Token Creation and Design Validity

New 17 Jul 2024 Asked by fanfactorpodcast 4 Comments

I remember during GDS2 one of the designers had a mechanic that created a token that was a copy of the creature with swapped P/T. One of the complaints was it meant too many tokens would need to be made.
Now we have offspring, embalm, and eternalize. Does that make the complaints for the design less valid?

The bar to do so is high, but lower than it once was.

Tokens and Counters in Bloomburrow

New 17 Jul 2024 Asked by nothingbutland-blog 5 Comments

Does Bloomburrow have more unique tokens and counters in total than Fallen Empires? Seems really close.

Offspring, embalm, and eternalize create a unique token for each creature with the mechanic, so it pumps up the number of tokens. It wouldn’t surprise me if it passes Fallen Empires.

Reason for Tokens Keeping Mana Costs

New 09 Jul 2024 Asked by dude1818 24 Comments

Why was it decided that the tokens created by offspring would keep their mana costs, unlike the tokens created by embalm/eternalize?

It was a templating decision to lessen the word count, I believe.

Type-Specific Abilities Viability

New 31 May 2024 Asked by meu133 45 Comments

Hi Mark, since you aren't doing abilities linked to types (the old "Walls can't attack" rule), what do you think about types linked to abilities? (things like Embalm & Eternalize granting the Zombie type or a rule saying "Mutated creatures are Mutants")

I’m not against the concept, but it has a pretty high bar to clear.

Modern Horizon Sets

New 24 May 2024 Asked by blaze-1013 3 Comments

I know people have mixed feelings on Modern Horizon sets and how they impact Modern, but I just want to say that from a design standpoint the cards are simply glorious. A card with both Ferocious and Eternalize is just so cool and all the MH sets have things along those lines. High fives to all the people that make these sorts of combinations.

High fives will be passed along.

Future Zombie Theme

New 20 Nov 2023 Asked by tescrin 38 Comments

"Zombie feels like a when," - I think Amonkhet was your Zombie set -> every color had access to zombies via Embalm and Eternalize; with most being White/Green/Blue (and black of course having normal zombies.)

Zombie Apocalypse seems such a staple of pop culture, that I assume one day we’ll do our spin on it.

Tokens Without Mana Cost

New 25 Apr 2023 Asked by tybonel13 37 Comments

It's been a while, but why did Embalm and Eternalize make the tokens with no mana cost?

We didn’t want to put mana costs on the tokens as we thought it would create confusion.

Reprinting Silver-Bordered Cards

New 30 May 2022 Asked by elderdragonmaster55 38 Comments

The cards from previous unset that can be reprinted without a acorn symbol Can they be reprinted in normal sets or do they have to be un-set/un-masters

We haven’t actually decided if we’re willing to “eternalize” a silver-bordered card.

Color Allocation for Reanimating Mechanics

New 21 May 2022 Asked by mois113 37 Comments

Wait, if black/green are the self reanimating colors and Eternal Dragon is a break, then why does white get mechanics like Embalm, Eternalize and Disturb, on high volume even?

White can reanimate other creatures. It’s number two at reanimating. It’s not supposed to be on creatures reanimating themselves as that’s black and green (and red on Phoenixes). We let mechanics do it which is why the three above mechanics did it, but we don’t let white do it on individual cards much like blue got Embalm but doesn’t get it on individual creatures.

2-Set Blocks Preference

New 17 Nov 2021 Asked by zackdes44 53 Comments

I agree that the 3-set block structure often made things feel stale, but I would like to see 2-set block structure be the norm. Seeing mechanics evolve (embalm/eternalize) or just exploring more design space than a single set could (energy/disturb) provides more ability to build around a mechanic we like.

We did try two-set blocks for a couple years, without great success.

Thoughts on 'Disturbed' Mechanic

New 21 Sep 2021 Asked by myheartgoesoontz 85 Comments

My thoughts on Disturbed: it's an interesting mechanic in a vacuum, but it's hampered by the fact that this is like the fourth or fifth time we've gotten "Flashback... But for Creatures!" (Unearth, Embalm, Eternalize, kind of Escape) and it shows up alongside actual Flashback, which saps a lot of the excitement because it feels like a rehash. Add that to it eating up DFC space that feels like it could have been spent on resonant tropes and it seems lackluster in my opinion.

