Future of Hyena Cards

New 03 Jul 2024 Asked by enri-yeen 10 Comments

Hello Mark!! Hope you are having a good day, today I decided to make a collection of hyena cards and realized "huh, that is not many hyenas" which in one hand is nice because it means my collection is almost complete! But was wondering, will we see any more hyenas in the near future?
They are neat!

I assume we’ll make more Hyenas.

Possibility of More Hyenas

Can I get a maybe on more Hyenas in the future? We've only had five printed in the entire game, and one of them is silver-boarded.

Maybe. : )

Creating New Creature Types

New 19 Aug 2021 Asked by lordlucide 28 Comments

I'm positive you've been asked similar questions before, but what goes into the process of making new creature types that could be another type. Like Nagas instead of Snakes, or Gnolls instead of Hyenas, or in reverse where Demons are used instead of Tiefling?

It has a lot to do with the equity of the new word. Werewolves could have been Wolves, but Werewolf had a lot of equity, making it more appealing.

Classification of Creatures

Why does the game have Dog, Wolf, Jackal, and Fox as creature types, but all the felines (Except Hyenas, for some reason) are typed as Cat? Dog tribal really suffers for this. If lions, tigers, and felidar (Oh my!) can all be under the same type as house cats, then wolves, jackals, and foxes should be just fine grouped in with dogs as well.

Blame English. All jungle cats are called “cats” while all the things you list aren’t called “dogs”.

Creature Type Consistency Inquiry

Why are gnolls creature type gnoll (not hyena), but yuan-ti creature type snake (not yuan-ti)?

It has to do with equity of the word.

Creature Type Decisions

New 02 Jul 2021 Asked by robotface 42 Comments

Why are Yuan-Ti snakes, but Gnolls get their own creature type rather than being hyenas? I'd personally have preferred more members for the already-existing underused type.

Each was decided on a case-by-case basis trying to balance backwards compatibility with enhanced D&D flavor.

Zoology Trivia: Hyenas aren't dogs. They're closer related to cats, but they are just their own critter.

Creature Classification: Cats vs Dogs

New 07 May 2021 Asked by gramplot 78 Comments

Why are lions, leopards, tigers and panthers all cats but wolves, hyenas, foxes and jackals aren't dogs?

Because, in real life, people refer to lions, leopards, tigers and panthers as “cats” and don’t refer to wolves, hyenas, foxes and jackals as “dogs”.

Potential Gnoll Creature Type

New 17 Jul 2020 Asked by armageddonacolyte 44 Comments

Hey Mark! If you were ever to introduce Gnolls to magic, do you think they would be creature type Hyena or would they receive their own unique creature type?

Not sure. Thoughts?

Wolves Aren't Dogs

New 20 Oct 2019 Asked by kumagoro42 45 Comments

"Wolves aren’t Dogs" In the same way that lions and panthers aren't cats. But once you generically group lions and panthers under "Cats", then Wolves and Jackals should be grouped under "Dogs" (it should be "Felines" and "Canines", but if you use the more common parlance, the two sets should behave in the same way). Also, Hyena should be a "Cat Dog" because it's genetically both.

The problem is jungle cats like lions and panthers *are* referred to as cats while wolves are never referred to as dogs.

Feline vs Canine Tribes

New 15 Jul 2019 Asked by cookielord55-blog 73 Comments

Why are all feline animals tribal-ed as cats in Magic, but canine animals are separated between 5 different tribes (hound, jackal, wolf, fox, and Hyena). As a canine lover it makes me a bit sad since tribal support for canine is separated across so many tribes.

You have the English language to blame as big jungle cats are referred to as “cats”.

HYENAS. AREN'T. DOGS. MARK.

That’s probably why no one calls them a dog. : )

FWIW, Hyenas are actually closer to cats than dogs.

Good to know.

Creature Type Distinctions

New 15 Apr 2017 Asked by thwackerjack 39 Comments

Why are jackals/foxes/hyenas/hounds/wolves distinct from one another but lions/tigers/panthers/cheetahs/leopards/cats are all cats. Are dogs really not popular/beloved enough that players don't want dog tribal as much as cat tribal? Or is it because dogs are known as "hounds" in Magic, which isn't as resonant as "cat".

I think we have vernacular working against us. A lion is called a cat, but a hyena isn’t called a dog or hound.

Mummies vs Zombies

New 29 Mar 2017 Asked by gnomepolean 47 Comments

How come we have hyenas, foxes, wolves, hounds, and jackals, but we can't get a distinction between mummies and zombies?

There are tons of Zombie tribal cards including a bunch in Standard. Making Mummies not Zombies would upset more players. (Plus the change of Mummies to Zombies happen many years ago.)
