Devour

Birthday Creature Choice

New 25 May 2024 Asked by standtoarms 5 Comments

Dear Sir, It appears I've happened fortuitously to visit your blog on your birthday. Felicitations! In honour of the occasion, you have been granted the Devour Food ability until the next time it becomes Day. However, you may also need to pay Cumulative Upkeep. My question: what is your favourite creature whose power and toughness as numerals together form your new age?

I’ll say Ancient Greenwarden. I enjoy both Elementals and doubling things.

Ravenous Tyrannosaurus Clarified

New 15 Nov 2023 Asked by walkingoncracks 50 Comments

Hi Mark! Lots of confusion over the devour wording on Ravenous Tyrannosaurus. Can you confirm how it’s meant to be read? Is it 9 counters for sacrificing 3 creatures or 27?

It’s 9 counters. The reminder text in Oracle has been updated to make it clearer.

Rule Clarification

New 02 Aug 2023 Asked by faerross 35 Comments

"What if Indomitable Creativity had the creatures enter from the library?"Complex replacement effect interactions were never my specialty even before the hypothetical... But my initial concern is based on anything that messes with the library as part of a replacement effect.

Firstly, while I can't think of replacements that require payment off the top of my head, Chromatic Sphere's card draw mana ability always makes me wary.

The potentially messier example would be Devour ('as ~ enters you may sacrifice creatures') combined with Blightsteel Colossus ('if it would die, shuffle it into your library instead), for which I'd love confirmation/correction from less rusty rules experts.

While applying replacement effects you haven't yet made zone changes, but this would end up with the game attempting to move cards from the library at the same time as they were being shuffled away. (And I've no idea what the current precedent is for that, if one exists.)

Even in the event the rules can handle the above scenario, it would be intentionally allowing a messy interaction for questionable gain. There would always be a group that insisted the ruling was incorrect. ("Never give an order you aren't certain will be followed.")

An FYI with someone more familiar with the rules.

Jund Trivia

New 14 May 2023 Asked by grantwarmstrong 29 Comments

Hey Maro, it's my birthday today. Could I please get some trivia about Korvold, Fae-Cursed King, or if not then Jund sac in general?

In Shards of Alara, Jund’s named mechanic was going to be something that triggered whenever a creature died. We end up making a three-card cycle out of it and replaced it with devour. Happy Birthday!

Alara Appreciation

New 06 Feb 2023 Asked by thlr1 61 Comments

Hello, this is just an Alara appreciation reminder: A world with one of the coolest and very iconic mechanics (Cascade, Unearth, Exalted, Devour), very clear destinction between the shards (though now there might be some exciting mixing of mana), very magical, very well written story. As someone who loves to explore a world, the story of the inhabitants and dive deep in the fantasy, Alara is one of THE most enjoyable planes.

A return to Alara is a possibility.

Feedback on Kaladesh Masterpieces

New 08 Feb 2022 Asked by honor-basquiat 48 Comments

Kaladesh Masterpieces were cool because you could buy a Draft pack and you had a 1:150 chance of pulling a masterpiece. It was super unlikely which made it was and the cards were VERY unique. The Neon Ink experiment is cool in theory. I do like the idea that there is a version of Hidetsugu, Devouring Chaos that is extremely rare (the red one) but when you have a card in a single set with SEVEN different versions, even if one of them is highly elusive, it makes it feel way less special.

When we were doing Masterpieces, the number one complaint, and by a huge margin, was they weren’t accessible enough.

Birthdays and Foretell Mechanic

New 12 Jan 2022 Asked by smrgnt-blog 37 Comments

Hi Mark! I have paid the two and foretold that tomorrow is my birthday. Might I request some birthday trivia about Ethereal Valkyrie or Dream Devourer (or failing that, other interesting Foretell stories)?

The precursor to Foretell was a mechanic called Layaway based on a mechanic from the Star Wars Trading Card Game. Happy Birthday!

'Devour Everything 1' Query

New 26 Nov 2021 Asked by badatcommander 42 Comments

Could you print a black-bordered card with “Devour Everything 1”, or does Emrakul’s “protection from everything” imply that “everything” includes non-permanents?

