Monocolor Deck Rewards

New 27 May 2024 Asked by zbaschtian 10 Comments

Why do we see so few cards that reward playing specific basic land types in Standard, such as Blanchwood Armor, Armored Ascension or Flow of Ideas? These seem like a slam dunk for encouraging monocolored decks in Constructed, something that we see less and less of as dual lands are released. Take the Darksteel Affinity for Land Type golems for instance: they solve the high mana value playability issue very well while asking for a meaningful commitment.

Those effects work best in uncommon, especially if that’s all they’re focused on. At uncommon, those cards are draft traps though if the set doesn’t support monocolor play. So, they’re not something we can just drop in most sets.

Darksteel Relic Trivia

New 23 May 2024 Asked by pascal314 15 Comments

Hi Mark! Today is my birthday. If it's not too specific, I was wondering if you had some trivia regarding my favorite Magic card, Darksteel Relic. Thanks!

The design of Darksteel Relic was actually a bit controversial. Shortly after I made indestructible, I designed this card. A lot of R&D was “Why print this? It doesn’t do anything.” I said that players would figure out things to do with it, and finally managed to keep it in the set.Happy Birthday!

Picking Breaking News Cards

New 03 Apr 2024 Asked by theoncesilentseph 25 Comments

I thought "Turn the Tables" from Darksteel would have been a fun and very thematic card for the Breaking News cards. What was the process behind picks breaking news cards?

There were many factors: did it fit the sheet criteria, do players want it reprinted, did it play well with the set, etc.

Color Pie Fit

New 26 Mar 2024 Asked by kallixti 43 Comments

Darksteel Relic is an artifact which does nothing. If you were to make an enchantment/instant/sorcery which similarly does nothing, where in the color pie would it be?

Green or white.

Fortifications Interest

New 24 Sep 2023 Asked by kingnanners 30 Comments

Hi Maro! I'm a big fan of Darksteel Garrison! Could I get an if/when on fortifications? As a big artifact player, I'd love to see this space explored more

Fortifications are an if. We just don’t do many enchant lands, let alone ones you would want to be able to move.

Mirrodin Block Fun Fact

New 10 Jul 2023 Asked by cerus 31 Comments

first time invoking birthday trivia!! mirrodin/darksteel/fifth dawn is my favourite block :] got any fun facts?

We brought Aaron Forsythe onto the Fifth Dawn design team to write an article about the process. (At the time he was editing the website.) He did so well, we brought him into R&D. Happy Birthday!

Colorless Identity Inquiry

New 04 Apr 2023 Asked by clefty 54 Comments

Hello Mark, I am a long time colorless player and my favorite set is Darksteel. With the recent "block" featuring a return to Mirrodin, I was wondering if colorless was considered to have a "color identity" as the past few sets had notably few relevant colorless cards in the eternal format context. I would love to get excited for new sets, but the lack of representation for my favorite "color" makes it challenging. Thanks!

Colorless doesn’t have a color identity. It’s more about rate as to not step on the toes on the weakest color at an ability.

Color Identity Philosophy

New 19 Nov 2022 Asked by baurpower 51 Comments

So, for example, an 11/11 creature with trample is clearly out-of-color-pie for white. But a mono white deck can cast darksteel/blighsteel colossus, eldrazi, etc. Would it be permissible then to print an 11/11 white creature with trample so long as it cost the colorless rate (cmc ≈ 11)? If not, why? What is the functional (or philosophical) difference between a white card and a card that can be cast for mono white? Thanks.

We purposefully allow artifacts to do things that aren’t appropriate in color. We make the rate such that it doesn’t cause issues with the color. An important part of communicating that a color doesn’t do something is have it not do it. Most players can’t tell how powerful a card is, so seeing it just sends the message that the color can do it.

Stacking p/t Stickers

New 23 Sep 2022 Asked by jubilant-brawler 20 Comments

Could I stack all my p/t stickers on a Darksteel Relic in order to keep them safe from removal in an Ambassador Blorpityblorpboop deck?

