Creature Type Trivia

New 14 Jan 2023 Asked by irlnautica 32 Comments

It's my birthday! By the ancient rites, could I get some trivia about hags or harpies (two of my favourite underused creature types)?

Doing a little research, it turns out I made the first harpy in Magic, Screeching Harpy in Tempest. I was just trying to find a flavorful thing to put on a 2/2 creature with flying and regeneration.Happy Birthday!

Adventurer Cards Flavor Discrepancy

New 19 May 2022 Asked by natew000 56 Comments

So far, for Baldur’s Gate, most of the adventurer cards I’ve seen are monsters (hag, dragon, etc.). While it might make for fine play design, I feel like the creative/flavor side of “going on an adventure” is more appropriate for creatures that could conceivably be player characters. What do you think — is this something the design teams consider?

The flavor of the adventure cards in CLB is you’re going on the adventure and the creatures/artifacts are the things you encounter.

Phage the Untouchable Drawback

Why isn’t the Phage the Untouchable drawback used more often to prevent shenanigans?

It’s a bit harsh.

Return to Lorwyn/Shadowmoor

New 19 Jan 2022 Asked by snowden-is-cold 106 Comments

Out of curiosity, what would be a high level approach for a return to Lorwyn/Shadowmoor? Integrating Shadowmoor doesn't seem to be too much of an issue with just using a bit more hybrid and adding Scarecrows as a tribe. However, Eventide seems a bit harder. It has notable amounts of Dwarves, Noggles, Hags and Spirits as half the creatures aren't the eight Lorwyn tribes. Would they just go the way of the Surrakar even they take up a notable amount of one set?

I have a real cool idea how to return to Lorwyn/Shadowmoor, but I don’t want to share it here because I hope to actually do it one day and want you guys to be surprised if I manage to pull it off.

Design of Phage the Untouchable

Did your original design for Phage the Untouchable include her first ability, or was that added by development?

I had something similar to prevent abuse.

Trivia on Phage Design

New 25 May 2021 Asked by jillescas87 82 Comments

Hi Mark! Today is finally my birthday, so I wanted to check if you have any unheard trivia about my favorite character Phage the Untouchable. If not, then maybe some secret about New Phyrexia?

It’s my birthday too! I designed Phage before the character existed. I just liked the idea of a creature that killed you if it hit you. My plan was to find a home for the design, so I was very excited when I learned there was a character that killed anything she touched in the current set. I took my design, added deathtouch and made it legendary. Happy Birthday!

Phage the Untouchable Trivia

Hi Mark! Can I have some birthday trivia on Phage the Untouchable?

I designed the card a few months earlier but didn’t know what to do with it. Then I saw the story with Phage for the first time. I literally said, “I got this.” Happy Birthday!

Consideration for Creature Combination

New 18 Apr 2020 Asked by jillescas87 40 Comments

Was a sorcery or instant or effect that mutates two non human creatures to combine them ever considered? Would have loved to combine Phage the Untouchable with a 1/1 squirrel to make the perfect squirrel assassin...

Combining any two creatures leads to a bunch of rules issues. It’s why Grusilda is silver-bordered.

Hag Type Confusion

Why do so many people think hag is a class type? It's a race, just like in D&D.

Good point.

What about the Hag creature type? Wasnt that the black spellcaster creature type?

Hag is not inherently tied to spellcasting.

Warlock vs. Hag

I know they are not the same thing, technically, but does the Warlock type preclude the use of the Hag type?

Probably.

Phage Trivia for Birthday

New 18 Jul 2019 Asked by trupie 44 Comments

Hey MaRo can I get trivia about either of my favourite cards, Phage the Untouchable or Progenitus, for my birthday?

I designed Phage a while before Legions but didn’t know what to do with the design. When I learned about the character of Phage, I was like, “I got this.”Happy Birthday!

Hag vs. Witch

New 22 Apr 2018 Asked by jtfr96 32 Comments

I'm just curious, how come hag is a supported type and not witch? It seems like in most lore hags would be witches.

Hag hasn’t been made in quite a while.

Witch vs Hag

New 22 Apr 2018 Asked by nvijork 29 Comments

Hi Mark, with regard to the whole Witch creature type discussion, would it be better to use Hag which is already an existing type? (albeit with only like 10 cards) That seems like it gets across witchiness pretty well.

Witch conveys more and is more resonant, with less baggage, than Hag.

Zombie Tribe Trivia

New 03 Mar 2018 Asked by yamisquall 60 Comments

Hello Maro. I asked for birthday trivia last year and the year before but you somehow missed it; so, today is my 30th birthday and I'm trying again: Do you have some UNHEARD trivia about my favorite tribe, Zombies?

Zombies are one of my favorite tribes, but fir many years they weren’t competitive, so in my first lead design (Tempest) I made two really good Zombies (Carnophage and Sarcomancy) and voila the first constructed Zombie deck happened. : ) Happy Birthday!

Phage's Ability Context

I have out Over My Dead Bodies and attack with Phage the Untouchable. As she is in a graveyard, would it still cause game loss, or is the ability only relevant on the field?

Her ability still works.

Phage Game Loss

New 15 May 2016 Asked by drkrieger 19 Comments

Un-Rules questions: If I cast Yet Another Aether Vortex and the top card of my opponent's library is Phage the Untouchable, does she lose the game because Phage wasn't cast from her hand?

Phage’s ability is an “enter the battlefield” trigger and Yet Another Vortex doesn’t trigger “enter the battlefield” abilities.

Phage and Aether Vortex

If Yet Another Aether Vortex flips over Phage the Untouchable, do you lose?

You do not because “enter the battlefield” triggers aren’t triggered.