My guess is you can only devour permanents and everything has been defined as more than just permanents.

Devour Mechanic with Food

Could we see a new version of devour which only works with Food?

A little narrow.

Devour and Food Synergy

New 25 Nov 2021 Asked by haru-n-harkel 44 Comments

you said that Devour and Food aren't synergistic, but in MH2A we got Caprichrome, which has "Devour artifact 1". Does its existence increase the chances?

It’s not inherently synergistic. Can you make it more synergistic? Sure.

Combining Devour and Food

Could we see devour and food in the same set?

They’re sadly not synergistic.

Potential of Wingless Dragons

New 21 Jan 2021 Asked by strodeviking 54 Comments

If/When on a Legendary Dragon without Flying? Just seems like it would be a nice and unqiue Legendary Dragon, could be like the Dragon Wurms where they are grounded. I am just curious to see more interesting and niche design for a Dragon to not have Flying occasionally.

We’ve already made one. Wingless Dragons (aka Dragons that don’t fly) are Wurms in Magic. Battlebond had Grothama, All-Devouring, a legendary Wurm.

Perception of Dream Devourer

New 18 Jan 2021 Asked by jml1218 39 Comments

Hello Mark, loving the set Kaldheim so far!! With regard to Dream Devourer granting Fortell to cards, is that something you are cool with or still wish for the lack of interaction with the exile zone? Thanks!

I don’t mind cards getting themselves or cards they exiled out of exile. My issue is getting back cards that were exiled by another source.

Likes and Dislikes

New 13 Dec 2019 Asked by fuckyeahtumblo 57 Comments

Hey Mark, can you tell us a thing you like in a set that was poorly received and a thing that you don't like in a set that was well received

I liked devoid and it was not well received. I thought it was a nice answer to a really thorny problem. I tried to stop the original Akroma from being printed with that design as I felt it didn’t do a good job of capturing her character. The card was beloved.EDIT: Auto-correct! I meant devoid not devour.

Devoid Mechanic Explained

New 02 Dec 2019 Asked by symphonic-sync 58 Comments

Why can Devoid cards be given a color without first removing Devoid? The rulings on cards such as Barrage Tyrant have me confused. It feels like destroying indestructible cards without first removing the keyword or blocking a flyer without first clipping their wings.

Devour is the absence of color, not the removal of color. If I have no shirt, and then put on a red shirt, I have a red shirt on.

Green's Sacrifice Mechanics

New 10 Nov 2019 Asked by animatedscreenshots 43 Comments

If green is the "food-chain" predation colour, why does it get so few "sacrifice another creature" effects like Devour?

Because “sacrifice” doesn’t feel like “eat” but “feed”. Fight is more used to capture green predation. Also, flavor is broader than mechanics. Many choices are about making the gameplay feel unique per color. You could justify almost any mechanic in any color with the right flavor, so we have to be careful using it as justification.

Magic's Silliness Value

New 18 Aug 2019 Asked by gus-goose 71 Comments

Hello! I would like to politely voice that I think magic could afford to have a little more silliness, e.i. Squirrels. My favorite flavor texts are the ones that are humorous, and I’ve loved the recent uptick in silly flavors like fry or book devourer. I think it fits into the argument that you make different cards for different people. The same way the vorthoses or spikes get cards, there can be dark cards and more silly cards, and I don’t think that takes away from the game for the others.

Preaching to the choir. : )

Designs in War of Spark

New 23 May 2019 Asked by wilsonosgoodmcman 38 Comments

Did any Modern Horizons designs get absorbed by War of the Spark? Makeshift Battalion, Tenth District Legionnaire, and Devouring Hellion seem like they were very obviously designed to have Battalion, Heroic, and Devour, respectively.

They were, but that was all the doing of the War of the Spark’s set design team.

Templating Issue Query

New 14 Apr 2019 Asked by jhoald 48 Comments

Who can I ask about templating issues? My playgroup is very confused by the card "Book Devourer" from Guilds of Ravnica. It says "When this deals damage to an opponent, you may discard your hand. If you do, draw that many cards". We cannot figure out if "that many cards" is equal to the damage dealt or the number of cards discarded.

The cards discarded. It’s a Winds of Change effect.