You could put one. The second one would replace the first.

Near-Zero Text Artifact Card

New 13 Feb 2022 Asked by banksyguythrowingthings 34 Comments

"a zero mana artifact card with no text" - Darksteel Relic is pretty close to this.

True.

Suggestions on Card Description

New 04 Jan 2022 Asked by moonsliceman 65 Comments

Have you ever considered replacing stuff like "base power and toughness 2/4" with a mini version of the P/T graphic? EX: Darksteel Mutation would be "Enchanted creature is a (0/1) Insect artifact creature and has indestructible, and it loses blah blah."

It’s an interesting idea. I don’t know the issues of doing it from a technical standpoint. Mixing text and symbols can cause complications.

Shift of Humility Effects

New 06 Dec 2021 Asked by papillon94 45 Comments

With Blue's transformation being planted firmly Auras and temporary effects overwriting creatures stats and abilities, are Humility effects no longer in White's slice of the color pie? Not that it was used with any great regularity, but I do have a fondness for the likes of Darksteel Mutation and Minimus Containment.

Humility is now mostly blue.

Confusion Regarding Articles

Upsss Maro, I confused the articles. ARCBOUND TO HAPPEN is were you talk about your Dervish deck, to introduce Arcbound Slith.

Darksteel Expansion Trivia

New 23 May 2021 Asked by keicowku 54 Comments

Happy Sunday Mark!
Its my 31st birthday, and according to the wiki the 31st expansion was Darksteel. Any neat trivia about its design?

Darksteel introduced indestructible, although not as a keyword, just as an English word. I was trying to think what artifact players wanted most and came up with “artifacts my opponents can’t destroy”. Happy Birthday!

Color Allocation Discussion

New 23 Dec 2020 Asked by 22bebo 38 Comments

I think what the last question meant was a set without white at all, then a set without blue at all, etc for all the colors. So each set would be color balanced among the four present colors.

I understood what was being asked. Darksteel and Judgment were color balanced when put together. That didn’t prevent them individually causing problems.

Potential of Enchantment Land

New 08 Dec 2020 Asked by trifas 37 Comments

Mark, considering Darksteel Citadel was safe enough to reprint in a Core Set, would you say a single Enchantment Land could be printed in a premiere set?

It depends on the larger environment.

Artifacts in Ingenuity Engine

New 07 Nov 2020 Asked by brokencutlass18 39 Comments

Can you tell us what all artifacts are hidden in the picture of Ingenuity Engine? I found sensei's top, behemoth sledge, sword of light and shadow, sword of body and mind, commander's sphere, darksteel ingot, rings of brightheart, and the classic sol ring

I cannot. Any help?

Trivia on Darksteel Relic

New 09 Aug 2020 Asked by darksteel-relic 45 Comments

Today is my birthday, might I get some trivia on my namesake card: Darksteel Relic

There was a lot of fighting over whether we should print Darksteel Relic. A bunch of R&D thought it was a bad joke.Happy Birthday!

Trivia about Darksteel Garrison

New 14 Mar 2020 Asked by pyrpleknyght 38 Comments

Ah I forgot to ask for Birthday trivia yesterday! I would love to learn something new about Darksteel Garrison.

When making future-shifted cards for Future Sight, we tended to take existing mechanics and tweak them. Darksteel Garrison was us riffing off of equipment doing something similar that equipment couldn’t technically do. We’ve talked about putting fortifications in sets, but land aura effects are just so narrow, it’s hard to find enough designs to justify it.Happy Birthday!

Alternative Win Conditions

New 09 Mar 2020 Asked by cursedereaper 27 Comments

Hey Mark. Can there be twisted win cons were a card allows everyone to win the game with the alternated win con. like a Darksteel Reactor that looks who has the most life. Or a Laboratory Maniac that effects each player?

The problem is you have the deck built to do it and no one else does.