Why is people dying and coming back as ghosts not resonant?

Energy Mechanic and Storm Scale

New 27 Aug 2021 Asked by musermatt 41 Comments

Where does the energy mechanic currently stand on the storm scale? In 2019 you rated it 6, then in the same article you put eternalize at 8 and said you were skeptical it would ever return, so it's funny since eternalize did come back in MH2. Could energy return in a similar capacity in the future, or would a full-on return to Kaladesh be required? I'm still holding out hope for an energy commander!

The Storm Scale is about things returning to Standard, so Eternalize has still not returned from a Storm Scale perspective. Energy is still a 6.

Token Pack in Bundles

New 08 Jul 2020 Asked by barracius 33 Comments

Good morning Mark. I hope things are well with you. I have a request, one that I assume is not under your control but that you could pass on to those who do control it. Specifically, would it be possible to include in the bundles a packet of all the tokens created by the cards in the given set (as was done with Amonkhet's and Hour of Devastation's Embalm and Eternalize tokens)? As a token lover & user, it is often nice to have more but it can get difficult to collect. Many thanks.

I’ll pass along the request.

Birthday Trivia on Embalm/Eternalize

New 28 Apr 2020 Asked by gallivantcanary 37 Comments

Hi Mark. If/when day seems to have buried my ask, but can I get birthday trivia on Embalm/Eternalize?

To do Embalm we had to get permission to have a unique token for every card with the mechanic. Happy Belated Birthday!

Mechanic Iteration Discussion

New 26 Mar 2019 Asked by dunharrow-le-dingue 125 Comments

(On Eternalize and Megamorph vs Embalm and Morph) "The frustrating part is we weren’t trying to pass either of those two mechanics off as new mechanics. We were just trying to tweak them slightly to fit the story." I think that when people see a new keyword they get excited, but when they see it is so similar to an old one they judge it harshly. The way that exert kept the same name but got new functionality is exciting, but eternalize being a tweak of embalm is a let-down.

Let’s ask you all. Is tweaking a mechanic and giving it a new name for flavor and slightly altered mechanics something we should or shouldn’t be doing?

Eternalize Reception

New 26 Mar 2019 Asked by wantlessrelic 33 Comments

The thing that stood out the most to me in your recent storm scale article was the rating for Eternalize. As someone who got my non casual start with Amonkhet block I enjoyed the mechanic in draft and loved its applications later on in constructed. I got the impression from social media that eternalizing was well liked there also. Did Eternalize have a negative reception that just didn't penetrate the online discussion?

Online chat is focusing on a specific subset of players and is often not representative of the larger playerbase.

Threshold vs Eternalize

New 26 Mar 2019 Asked by phyrexiathings 30 Comments

It’s weird that threshold is a 9 on storm scale when Eternalize is an 8. If Eternalize is both narrow and unpopular, and only works on the plane if Amonkhet, how is it better off than threshold, which seems like a perfectly fine mechanic (just count to 7, works with graveyard themes, and creatures dying).

Maybe Eternalize should be a 9, but I’m skeptical of threshold coming back. (Shadows over Innistrad messed with delirium, a twist on threshold, and that didn’t go great.) But hey, I never say never. It could happen.

Eternalize vs Embalm

New 26 Mar 2019 Asked by dunharrow-le-dingue 38 Comments

I would guess though that Eternalize was not liked because it was a rehash of Embalm. Kind of like how Megamorph was hated. It was too similar to an old mechanic. If you had brought back embalm I think it would have been better received than just tweaking a mechanic.

The frustrating part is we weren’t trying to pass either of those two mechanics off as new mechanics. We were just trying to tweak them slightly to fit the story.

Eternalize Specificity

New 25 Mar 2019 Asked by spwndlove 53 Comments

I feel like Eternalize is the most setting-specific mechanic R&D has ever designed (it only really fits on Amonkhet during the Hours). Do you agree?

It’s up there.

Commander Color Rules

New 26 Apr 2018 Asked by blaze-1013 29 Comments

To continue again the color of the permant argument in commander, tons of cards make tokens of different colors. Embalm and Eternalize allow non white/black decks to have white and black creatures in play.

Good point.
