yep. Most of the ones that didn’t do it entered the game before we made this the default.

Batching Canines

New 04 Apr 2024 Asked by komradek-blog 140 Comments

Can we batch cainines? Lions are cats, leopards are cats, and leonine are cats , but what about dogs? We have coyotes, dogs, foxes, jackals, and wolves, but nothing that groups them? Betrayal of man’s best friend I say.

It’s a possibility in the right set.

Batching Subtype Consideration

New 04 Jan 2024 Asked by vanhawk 22 Comments

if or when: a batching subtype for effects like cavern of souls (eg.: Canine for wolves, foxes, jackals, werewolves and so on).

If. We can make batches such that a particular card cares about the batch, but its trickier to make a batch that a card making you pick a creature type can care about.

Classification of Creatures

New 08 Aug 2021 Asked by darkfox190 40 Comments

Why does the game have Dog, Wolf, Jackal, and Fox as creature types, but all the felines (Except Hyenas, for some reason) are typed as Cat? Dog tribal really suffers for this. If lions, tigers, and felidar (Oh my!) can all be under the same type as house cats, then wolves, jackals, and foxes should be just fine grouped in with dogs as well.

Blame English. All jungle cats are called “cats” while all the things you list aren’t called “dogs”.

Creature Classification: Cats vs Dogs

New 07 May 2021 Asked by gramplot 78 Comments

Why are lions, leopards, tigers and panthers all cats but wolves, hyenas, foxes and jackals aren't dogs?

Because, in real life, people refer to lions, leopards, tigers and panthers as “cats” and don’t refer to wolves, hyenas, foxes and jackals as “dogs”.

Red's Vanilla 2/1 Explained

New 07 Apr 2021 Asked by sabett-blog 73 Comments

In reference to you saying "I don’t think Red gets a vanilla 2/1 for R." Red has had that with an upside, Falkenrath Gorger, and plenty of those with downsides, Jackal Pup. What is preventing red from having something inbetween? Is Falkenrath Gorger considered a break/bend?

Let me clarify what I was saying. Common and uncommon are more focused on the power level of limited formats while rare and mythic rare are more focused on the power level of constructed formats. A red one-drop vanilla 2/1 is a bit strong in limited, so we don’t tend to make it at common and uncommon. The power level is acceptable in constructed formats, but at the higher rarities we tend not to do vanilla creatures, so it tends to have things added to it. That’s why it’s tricky to get a vanilla one-drop 2/1 in red.

Proposing Canine Cycles

New 13 Feb 2020 Asked by bcrossfire 95 Comments

While we're discussing cycles of mammals, how about canines? I would propose Dogs, Foxes, Jackals, Coyotes, and Wolves. Foxes are viewed as the most clever and intelligent of the canine family, Jackals are scavengers, and Coyotes are associated with the arid desert.

Ooh, I like animal cycles.

Wolves Aren't Dogs

New 20 Oct 2019 Asked by kumagoro42 45 Comments

"Wolves aren’t Dogs" In the same way that lions and panthers aren't cats. But once you generically group lions and panthers under "Cats", then Wolves and Jackals should be grouped under "Dogs" (it should be "Felines" and "Canines", but if you use the more common parlance, the two sets should behave in the same way). Also, Hyena should be a "Cat Dog" because it's genetically both.

The problem is jungle cats like lions and panthers *are* referred to as cats while wolves are never referred to as dogs.

Consolidating Creature Types

New 24 Aug 2019 Asked by righteousforest 27 Comments

In a perfect world where you have won the battle of the dog creature type, do you have wolves and jackals merged into it?

No, as I don’t think people think of them as Dogs (and they’re not).

Feline vs Canine Tribes

New 15 Jul 2019 Asked by cookielord55-blog 73 Comments

Why are all feline animals tribal-ed as cats in Magic, but canine animals are separated between 5 different tribes (hound, jackal, wolf, fox, and Hyena). As a canine lover it makes me a bit sad since tribal support for canine is separated across so many tribes.

You have the English language to blame as big jungle cats are referred to as “cats”.

Creature Type Consistency

New 22 Apr 2019 Asked by theuninvitedghost 64 Comments

“All felines, be they quadrupeds or bipeds, lions, tigers or leonins, share the same creature type: cat. Why don't canids? Having werewolves, wolves, hounds and jackals as separate creature types really hurts tribal gameplay.” I vastly prefer Snakes and Nagas, Lizards and Viashinos, etc. And would prefer Leonin to be a creature type. If there was a Leonin Captain that gave First Strike to Cats, why on earth would house cats or tigers or lions benefit? That flavor fail kills me.

Another Vorthos/Mel conflict. Vorthoses tend to lean towards more creature types for flavor while the Mel’s prefer less creature types to mechanically link cards together more.

Canid Creature Types

New 21 Apr 2019 Asked by venuenora-blog 56 Comments

All felines, be they quadrupeds or bipeds, lions, tigers or leonins, share the same creature type: cat. Why don't canids? Having werewolves, wolves, hounds and jackals as separate creature types really hurts tribal gameplay.

It was a vernacular issue. The fact that large jungle cats are called “cats” helped a lot.

Eternal Diversity

New 01 Apr 2019 Asked by braveswordwielder 49 Comments

All of the Eternals we’ve seen in the art so far have been humans. But on Amonkhet, Bolas was making all the sapient races into Eternals. Will we see any Minotaur, Aven, Jackal, or Naga Eternals in WAR?

There are non-human Eternals coming.

Tribal Support Variety

New 13 Dec 2018 Asked by 1for3-for-president-of-haik-blog 48 Comments

Why are there so many pointless creature types like Jackals that have zero tribal support? And why didn't Jackals recieve any while they were a major race of Amonkhet?

We’ve made the choice to have more creature types than available tribal cards for variety. That means not every tribe gets tribal cards, at least not enough to build a whole deck around. We continue to make new tribal cards, some of which let you choose a tribe, so there’s always hope for your favorite.

Calculating Life Totals

If my opponent is at 20 life, and I Just Desserts their Jackal Pup, what is their life total? 16.8584073464? Or does it round to something?

I usually round to the hundredth’s place.

Amonkhet Gods Types

New 25 Sep 2017 Asked by anti0ch 48 Comments

Was there ever a debate about if the Amonkhet Gods would get a secondary creature type back when it was being designed? e.g. "Cat God, Bird God, Crocodile God, Jackal God, Snake God"

No, we tend to just let Gods be Gods.

Canid Classification

New 02 Sep 2017 Asked by leovold-emissary-of-trest 57 Comments

Hi, Mark! Is there a reason other Canids like jackals, foxes and wolves ate not Hounds, while lions and tigers and other felines are treated as Cats?

Dog discrimination. Actually, I think it’s a result of the Cats strong lobbyists.
